    SENATOR INOUYE ANNOUNCES
    $48 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANTS AWARDED TO HAWAII
    Wednesday, October 11, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WASHINGTON, D.C. – United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye is pleased to announce that $48.042 million in federal grants were awarded last month to various Hawaii groups. Please see the chart below for details of the grant awards. The awards include a $6.9 million grant to the City and County of Honolulu. The City will use the funds to construct a transit facility on a 21-acre parcel in Pearl City to store, maintain, and service buses. The City will also use the award to purchase 26 buses to replace aging vehicles. Senator Inouye was instrumental in securing the funds for this grant award under the Fiscal Year 1999 and the Fiscal Year 2000 Department of Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriations bills. "The release of these funds will help the City and County of Honolulu improve its mass transit system, particularly the routes and services in the growing central and west Oahu neighborhoods," Senator Inouye said. "As more and more islanders move to the suburbs of Honolulu, the demand for an effective bus system increases. The new facility and buses will help to make commuting via the bus system an even more convenient choice for residents." In addition to the funds received from grant awards, Hawaii organizations received federal funds in the form of loans. They are as follows:

    COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE
    The Cooperative Extension Service (CES), a cooperative alliance between the United States Department of Agriculture and State Land Grant Universities, was established in 1914 by an act of Congress, and is considered to have played an important role in contributing toward the establishment and success of modern agricultural production in the U.S. However, because of its magnitude, and due to the fast developments in the marketplace over the second part of this century, the CES has been caught out of synch, and is now trying to catch up to update the methodology used to deliver timely and appropriate information to meet the needs of the today's sophisticated horticultural industry.
    UH-CES PROGRAM
    OBJECTIVES
    The objectives of the University of Hawaii Vegetable Extension Program is to develop appropriate technological packages (cultivar, fertilizer and irrigation rates, planting densities, pest control programs) for the major 20-30 vegetables grown locally. Recommendations from these packages are extrapolated to develop "best-estimate" recommendations for the production of related minor crops which do not receive research attention at UH.

    Bank of Hawaii Appoints Ten New Executive Vice Presidents;
    Forms New Operating Committee

    Honolulu, Hawaii (December 20, 2001) Michael E. O'Neill, Chairman and CEO of Bank of Hawaii and Pacific Century Financial Corp., announced today the appointment of nine new Executive Vice Presidents from senior vice president positions. They are: Kathy Fujihara-Chong, Business Banking Division; Robert Crowell, Treasury; Joseph Donalson III, Pacific Century Leasing; Wayne Hamano, Hawaii Commercial Banking Division; Peter Ho, Corporate Banking; Tom Koide, Hawaii Branch Division; Ron Leach, West Pacific Banking Division; Derek Norris, Audit Services Division and Mary Sellers, Credit Review. In addition, the bank announced the hiring of Steve Champion as EVP and Manager-Capital Markets. He joins the bank from Aetna International, where he was chief investment officer. The EVPs will join a newly formed Operating Committee to consist of all EVPs and the bank's nine-member Managing Committee. The Operating Committee will be charged with continued implementation of the corporation's strategic plan, which was announced earlier this year. Efforts will be directed toward three key business units: retail banking, commercial banking and financial services. O'Neill says the promotions are in recognition of the strategic nature of these positions and the critical leadership role the people play within the organization. "These are highly regarded professionals who know the Hawaii market and have outstanding reputations within the local community," he added. "This also brings additional depth to the management bench and will be integral to our succession planning efforts. They will be the executives guiding our company in the future."
