Rutherford B. Hayes, Inauguration, March 5, 1877
[Crowd at the inauguration of Rutherford B. Hayes on the east front grounds of the U.S. Capitol, surrounding Horatio Greenough's statue of George Washington, March 5, 1877]. Library of Congress. Manuscript Division. The Papers of Montgomery C. Meigs. The diary of President Garfield is a medium-sized bound volume with covers of marbled red and blue paper and red leather corners and spine. A green label on the diary cover reads "Daily Journal for 1877." A U.S. representative from Ohio at this time, Garfield is more fulsome in his description of President Hayes's inauguration than he was for President Grant's second inauguration. He relates: Attended the Senate and the Vice President was sworn in. Hence went to the East Portico and witnessed the Inauguration of Hayes. The President spoke clearly and forcibly, the Chief Justice administered the oath opening a new bible which Hayes kissed somewhere in the first eleven verses of the 118th psalm. Drove back with the Presidential party to the White House where a lunch had been prepared by Mrs. Grant. After the luncheon at the White House prepared by Mrs. Grant for the newly inaugurated President Hayes, General and Mrs. Grant left the White House in their carriage and the White House staff and President and Mrs. Hayes bade them farewell, prompting this comment from Mr. Garfield: "No American has carried greater fame out of the White House than this silent man who leaves it today."

President Rutherford B. Hayes
American History Study Guide Rutherford B. Hayes Still, Hayes provided stability and moderate leadership to an American system rocked by serious problems. Government scandals, political partisanship (placing the concerns of one's group or political party above all other considerations), an unstable economy, and sectionalism (when people place emphasis on policies that would directly benefit their area of the country) had plagued the country since the end of the Civil War (1861-65), a decade before. Hayes maintained conservative fiscal (financial) policies while many called for more radical (extreme) approaches. His methods helped revive what had been a sluggish (slow) economy. Finally, Hayes lobbied for the civil rights of minorities..... Overcomes childhood illness Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, on October 4, 1822. His family had settled there after moving from Dummerston, Vermont, in 1817. His fat.....

Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

Rutherford B. Hayes
Inaugural Address
Monday, March 5, 1877 The outcome of the election of 1876 was not known until the week before the inauguration itself. Democrat Samuel Tilden had won the greater number of popular votes and lacked only one electoral vote to claim a majority in the electoral college. Twenty disputed electoral votes, however, kept hopes alive for Republican Governor Hayes of Ohio. A fifteen-member Electoral Commission was appointed by the Congress to deliberate the outcome of the election. By a majority vote of 8 to 7 the Commission gave all of the disputed votes to the Republican candidate, and Mr. Hayes was elected President on March 2. Since March 4 was a Sunday, he took the oath of office in the Red Room at the White House on March 3, and again on Monday on the East Portico of the Capitol. Chief Justice Morrison Waite administered both oaths. Fellow-Citizens: W E have assembled to repeat the public ceremonial, begun by Washington, observed by all my predecessors, and now a time-honored custom, which marks the commencement of a new term of the Presidential office. Called to the duties of this great trust, I proceed, in compliance with usage, to announce some of the leading principles, on the subjects that now chiefly engage the public attention, by which it is my desire to be guided in the discharge of those duties. I shall not undertake to lay down irrevocably principles or measures of administration, but rather to speak of the motives which should animate us, and to suggest certain important ends to be attained in accordance with our institutions and essential to the welfare of our country.

Photo Galleries Hayes Home-exterior shots The residence of President Rutherford B. Hayes

The Rutherford B. Hayes Home is a 31-one room mansion and centerpiece of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio. Rutherford B. Hayes' uncle and guardian, Sardis Birchard, constructed the original portion of the home between 1859 and 1863 as a summer home he could share with his nephew and young family. Construction took five years because materials and labor were difficult to obtain during the American Civil War. The two story brick home had eight bedrooms and a wrap-around verandah. Rutherford B. Hayes particularly loved the verandah. In 1873 he wrote in his diary, "The best part of the present house is the veranda. But I would enlarge it. I want a veranda with a house attached!" Hayes spent the next 20 years planning additions and improvements to his home and estate, much as Thomas Jefferson had with his beloved Monticello.
Hayes moved his family into the home in 1873 for two years before leaving to serve as Governor of Ohio and then President of the United States. In 1880 President Hayes prepared for his return to Fremont from the White House by building a substantial addition and remodeling the interior. The addition included a library to house his 12,000 books, a large reception room, three bedrooms, and indoor plumbing. The most spectacular improvement was a four-story walnut and butternut staircase leading to a rooftop lantern offering a 360-degree view of Spiegel Grove (the Hayes estate).
