Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

This report summarizes information about public elementary and secondary schools and local education agencies in the United States during the 1999-2000 school year. The information is provided by state education agencies through the Common Core of Data (CCD) survey system.
Types of Public Schools and Agencies States reported over 92,000 public elementary/secondary schools in the 1999-2000 school year . This was an increase of almost 7 percent over the more than 86,000 schools reported 5 years earlier, in the fall of 1994 . Most of these were regular schools, those that offer a comprehensive curriculum and may provide other programs and services as well. A smaller number of schools focused primarily on special education, vocational/technical education, or alternative programs. Students in these specialized schools were often enrolled in a regular school as well, and reported with the membership of that regular school ( table A ). (See Key Terms for more information about school types.)

President Bush's 2006 budget would eliminate federal funding for the following education programs in Hawaii, listed here with their 2005 budget allocation. Several other programs will have their funding reduced. Source: U.S. Department of Education The U.S. Department of Education estimates available federal funding for Hawaii elementary and secondary schools would decline 1.7 percent, to $178 million, under the 2006 federal budget. That comes when school administrators are already complaining about a lack of funding to implement No Child Left Behind's academic progress mandates.

The state Department of Education licenses 51 private trade, vocational and technical schools to do business in Hawaii, a function of the department since 1939. But, according to a state audit, the department has consistently failed to ensure the schools such as those that teach tax preparation, auto mechanics and medical assistants comply with an assortment of state rules and regulations designed to make sure students receive an adequate education for their tuition money.

IF YOU WANT TO STUDY IN THE UNITED STATES: TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL STUDIES
In the United States, a wide variety of institutions prepare people for technical and vocational occupations. Some schools train for a single job or industry; others offer programs for many different occupations. Programs can last from a few weeks to several years. Courses tend to stress application rather than theory. Vocational studies are intended to lead to immediate employment. Hands-on training is often a component of the study program and the schools are often called "trade" schools. Vocational studies vary in length from a week to two years and lead to certificates of completion rather than degrees. Common fields of study include construction, automotive mechanics, drafting and secretarial services. Technical education requires that the student learn concepts, theory and design in addition to practical training. Programs are offered at technical, community and junior colleges and some four-year colleges and universities. Two-year programs generally result in either associate of applied science degrees or pre-baccalaureate technical degrees. Common studies include: computer science, engineering technology, communication technology, allied health, nursing, accounting, business management, fire science, agribusiness, renewable natural resources and horticulture. To obtain a degree, students are required to successfully complete courses not only within their specialty but also courses in general education such as English, mathematics, sciences and history.

Under its LifeBridge program, MassMutual is writing term life policies at no cost for people earning $40,000 or less. The company has promised to pay the premiums nationally for 20,000 policies, each with a $50,000 death benefit. Each LifeBridge policy has a 10-year term. If the insured parent or legal guardian dies during that time, the $50,000 benefit will be applied toward the education of the children named as beneficiaries. The money is put in a trust administered by the MassMutual Trust Company, which will pay the educational expenses directly to the institution the children attend. Various types of schools qualify, including preschools, private schools, vocational schools, community colleges, universities and graduate schools. Some of the educational expenses covered include books and tuition.

2-Year Schools: A Good Way To Start Out A B.A.
Two-year schools may be changing, but one thing still rings true two-year colleges can lead you to a four-year degree. According to the Kansas City Star , students who start at a community college then transfer to a four-year school have the same graduation rates as students who start and stay at four-year schools. It's not always a seamless step, says Richard Thomson, director of admissions at the NEI College of Technology in Columbia Heights, Minn. But schools have made the process a lot easier. "It's up to the receiving institution what number of credits they take," says Thomson. But most two-year schools articulate, or have partnership programs, with one or more four-year schools. Even vocational schools can lead to a degree, says Don Plotts, superintendent of the Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby, Ohio. "It used to be a shortcoming of vocational education that it didn't lead to a degree," says Plotts. "But now the vocational schools have articulation with the technical schools and community colleges and they in turn have articulation with most four-year institutions."

In addition to these, there are three other 4-year, private colleges, Brigham Young University, Chaminade University, and Hawaii Pacific University. All three colleges attract out-of-state and international students, as does the University of Hawaii. University of Hawaii: University of Hawaii is the largest public university in the state, and is continuously ranked as one of the best among the nation's public colleges and universities. It attracts a lot of international students due to its excellent reputation as the most comprehensive American University and its proximity to the Asia Pacific region.
