The spectrum logo, left, and the wave logo, right.
The winning design will be

as part of a branding initiative By Craig Gima
cgima@starbulletin.com
It's the "wave" vs. the "spectrum" as the year-long effort to develop a single logo for the University of Hawaii system was narrowed to two choices. The final candidates evolved from interpretations of what's in an H. Depending on the design, it's either "the university's unique island location while figuratively signifying Hawaii's importance as a link between East and West" or "a sense of movement that reflects the energy in Hawaii's geography." One design, called "wave," is an H with a crossbar of waves that join in the center. The design represents the university's island location and the different but interdependent nature of the UH system's community colleges. The other design, called "spectrum," is an H with an abstract circular design in the center that forms another H and something of a Chinese yin-yang character. The curves also resemble waves, unfolding ferns and the scoop of a voyaging canoe sail, according to a description of the design on the UH Web site. The university unveiled the final two designs yesterday to gather public comment by May 2.

The Bulletin of Asian Geography MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR The past two years for me have been most enjoyable as Chair of the AGSG. I am encouraged by the strong interest in our Travel Award Competition, which we decided to continue on a regular basis. The successful applicants, both students and faculty, are listed elsewhere in the Newsletter. Second a good number of special sessions were developed for Honolulu by individuals in the AGSG, the Area Directors, and co-sponsored with other Specialty Groups. I do feel that the web site, which was developed last year, will be a very useful means of increasing our presence among Asianists and others interested in our mission. The web address is: http://www.uky.edu/ArtsSciences/Geography/AGSG/Welcome.htm This resource can be a very powerful tool in enhancing our future activities. Included is a mission statement, notices and forthcoming meetings, a listing of the members of the specialty group and their email addresses, the AGSG Newsletter in electronic form, and links to other organizations and specialty groups. If you have not yet visited the site please do so very soon. MOST IMPORTANT IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL OF THE MEMBERS ATTEMPT TO CONTRIBUTE INFORMATION. The Area Directors each have a virtual region in which they can post items that are of relevance to South, Southeast, East, and Southwest Asia. Please take the time after you view this to contribute announcements of conferences, research projects, publication citations and other materials. This may be done by sending the items to Nanda Shrestha, the new Chair. WE ALSO ASK THAT YOU SEND MORE MATERIAL TO BIMAL PAUL FOR THE AGSG NEWSLETTER. The Department of Geography at the University of Kentucky will continue to maintain the web site for the immediate future. The site will continue to serve the important purpose of bringing news and information more quickly and perhaps place the AGSG more conspicuously in your thoughts, plans and priorities.

Framework Demonstration Project
The State of Hawaii has applied for and received a Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) grant to carry out a framework demonstration project. The purpose of this project is to illustrate the application of the framework concept envisioned by the FGDC in their efforts in establishing a National Digital Geospatial Data Framework The project focuses on developing a cadastral framework data layer for the Island of Molokai. Participants in this effort are gathering boundary data for large land holdings including parcels of land owned by the State of Hawaii, the County of Maui, the federal government and large private land owners. For a detailed description of this project, please visit the Framework Demonstration Website which is being updated frequently by the prinicipals of the project, The University of Hawaii Geography Department. The federal grant is providing an opportunity for geospatial data users in the State of Hawaii to develop a process for collecting, recording and using a framework data layer. Once this process is established, it could then be applied to the entire State of Hawaii. Furthermore, the intent of this effort is to encourage geospatial data developers in Hawaii to use the framework layer as a standard reference layer when developing new spatial data. As such, all users of spatial data in Hawaii are invited to participate in this project. The following agencies and organizations have committed to participate in this effort:
  • Dept. of Land and Natural Resources, Forestry and Wildlife Division, Historic Preservation Division

February 6, 2004 This story is one of a series looking at National Geographic Crittercam research. Crittercam is a research instrument worn by wild animals and equipped with a video camera and other information-gathering equipment. Crittercam is used on animals both in the ocean and on land To learn more about the Crittercam's field test in Hawaii, tune in to the Crittercam: Pilot Whales episode on the National Geographic Channel in the United States on Friday, February 6 at 8:30 p.m. ET. Got a high-speed connection? Click here to watch previews of the Crittercam television documentaries on the National Geographic Channel Web site. The pilot whales are taking a time-out. Basking beneath the morning sun, they look like a raft of giant ebony logs, with just their dorsal fins and blowholes bobbing above gently lapping waters. It would be easy for the boatloads of passing whale watchers to get the wrong impression, for these intelligent, powerfully built animals are far from idle. This is a well earned rest they're taking, having spent the pre-dawn hours chasing squid in the deeply shelving Pacific Ocean, off Hawaii's Kona coast. It was a successful night; one they are quietly digesting.

April 1, 2004 In an effort to save both the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) The closure of the California fishery is effective on April 12. The Hawaii swordfish fishery is expected to reopen in May, according to Samual Pooley, director of the Honolulu-based Pacific Islands Regional Office of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). To reduce the number of turtles caught, new rules will govern the Hawaii fishery. A new type of hook and mackerel bait, rather than the traditional J-hook and squid combo, are required for all swordfishing boats. De-hooking equipment is also mandatory to limit turtle bycatch. The amount of swordfishing has been restricted to a total of 2,120 sets per year. A set is roughly equivalent to one day of fishing on one boat. Observers will be required on every swordfishing boat. Once 16 leatherbacks or 17 loggerheads have been hooked, the fishery will close for the rest of the year.
