CONGRESS APPROVES MORE THAN $93.3 MILLION FOR HAWAII LABOR, HEALTH, AND EDUCATION INITIATIVES TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington, D.C. United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye is pleased to announce that the Congress approved $ 93.3 million in funding for labor, health, and education programs in Hawaii. These initiatives are in the Fiscal Year 2001 Labor, Health and Education Appropriations measure, which was part of the final budget deal negotiated between the Congressional leadership and the White House, and passed by the Congress late Friday. The measure is awaiting the President's final approval. "I am especially pleased that the labor-related initiatives continue to receive support from my colleagues. These programs are based on the concept of 'helping people help themselves.' Thus far, these programs have proven effective in providing the people of Hawaii with the job skills that lead to economic independence and rewarding careers," Senator Inouye said. This measure also includes funding for both the Native Hawaiian Education Act and the Native Hawaiian Health Care Act. These acts became law in 1988 and were reauthorized in 1994.

WIC HAWAII WIC PROGRAM Background In its concern over the high infant mortality rate in the United States and the health and nutritional status of pregnant women and young children, Congress in 1972 established the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) under the authority of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. As a two-year pilot program, WIC was designed, in part, to address the 1969 White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health, which concluded that nutritional deficiencies posed a health threat to low-income women and children and increased medical costs. Permanently authorized in 1974, WIC served approximately 88,000 women and children at a cost of $10.4 million. Participation has increased to 7.4 million in 1997, with an appropriation of $3.7 billion. For fiscal year 1999, the WIC program has received an appropriation of $3.924 billion. The Hawaii WIC Program currently serves over 36,000 participants, who during Federal Fiscal Year 1999, redeemed approximately 1,080,000 food instruments worth over $25.5 million. The WIC program operates in all 50 states and 4 U.S. Territories. There are also 33 Indian Tribal Organizations operating WIC programs. Within each state, funds are distributed to qualified agencies. Hawaii WIC clinics are operated under the auspices of the Hawaii WIC Services Branch of the Hawaii State Department of Health.

Submit Info HDA Dietitian Spotlight Amy Beth Tousman Outpatient Dietitian, Straub Clinic and Hospital's Health Education Center Outstanding Dietitian of the Year, 2005 HFD President, 2005-2006 Amy was born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1959. When Amy was a freshman in college, she took a basic nutrition class and found it fascinating. It made her realize how poor her eating habits were and inspired her to try and eat in a healthier manner. The main reason she became a dietitian was to empower people to improve their health through their food choices. She received her BS degree in Dietetics from the University of Maryland in 1979. Amy had always wanted to come back to Hawaii since she visited the islands when she was in high school. An opportunity presented itself when she decided to apply for a master's degree program. She wanted to apply to a program that would include a work-experience component in public health, with an emphasis in maternal and pediatric nutrition or in wellness. She applied to various masters programs and University of Hawaii was one of her choices.

Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs Summary of Accomplishments 2002 INTRODUCTION The fact that "Urban" Extension is catching on from the bustling cities of northern America to quieter southern plains should come as no surprise to anyone. Extension has a rich history of serving agricultural communities, rural families, and youth. But that role is changing as land-grant universities create new and nontraditional programs to address the needs of expanding urban populations across the country. Alabama is no exception! The 2000 Census data reveals that the state experienced a 70% growth in its urban population compared to over 60% in 1990. Shifts in population and the associated family, community and environmental concerns are now global issues. Worldwide, urban areas are expected to surpass rural areas in population by 2005, and Alabama's Extension System is prepared! Operating in its fifth year as a fully functioning base program unit of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs, entered the year 2002 with a new four-year cycle of goals and objectives.
