Hawaii: Geography
Hawaii, the 50th state (statehood on August 21, 1959) of the United States, consists of a group of volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean.
The land area of these islands are the emerged tops of a chain of volcanic mountains that form eight major islands and 124 islets, stretching in a 1,500-mile crescent from Kure Island in the west to the island of Hawaii in the east, encompassing an area of 6,459 square miles (16,729 square km).
The eight major islands at the eastern end of the chain are, from west to east, Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii.
Volcanic activity has become dormant, with the exception of the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the easternmost and largest island, Hawaii, where spectacular eruptions and lava flows take place from time to time. The highest Hawaiian mountains are Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, reaching 13,796 feet (4,205 m) and 13,678 feet (4,169 m) above sea level, respectively.
There is little erosion in the geologically young areas, where the terrain is domelike and the volcanic craters are clearly defined. In the older areas the mountains have been shaped and eroded by the action of sea, rain, and wind. Their aspects thus include sharp and craggy silhouettes; abrupt, vertically grooved cliffs pocked with caves; deep valleys; collapsed craters (calderas); and coastal plains.

The different islands possess special geographical and cultural features which distinguish them from the other islands of Hawaii and Polynesia. COASTLINES AND HIGHEST ELEVATIONS OF EACH ISLAND The Hawaiian Islands were all formed by volcanoes that erupted above the surface of the ocean beginning in a pattern that goes southeast from the oldest to the youngest islands. The first and oldest island is Kure in the extreme northwest portion of the Hawaiian archipelago. Nearby Midway Atoll was the second Hawaiian volcano to break the surface of the ocean and it lies over a thousand-two hundred miles northwest of the eight major Hawaiian islands. Stretching more that twelve hundred miles from Midway to Niihau are over 130 small islands, islets and shoals which begin the expanse which is almost 1,600 miles from Kure in the northwest corner to the Big Island of Hawaii in the southeast corner. The smaller islands closest to the eight major Hawaiian Islands, which are the youngest in the Hawaiian chain, are Nihoa and Kaula which are nearest to Niihau in the extreme northwest portion of the eight major Hawaiian islands. HAWAII
T he Hawaiian archipelago is a string of islands and reefs, 3,300 kilometers long, that forms a broad arc in the mid-Pacific. The archipelago begins in the east with the island of Hawaii and ends almost at the international date line with a small speck in the ocean called Kure Atoll ( Map 16 : 21K). Only the easternmost 650 kilometers of the state contains islands of any size, as well as almost all of the state's population. It is this portion that is usually considered as the actual "Hawaii." The eight main islands of HawaiiOahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau, and Kahoolawecontain more than 99 percent of the state's land area and all but a handful of its people. The island of Hawaii, at 8,150 square kilometers, comprises nearly two-thirds of the state's total area, and it is often referred to as simply the Big Island. The smallest of the eight, Kahoolawe, is 125 square kilometers and is uninhabited. LOCATION AND PHYSICAL SETTING Hawaii is near the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Honolulu, the state capital, is 3,850 kilometers west of San Francisco, California, 6,500 kilometers east of Tokyo, Japan, and roughly 7,300 kilometers northeast of the Australian coast. This might be viewed as a case of extreme isolation, and until the last few centuries this was probably true. But as countries around the Pacific Basin began to communicate more with one another and to use the ocean's resources, these islands became an important center of interaction.

(University of Hawaii) Biogeography is the study of how geography affects the biological world. Geographic features play a dominant role in shaping Hawaii’s natural world and make it a great place for biogeographic studies. The Hawaiian islands make up the most extensive archipelago on earth. They contain an incredible diversity of terrain, habitat, and climate zones. Because of its continuous formation over the hot spot, Hawaii represents the world’s longest timeline of island formation. Scientists ‘travel through time’ as they study this island chain. Hawaii’s extreme isolation has been the foremost influencing factor in the unique evolution of these islands. At right is a world map with Hawaii at the center (as all maps should be.)
