Recommendations for Avoiding headache and migraine by Manipulating Caffeine Intakein Order to Avoid Caffeine Withdrawal.

FAQ Stress is Bunk Hypothesis ... Letters How to Prevent Primary Headaches/Migraines by Manipulating Caffeine Intake Caffeine is widely used to relieve (abort) headaches and migraines. Caffeine intake can also be manipulated to prevent primary headaches and migraines from happening in the first place (caffeine can be used as a headache or migraine prophylactic). The idea is to prevent caffeine withdrawal and thereby prevent primary headache/migraine. There are two ways to prevent yourself from going into caffeine withdrawal: (1) never ingest any caffeine whatsoever, or (2) always ingest enough caffeine at regular intervals spaced closely enough so that you never go without caffeine long enough to go into withdrawal. The first tactic is called caffeine abstinence, the second caffeine maintenance. There are advantages and disadvantages to each tactic. Either method is safe and inexpensive, so they are worth a try. Caffeine abstinence
Theoretically caffeine abstinence should eliminate primary headache/migraine. Unfortunately caffeine abstinence is not always effective. In this respect caffeine abstinence as a migraine therapy is like sexual abstinence as a birth control method: sexual abstinence is theoretically 100 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, but in practice sexual abstinence is only 70 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. The problem, of course, is patient non-compliance. Likewise with caffeine abstinence as a migraine therapy: it's all too easy to ingest caffeine without realizing it, and later go into withdrawal and get a headache or migraine. In order to successfully avoid caffeine you have to be aware of all the sources of caffeine. Make sure to read the

HEADACHES INTRODUCTION. The most common pain complaint of civilized man, headache pain may be mild and of short duration, or it can be severe enough to incapacitate the sufferer totally. Fortunately, the majority of headaches do not have a serious cause. In fact, chronic headaches are rarely caused by organic diseases such as brain tumors. Headache is one of the most common complaints of those who suffer with various types of TMJ problems. The first well-known classification of headache pain was proposed in 1962 by the Ad Hoc Committee on Classification of Headache of the National Institute of Neurolgical Diseases and Blindness. This committee divided headache pain into three (3) basic categories: (1) vascular headaces; (2) traction-inflammatory headaches; and, (3) muscle contraction headaches. Because there are certainly more than three main types of headaches, in 1987 the International Headache Society developed more specific criteria to provide greater uniformity and reproducibility in the diagnosis of headache. This new classification system divided headache pain into 13 different categories, with TMJ and facial pain falling into category number 11: Headache or facial pain associted with disorder of cranium, neck, eyes, nose, sinuses, teeth, mouth, or other facial or cranial structures.

Migraine
Definition: Migraine headaches are a type of headache that some people get repeatedly over time. Migraines are different from other headaches because they occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. Some people who get migraines have warning symptoms, called an aura, before the actual headache begins. Most people, however, do not have such warning symptoms. See also:
Alternative Names: Headache - migraine
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: A lot of people get migraines about 6 out of 100. The headaches tend to start between the ages of 10 and 46, may run in families, and occur in women more often than men. Migraines are classified as either "common" or "classic". Common migraines do not have any warning symptoms, while classic migraines do have a warning (the aura). Most migraine patients have the common type.

F requent attacks of headache, migraine or non-migraine variety, have proved to be a pain in neck not only for the patients who have it, but also for the physicians who treat them. In this small write-up, we shall limit discussion to the migraine headache.
What is migraine headache?
Well, migraine headache has been described as an episodic, paroxysmal headache, usually but not necessarily affecting one side of the head; which may or may not be associated with giddiness, nausea, vomiting or visual impairment. The painful episode of migraine is usually intense and lasting for half an hour to over a couple days.
The Cause: How does it occur ?
The exact cause often remains unknown. It has been proved that migraine is a vascular disorder. Due to some triggering factors, varying from person to person, there is some kind of vasoconstriction and vasodilatation of the branches of the carotid artery ( the major neck blood vessel) which leads to typical throbbing and congestive attack of headache.
While the exact causation in unknown, it has been observed in practice that migraine is often pshychosomatic in origin. There are migraine personality and we have observed in a study of a series of migraine patients at our center, that, there is also a common thread in the migraine personality type.
