Today on Wordmaster, Rosanne Skirble travels a long distance in the United States for a lesson in an endangered language. RS: Hawaii is far from home: A 12-hour plane ride from Washington, D.C., to Honolulu across six time zones. I was greeted at the airport with the Hawaiian word aloha and given a special flower garland called a lei. It took a lot longer for the islands' original settlers to get here. Those Polynesian mariners sailed their double-hulled canoes from the South Pacific to these ancient volcanic islands hundreds of years before the Europeans arrived. Hawaiian was strictly an oral language when Captain James Cook landed here in 1778. Subsequent waves of missionaries brought the printing press and wrote down the language. Native monarchs ruled Hawaii until it was annexed by the United States in 1898. Afterward, English named the official language for school and government. Today scarcely 1 percent of Hawaiians, or approximately 1,000 people, speak Hawaiian as their first language. But a cultural renaissance which began in the 1970s has promoted change. Public schools, community colleges and the university now teach Hawaiian. Leilani Basham is the coordinator of the Hawaiian language program at the University of Hawaii, where nearly 1,400 students are taking Hawaiian language courses.

    Abstract
A Brief Introduction to Hawaiian Language Immersion The past decade has seen tremendous change to the world of Hawaiian language speakers. `Olelo Hawai`i, as it is known, was perilously close to becoming extinct. Studies in the early 1980`s determined that there were less than fifty speakers of `Olelo Hawai`i under the age of twenty, and that the vast majority of native speakers were elderly people, who did not pass on their native tongue to their children as it was deemed dangerous to their development as Americans. In 1984 an immersion preschool program called Punana Leo brought our native tongue back to the young. Preschoolers between the ages of three and five were raised in the language, hearing nothing but `Olelo Hawai`i through their entire school day. As this first Hawaiian language immersion class moved on to elementary school, an immersion elementary school program was begun, entitled "Kula Kaiapuni." Here also children receive their education completely through the medium of Hawaiian language. Currently there are close to 1,000 children enrolled in Kula Kaiapuni programs at eight sites on five of the major Hawaiian Islands, attending grades kindergarten through eight grade. Approximately 240 preschool children currently attend the Punana Leo Preschools. Technology and `Olelo Hawai`i

I enclose a recent message in full that appeared on the Endangered-Languages-L electronic list. Readers may wish to act on it: Date: Wed, 26 Apr 1995 14:00:28 -1000 To:Endangered-Languages-L@postbox.anu.edu.au Subject: support for Hawaiian Sender: owner-endangered-languages-l@coombs. anu.edu.au I am writing to ask people on this list for support in a time that is yet another turning point for the survival of the Hawaiian language. Here is a thumbnail sketch of the situation: The problem currently is that the governor is doing some serious budget cutting and higher education is one of the targets. Within higher Ed., the Hawaiian language program stands to lose about two-thirds of its current operating budget. If this happens, it will have a tremendous ripple effect on the revitalization of Hawaiian in general. Hawaiian language classes at the university would be cut back drastically, and as a result there could be no further hiring for the immersion program, despite waiting lists, "official" language status, Native American Languages Act, etc. I think that support from a national and international community concerned with endangered languages might make an impression on decision-makers. I don't think they realize the extent to which this is a global issue, nor are they aware that other people are looking to Hawai'i as one of the examples of strong revitalization efforts.
