RUTHERFORD B. HAYES U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes was an Ohio lawyer who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives while still on active duty in the Civil War. He served three terms as Governor of Ohio, then received the Republican nomination in the presidential race of 1876. Although his opponent, Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, received a plurality of the popular vote, the electoral votes from four states were in dispute. A special congressional commission gave the election to Hayes just three days before his inauguration. In turn, President Hayes removed Federal troops from the South. Rutherford B. Hayes
US President - 1877-81 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Beneficiary of the most fiercely disputed election in American history, Rutherford B. Hayes brought to the Executive Mansion dignity, honesty, and moderate reform. To the delight of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Lucy Webb Hayes carried out her husband's orders to banish wines and liquors from the White House. Born in Ohio in 1822, Hayes was educated at Kenyon College and Harvard Law School. After five years of law practice in Lower Sandusky, he moved to Cincinnati, where he flourished as a young Whig lawyer. He fought in the Civil War, was wounded in action, and rose to the rank of brevet major general. While he was still in the Army, Cincinnati Republicans ran him for the House of Representatives. He accepted the nomination, but would not campaign, explaining, "an officer fit for duty who at this crisis would abandon his post to electioneer... ought to be scalped."

  • Through a compromise with the British over a northern border, Polk managed to gain the territory which now make up Washington and Oregon. This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

Rutherford B. Hayes
A Salute to our 19th President
There is a certain aura of romance surrounding the Presidency. Take a journey with us as we look into the legacy of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes was one of the more interesting presidents, yet is often in the limelight of his predecessor, Ulysses S. Grant.
With the Civil War in the annals of American history, the country slowly entered into a new era docked by new problems such as women’s suffrage, prohibition, and strikes from the mainstream of the country – the railroad and the miners. It seems that Hayes was handed a lemon when he was elected president. What did he do? He made lemonade, of course! Or would that be his wife, Lucy? Until the year 2000, the presidential election of 1876 was the most bitterly contested in United States history. Democrats accused Republicans of fraud and vice versa. It was only two days before President Grant’s term expired when the electoral commission decided in favor of Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes. President Hayes was a civil war hero, his bravery unquestioned – his courage admired by many. He enjoyed fishing, playing chess, and reading novels – although he referred to novels as ‘trash’. There is much trivia surrounding President Hayes’ term in office and the following is a short list of the more interesting notations occurring during this timeframe.
