The primary outcome of the Head Start educational program is social competence for children. It is the program’s belief that social competence is achieved through a strong and sound developmental approach for three to five year old children. The program includes opportunities for children to work and play individually, in small groups, and in large groups. Although the program is child-centered, child-initiated activities are balanced with teacher-directed activities. Head Start’s educational program is comprehensive and is based on developmentally appropriate practices that are both age-appropriate and individually appropriate. The program is designed to focus on the uniqueness of each child in order to meet his/her individual needs, as well as the educational priorities of the community. It is the expectation that upon leaving the Head Start program, each child will have participated in a challenging, child-centered environment, enriched with opportunities to learn to function effectively for success in school and in everyday life. It is the mission of the education service area of Head Start to promote educational excellence and success for all children, families and staff.

Adapting a Computer Curriculum to Head Start If you had visited any of the Parent and Child Together (PACT) Head Start classrooms in Springfield, Illinois last October, you would have observed a member of the ACTT (Activating Children Through Technology) staff administering an individual computer pretest. You may have overheard a little boywho was not at all sure he wanted to participateexclaim, "I did it! I did that!" Experimenting with various keys, he suddenly animated Stickybear,[R] who ran up and down the stairs on the monitor, much to the child's surprise. He continued pressing the keys that had triggered this result, saying, "I did it again!" His voice filled with delight and amazement.

Education
About our curriculum... Jefferson County Head Start uses the "Tools of the Mind" Vygotskian-based curriculum. The core of the curriculum is based on the ideas about how to amplify development in young children. There are two primary goals:
  • To develop underlying cognitive skills, which we define as the development of self-regulation, focused attention, and deliberate memory. These skills are critical for learning and for developing positive self-esteem, and social interactions with others.
To build the foundation for later academic learning through specific skill development. The specific skills we focus on have to do with symbolic thinking and the development of early literacy and numeracy. Our program will build these skills through the activity of play and is at the same time developmentally appropriate.
The curriculum is comprehensive, providing the learning experiences in all areas of a child's development including cognitive, language, social, emotional, problem-solving and motor areas. It is also highly individualized, as our educators continually identify the children's needs and abilities, then develop appropriate goals and activities for each child.

Empowering Parents to Educate Children
  • Program recruits parent educators from migrant community
  • Training includes theory, practice, and follow-up coaching
  • Professional development focuses on site-specific curriculum
Overview
The Migrant Head Start program in Dysart Unified School District serves 75 children through federal migrant education funds and Head Start grants. Parents of children in the program may participate in training to improve their ability to promote children's development. Some parents learn to work as paraprofessionals while others learn to run the parent center. Currently, a migrant parent acts as a health care liaison, referring parents to appropriate services and testing children for health problems.
Major Program Features
The Dysart program features three strands of training for migrant parents. After initial training (Level I), parents work as interns in either the prekindergarten program or the parent center. More advanced training (Level II) prepares them to serve as paraprofessionals in kindergarten. Completing the third training component equips them to become paraprofessional parent trainers.

LEAP Witnesses Testify on Improving Results, Ensuring Accountability in Early Childhood Education News from the
Committee on Education and the Workforce

John Boehner, Chairman
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 6, 2003 Washington, D.C. - The House Subcommittee on Education Reform, chaired by Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE), today heard testimony on the impact of the Head Start program in preparing disadvantaged children for school. Promoting school readiness and improving results for children served by Head Start will be top priorities as Congress prepares to reauthorize the Head Start program this year. “Recognizing the important relationship between the quality of a child’s early experiences and their readiness for school, states and schools are focusing greater attention on the cognitive and social development of young children before they enter kindergarten,” said Castle. “Head Start and other early childhood education programs are often the first line of defense in ensuring that children attain the fundamental skills necessary for optimal reading development and overall school readiness.”

LEAP Plan worries Head Start supporters Program's reading, writing, 'rithmetic may face review
By ROBERT DODGE and JOSHUA BENTON
The Dallas Morning News
When Oscar Fuentes enrolled at the Jerry Junkins Head Start Center in West Dallas, he never spoke. "All he would do is point at things," said his mom, Rosa. It turned out he had a speech impediment. But with hard work and therapy, he has overcome his difficulty. Ms. Fuentes credits the Junkins center with the improvement and goes 30 minutes out of her way every day to drive him there. "He's so ready for kindergarten now," Ms. Fuentes said about her 5-year-old son. "He can write his name. He reads a lot. The program has helped him enormously. I wouldn't want to change anything about it."

Preparing for Successful Fathering Book
Dr. Kyle Pruett, Yale University School of Medicine says, “Klinger’s work is a true labor of love. Practical without being simple minded, and as useful as it is inspired…”
Answers the BIG questions
  • How do you get men to come into your programs and keep them coming?
  • What are the obstacles that prevent men from being involved?
  • Why should you get men involved?
The Center for Successful Fathering presents a year long series of high energy, father-friendly, interactive instructional sessions aimed at dads of children from birth through six years. The course content and the learning process incorporates lessons learned from over a decade of hands-on experiences with tens of thousands of
fathers. The content appeals to a new father's need to make a difference in the life of his child, and offers proven effective ways to get started. The process minimizes the use of lecture and emphasizes the use of movement, interaction and physical play. This curriculum is designed for both male and female parent educators to use. Because so many parent educators involved in early childhood programs are female, the curriculum frames the role of the educator as a learning facilitator. The workbook for dads has exercises and case studies that make this a full year curriculum.
