Interview - University of Hawaii
Tae-Kyung Ha from South Korea is studying at . He is a Communications major taking courses in ESL in addition to Communications and Business.
Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.? This country is a world leader in economics, politics, and business and American music and movies are famous all over the world. I also wanted to learn about American culture and attitudes. How did you choose your intensive English program? I decided to study here because the University of Hawai`i is well-known and prestigious for their linguistics, English as a Second Language, and teacher-training programs. What do you like best? The teachers are always kind and take time to explain the lessons in detail. The professors and students are very friendly and open-minded to Asian students. The English Language Institute (ELI) program is very intensive and demanding, but useful. What do you miss most? I often want to eat Korean food that my mother makes, although the food in Hawai`i is good. How has your English improved?

Willamina to offer Chinook immersion
Oregon: The Willamina School District and the Grand Ronde Tribe plan to launch a Chinook language immersion program for first and second grade students. The curriculum will be offered to 15-20 tribal and nontribal students. Until recently the Chinook jargon, also known as Chinuk-wawa, was almost extinct. Interest has rebounded in recent years. The tribe is now trying to make it the language of the future. Tony Johnson is working with the district to create the program and has helped create a written Chinuk-wawa alphabet and computer program for Chinuk-wawa characters can be typed.

Schools for the Gifted
The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. For a private school perspective, read

Chapter IX. Previous Chapter Next Chapter Isolation of the Mission Families Sufferings on the Inter-lsland Voyages Their Dangers Parting with our Children School Discussions and Festivals Native Preachers Cheerful Givers Changes and Improvements. IN the early years of the mission, the trials of separation were often severe. Hawaii was not only far from all the outer world, but our islands were separated one from another by wide and windy channels, with no regular and safe packets, and no postal arrangements, or regular means of communication. Add to this, many parts of the islands were so broken by ravines, by precipices, and dangerous streams, and so widely sundered by broad tracts of lava, without house, or pool of water to refresh the weary and thirsty traveler, and without roads withal, that social intercourse was impossible without great toil and suffering. As to beloved friends and kindred in the far-off fatherland, it seemed like an age before we could speak to them and receive answers. I think it was eighteen months before we received answers to our first letters sent from Hilo to the United States, a period long enough for revolutions among the nations as well as in families.

The Arizona Republic
Jul. 6, 2003 12:00 AM I am from Dennehotso, in northern Arizona. In Navajo, it means "green meadows." For the past three generations, members of my family had to leave this valley that is surrounded by red rocks for jobs and education.
Dennehotso is a reservation town without everyday conveniences of life. It's a place that teaches you to work hard. For me, it carries memories of my family: sheepherding, making fry bread and playing in the cornfields.
Leaving the reservation is like leaving behind a security blanket of family routines: eating together, speaking Navajo and protecting each other. Living away from the reservation is like a war. You are not sure whether you are going to survive or die. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
The way to survive is to overcome the homesickness by holding onto the memories, identity, and tradition. I learned this from my grandfather and father, who were forced to leave the reservation but were also able to survive and come home.

Introduction
The Navajo people, called Dine', are from the southwestern four corner states of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. After the Treaty of 1868 was signed between the Navajo and the United States government, the government felt responsible for the education of Navajo children. As a result, boarding schools were created and children were taken from their families and taught to bury their traditional Navajo culture in these schools. At boarding school, children were forbidden to speak their language and they were punished severely if caught. Many people tried to hide their children from officers who came to put them in the schools, but a lot of children were taken anyway. In the Navajo culture, it is emphasized that people should always be aware of the enemy. They should always be prepared to fight to protect their land and their people. Besides the Anglos, the Navajo did not realize that a more ominous enemy would threaten them. During World War II, the Japanese wanted to gain worldwide control. However, a major obstacle was the presence of the United States Navy in the Northern Pacific. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the American Navy at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The bombing of Pearl Harbor had a great impact on the Navajo. Many Navajo men reacted to the Japanese attack and reported for duty to the Indian agency for they felt they had been prepared for battle their entire lives. Some even came on horseback with their own rifles not knowing where they were exactly going.
