In fact, it is larger than all the other islands combined. The population is 135,500. The County of Hawaii is comprised solely of the Island of Hawaii, with Hilo as the county seat. Hilo's population is 45,000. Volcanoes The island has some 266 miles of rugged coastline -lava fields, high seacliffs, rocky shores and limited stretches of sandy beach. It rises from sea level to the highest volcanic peaks in the islands, Mauna Kea at 13,796 feet and Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. These two towering peaks dominate the island. Mauna Loa and adjacent Kilauea Volcano are among the world's most active volcanoes. Kilauea has been in an active phase since 1983, with almost continuous lava eruptions into the sea on the southern side of the island. The Island of Hawaii is the youngest in the chain of islands. The ongoing eruptions of Kilauea, in fact, continue to add to the island's size with buildup of lava on the coastline. As measured by comparison of its structural lava flows, the age of Hawaii is about 700,000 years, very young compared to the other Hawaiian Islands.

    Abbreviation:
HI The name Hawaii is believed to be an English adaptation of the native word for "homeland" ( hawaiki or owhyhee ). First settled by Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between A.D. 300 and 600, Hawaii was visited in 1778 by British Captain James Cook, who called the group the Sandwich Islands. Following its annexation in 1898, Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900. Hawaii is the youngest state, joining the Union in 1959 as the 50th state, just after Alaska. Hawaii is world famous for its pleasant climate and spectacular beauty. It has deep-blue seas, brilliantly colored flowers, graceful palm trees, magnificent waterfalls and dramatic volcanoes. Hawaii consists of a chain of 132 islands; the eight main islands are at the southeastern end of the chain. Hawaii, the "Aloha State" has many customs originating from the original Polynesian settlers.

The archipelago begins in the east with the island of Hawaii and ends almost at the international date line with a small speck in the ocean called Kure Atoll ( Map 16 : 21K). Only the easternmost 650 kilometers of the state contains islands of any size, as well as almost all of the state's population. It is this portion that is usually considered as the actual "Hawaii." The eight main islands of HawaiiOahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau, and Kahoolawecontain more than 99 percent of the state's land area and all but a handful of its people. The island of Hawaii, at 8,150 square kilometers, comprises nearly two-thirds of the state's total area, and it is often referred to as simply the Big Island. The smallest of the eight, Kahoolawe, is 125 square kilometers and is uninhabited. LOCATION AND PHYSICAL SETTING Hawaii is near the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Honolulu, the state capital, is 3,850 kilometers west of San Francisco, California, 6,500 kilometers east of Tokyo, Japan, and roughly 7,300 kilometers northeast of the Australian coast. This might be viewed as a case of extreme isolation, and until the last few centuries this was probably true. But as countries around the Pacific Basin began to communicate more with one another and to use the ocean's resources, these islands became an important center of interaction.

    Geography and Weather
The scenery in Hawaii is affected by geography and weather. Geography Hawaii is more than 2500 miles from the U.S. Mainland. The state consists of a series of volcanic islands that stretch from the southeast to the northwest. The islands are on a tectonic plate that has been moving slowly over a hotspot break in the earth's crust in the northwesterly direction. The oldest islands are therefore in the northwest part of the archipelago whereas the newest islands are in the southeast. Kauai, the most northwestern island, is among the oldest of the eight major islands.
The only active volcano in Hawaii is on the southeast portion of the island of Hawaii (also known as the Big Island) These geology factors are important parameters that affect the general topology and landscape of the islands. For example, Kauai has not had an active volcano in recorded history so the island is generally lush whereas recent volcanic activity on the Big Island accounts for large areas with no vegetation. Goin' with the Flow in Hawaii
Springbreak in Hawaii? It's a sure thing for students in Professor Ron Janke's three-credit geography field course, "Hawaii Volcanoes." Over Valpo's two-week spring break this March, Janke led his 13 students on a required 14-day exploration of the island of Hawaii. Thanks to a National Science Foundation grant that enabled Janke and 11 other professors to study on the island last summer, the class received the latest information on Hawaiian volcanoes. They experienced the geography and conditions first hand by riding a helicopter into the volcano, hiking over fresh lava fields, and touring a wild cave that only 400 people had ever seen. And, oh yes they swam and relaxed at one of the top-rated beaches in the world. "The helicopter ride into the volcano was the most fascinating thing I've ever experienced," says Anna Neuchterlein (VU Class of '02), a geography and theology double major. "The active lava flow that streamed out of the side of the volcano mountain was amazingly beautiful. I really enjoyed taking the trip with others who appreciate geography. It was great to be with people who would linger at the lava fields rather than immediately head back to the hotel. And professor Janke was so accommodating, trying as hard as possible to please all 13 of us."

Why does Hawaii have interstate highways?
Any highway built under the auspices of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 and funded by the federal governent is called an interstate highway, even if it doesn't cross state lines. In fact, there are many local routes that lie entirely within a single state funded by the Act. Hawaii has three interstates - H1, H2, and H3 - which connect important military facilities on the island of Oahu. Visit my Interstate Highways collection of resources for more information.
