Courses in Area I are designed to provide basic analytical, computational, and communication skills including quantitative methods, critical analysis, and reading and writing skills. These competencies will provide a foundation enabling the student to acquire the broader knowledge in Areas II and III. Area I courses will prepare the student for success in other university courses including those in his or her major, and will provide the skills needed to care for and maintain the body. With these tool skills, the student will be ready for a lifetime of learning. Courses in Area II present the fundamental knowledge of humankind. These courses introduce students in a general rather than in a technical way to the ideas, orientations, theories, methodologies, contributions and cultural heritage of various disciplines and professions.

SAF aims to promote academic freedom and diversity By Brandon WilbornKa Leo, 02/19/04 "You can't get a good education if they're only telling you half the story," is the leading slogan for the academic freedom campaign championed by David Horowitz. His nonprofit organization, Students for Academic Freedom, is leading the rally against the liberal bias they perceive on college campuses nationwide. Their "Academic Bill of Rights" is under review by several state legislations in efforts to promote greater intellectual diversity on college campuses. Though there is no SAF chapter at the University of Hawai'i, their proposal argues that all public universities should follow standards of academic freedom and diversity. SAF wants to prevent every university system from being oppressively one-sided or over weighted in any direction. The bill, however, doesn't prevent educators or students from having political views and expressing them, but encourages discussion. Several forums on different forms of the bill have been held on campus in recent years. Acquainted with the academic freedom movement since 1998, UH-Manoa's Political Science Professor Richard Chadwick has participated in those forums.

CONGRESS APPROVES MORE THAN $93.3 MILLION FOR HAWAII LABOR, HEALTH, AND EDUCATION INITIATIVES
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington, D.C. United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye is pleased to announce that the Congress approved $ 93.3 million in funding for labor, health, and education programs in Hawaii. These initiatives are in the Fiscal Year 2001 Labor, Health and Education Appropriations measure, which was part of the final budget deal negotiated between the Congressional leadership and the White House, and passed by the Congress late Friday. The measure is awaiting the President's final approval. "I am especially pleased that the labor-related initiatives continue to receive support from my colleagues. These programs are based on the concept of 'helping people help themselves.' Thus far, these programs have proven effective in providing the people of Hawaii with the job skills that lead to economic independence and rewarding careers," Senator Inouye said. This measure also includes funding for both the Native Hawaiian Education Act and the Native Hawaiian Health Care Act. These acts became law in 1988 and were reauthorized in 1994.
