DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, STATE OF HAWAII
OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES

I. Objectives
The primary objective of the school library instructional technology center is to implement, enrich and support the educational program of the school. In the area of materials selection, the library instructional technology center should provide a wide range of materials on all levels of difficulty, with consideration for diversity of appeal and different points of view. These materials should include those found in the virtual library, i.e. via Internet and other online resources. Therefore, the library instructional technology center should:
  • Provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum, taking into consideration the varied interests, abilities, learning needs, learning styles and maturity levels of the students served.
  • Provide materials for teachers and students that will encourage growth in knowledge, and that will help to develop literary, cultural and aesthetic appreciation and ethical standards.
  • Provide materials which reflect the ideas and beliefs of religious, social, political, historical, and ethnic groups and their contribution to the local, national and world heritages and cultures, thereby enabling students to develop intellectual integrity in forming judgments.

January 3, 2004 GOOD PARENT-DOCTOR RELATIONSHIPS MAY IMPROVE THE ADVICE PARENTS RECEIVE ABOUT KEEPING THEIR CHILDREN SAFE FROM INJURY
Parents more likely to follow advice if they trust their children’s doctors Parents whose children are at risk for child abuse and neglect may be reluctant to follow injury and illness prevention advice from pediatricians with whom they don’t have a good working relationship, say researchers at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, the Johns Burns University of Hawaii School of Medicine, and the Hawaii State Health Department. "While it may seem basic, this practical advice could prove life-saving to children whose home and family situations already make them vulnerable to unintentional injury, the leading cause of death of children over one year of age in this country," says the study’s lead author, Catherine Nelson, M.D., M.P.H, a general pediatrics fellow at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. In the study, published in the January issue of

Dianne Oberg Of Special Interest: Time Use of School Library Media Specialists: A Review of the Research Nancy Everhart Abstract: Various research studies have attempted to categorize the tasks performed by school library media specialists and the time devoted to them. Since 1969, approximately a dozen studies have been conducted in the United States and one in Britain. The number of subjects in these studies ranged from less than ten per study to several hundred. Diverse methodologies have been employed to collect the data, including diaries, surveys, logs, work sampling, estimating, and observation. In some cases, researchers wanted to ascertain simple distributions of how school library media specialists spent their time, but others have focused on how outside influences such as automation, scheduling, and support staff affects time use. Still other investigations have addressed time use issues as part of research on other topics. An overview of time study research in school library media centers, implications of the findings, and suggestions for the future are presented in this paper.

    UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII
    Author: Lance Tominaga
Many people have their doubts about attending college in Hawaii. After all, what kind of education do the tiny islands have to offer? Just a degree in surfing and the Hawaiian language , right? Wrong.
Established in 1907, the University of Hawaii confers associate, bachelor, master, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees through three university campuses, seven community college campuses, an employment training center, three university centers, four education centers and other research facilities divided across six islands. The University of Hawaii system educates over 50,000 students of which about 44,000 are undergraduates. Over 600 programs are offered throughout the University of Hawaii system with 123 devoted for bachelor's degrees, 92 for master's degrees, 53 for doctoral degrees, 3 for first professional degrees, 4 for post baccalaureate degrees, 115 for associate's degrees and other certifications.
The University of Hawaii Community College system is made up of four campuses on Oahu and one each on Maui Kauai and the Big Island . Kapiolani Community College on Oahu gained national attention in 1976 when its radiology department developed a new hip x-ray technique. In 1986, the community college's respiratory care program won a national award as an outstanding vocational education program.
