Hawaii! Teaching about the 50th State
Hawaii celebrated its 40th anniversary of statehood on August 21, 1999! Take a tour of this exotic state, examine its wildlife, creep to the volcano's edge, and discover the wealth of culture and diversity that isolation can bring. Aloha! After 20 years of classroom teaching, Lena Kanemori of Enchanted Lake Elementary School in Kailua, Hawaii, became a technology coordinator and teacher of the gifted and talented. While studying endangered species, she was shocked to discover that Hawaii has the greatest number of endangered species of all of the United States. In response to this revelation and as an introductory Web-publishing project, she and her students created Endangered Species of Hawaii "Three years ago, when my students were involved in their study of Hawaii's endangered species, they were amazed, and I was more so, to find out that we had the most endangered species in the nation," Kanemori told Education World. "Finding out why we had so many endangered species was also most distressing."

By JULIANNE BASINGER
Honolulu As president of the University of Hawaii System, Evan S. Dobelle kept in his office here a bucket of plastic crabs tipped on its side, a few fake crustaceans scattered across the floor. The scene was meant to send a message about his mission in Hawaii, a place where Mr. Dobelle says people had clawed and pulled each other into a trap of sustained mediocrity.
Calling himself a "change agent," he blew into town three years ago, donned a flower-print shirt, and set about upsetting the bucket. Arriving from the mainland's establishment East Coast, where he had earned national attention for his transformation of Trinity College, in Connecticut, he vowed to help the university system and the state to "think big." Mr. Dobelle received a warm aloha when he arrived in Hawaii. It didn't last. He was fired last month "for cause" a rare circumstance in academe. He left having alienated Hawaii's Board of Regents, state lawmakers, and faculty and staff members. The split has been ugly, marred by public recriminations. Mr. Dobelle has threatened to sue, and both sides and their lawyers have begun mediation over the terms of his departure. The regents were scheduled to meet last week to discuss a settlement.

As the Board of education met on October 16, so did the Charter School Network, Then we will have witnessed a revolution in education in hawaii.
http://www.hawaiiislandjournal.com/stories/11a03b.html
Charter Schools in Hawaii:
A New Beginning? By Jack Kelly There is a lot of talk these days about our schools here in Hawai'i, most of it negative. Low test scores, overcrowded classrooms, aging facilitates, and a continued lack of funding from the legislature are all elements of the ongoing discourse.
There are those, however, including State House Speaker Calvin Say, who believe that Hawaii's schools are on the right track.
In early October, Governor Linda Lingle, who campaigned heavily on the educational issue, unveiled her blueprint for major educational reform at the Capitol in Honolulu.
Looking over the crowd in attendance, some observers commented that it didn't seem that all the stakeholders in the community were present.
AP writer Bruce Dunford quoted Senate President Robert Bunda as saying his office had received no notice of the forum. Lingle's senior advisor, Randy Roth, acknowledged that no notice was given to the public or news media about the forum.
Lingle used the event to announce the formation of a 22-member group of educators, community leaders and concerned residents to be known as CARE, the Citizens to Achieve Reform in Education.

Always be sure that any school you choose is accredited by state and/or national boards of cosmetology by contacting the associations mentioned below and the appropriate state board. The institution you choose must be accredited and able to issue forms needed to apply for a student visa. Be sure that any certificate you receive recognised in your home country, as you will be required to return home after your course of study. Consider how long your programme of study will take, the total cost of the programme (tuition plus all living expenses times the number of years in the programme), and whether you will be allowed to use equipment or receive work experience. US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements , loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. We recommend visiting the sites for both your state of residence and for the states of the colleges to which you are applying. A B C D ...
