Hawaii International Education Week Activity for Middle School: Global Themes in Music
Fall 2005
East-West Center's AsiaPacificEd Program for Schools will launch as part of the 2005 Hawaii International Education Week activities, a school-based program on the theme of music. The program will work with teachers in engaging students - either in class or afterschool settings -to explore music and the ways in which it: communicates and shapes a sense of place, time, and identity relative to local and global communities and serves as a reflection of, and force for, social change. Working in partnership with researchers and local artists in the field of music, we will assist schools/teachers and students as they research the multitude of ways that music - here and everywhere - reflects the sound and the spirit of a community and its people. The program will culminate in students creating a music video highlighting their research and presenting their material at an island-wide competition, to be held at the Imin Conference Center in Spring 2005. We hope to attract both local and nationally known artists to present as well as to assist in the judging of submissions on the day of the event/competition. We will also look for ways to broadcast winning student videos on a local network channel. The program/competition objectives are to provide a platform for artistic expression that:
  • promote cross-cultural understanding and dialogue through music;

This Web page provides information relating to a program conducted in Honolulu in January 2001. This Web page is being retained in this form for general reference purposes. Geodemographic resources that were the subject of that program are described in the Hawaii Decision Making Information (HIDMI) Web page and related links.
Two seminar/workshops will be conducted in Honolulu, Hawaii in January 2001, focused on Census 2000, geodemographic analysis, and integrating these and related data for K-12 education decision making information applications. The sessions are sponsored by the Hawaii Department of Education and coordinated by Glenn Hirata (808/733-4008). The sessions will be conducted by Warren Glimpse, founder of Proximity and specialist in the development and use of geodemographic decision making information.
Glimpse worked with the Hawaii Department of Education in the summer of 2000, to develop the high school district complex map boundaries that were then incorporated into the Census Bureau TIGER/Line files. These boundaries were developed to enable the Census Bureau to develop Census 2000 demographic data tabulations (as a part of the "Census 2000 school district special tabulation") for the high school district complexes. The addition of the Hawaii high school complex boundaries into the TIGER/Line files enables high school complex geographic areas to be tied to a wide range of other types of geography and geographic processing applications.
