General Information
The University of Hawaii System
The mission of the University of Hawaii system is to provide quality college and university education and training; create knowledge through research and scholarship; provide service through extension, technical assistance, and training; contribute to the cultural heritage of the community; and respond to state needs. The campuses, organized under one board, differentially emphasize instruction, research, and service. The system's special distinction is found in its Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific orientation and international leadership role. Common values bind the system together: aloha; academic freedom and intellectual vigor; institutional integrity and service; quality and opportunity; diversity, fairness, and equity; collaboration and respect; and accountability and fiscal integrity. The University seal contains a torch and a book titled Malamalama in the center of a circular map of the Pacific, surrounded by the state motto, Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina i ka pono ("The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness"). The University motto, inscribed in both the Hawaiian and English languages on Founders' Gate at the Manoa campus is Maluna a'e o na lahui a pau ke ola ke kanaka ("Above all nations is humanity"). The motto is reflected in the ethnic diversity of UH students: 20 percent Caucasian, 20 percent Japanese, 15 percent Filipino, 13 percent Hawaiian or part Hawaiian, and 32 percent other ethnicities.

On behalf of the State of Hawaii, Governor Linda Lingle presented a commendation to National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia at this historic event.
The Department of Accounting and General Services, commonly known as DAGS, is headed by the State Comptroller, who concurrently serves as the director of DAGS. The department is responsible for managing and supervising a wide range of State programs and activities. The opening reception for a modern art exhibit at the State Art Museum doubled as the one-year anniversary celebration for the Hawai`i Capital Cultural District. Speaking at the event, Governor Lingle noted that she partnered with the arts and culture community and Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris last October in creating the district, which extends from Kalihi to Pi`ikoi streets and from Beretania Street to the ocean. The district includes more than 25 civic buildings, museums, historic sites, galleries, entertainment venues, businesses and restaurants that make the area a culturally significant and vibrant destination. The Governor praised the district as a great partnership between government and private stakeholders. The State Art Museum will feature a caf©, bookstore and open lanai reception area. An information kiosk for the cultural district will be located on the first floor.
