http://www.bigduck.com/primer.html
A Harpsichord Primer The harpsichord is that family of keyboard instruments which are plucked, not struck, by the key mechanism. It has served as the major string keyboard instrument for substantially longer than its descendant the piano, and still at the end of the millenium is much in use, both in early music performance and in various new applications. There are perhaps three distinctions which help catagorize the instruments. There are national schools (chiefly Flemish, Italian, French, German, and English), time frame (conveniently thought of by century - 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th), and instrument type (harpsichord, spinette, virginal, but with several rich and strange variations, such as the lautenwerk or the clavicyntherium). The history of the harpsichord is somewhat odd in that it contains a dramatic hiatus: harpsichord making simply died in the nineteenth century (a victim, some will argue, of Romanticism) and was only revived again in the twentieth. At first the revival engendered some very different kinds of instruments indeed, and it is only in the second half of the century that we find the emphasis again on early styles of building. We are able then to make the additional distinction between historic, revival, and modern instruments.

www.harpsichord.org.uk
The British Harpsichord Society promotes the awareness, enjoyment, study, performance and ownership of harpsichords and related plucked keyboard instruments in Britain. Our aim is to create more public awareness and get more people enjoying and playing the harpsichord.
Harpsichords, spinets and virginals are included. Pianos, fortepianos and clavichords are not, but we are happy to point people to complementary organisations such as the British Clavichord Society. It is intended to complement many existing harpsichord resources and sources of information, to be as comprehensive as possible. It is also intended to arrange meetings, talks and concerts to bring together people interested in harpsichords. All offers and suggestions gratefully received.
Who is it for?
Anyone with an interest or occupation related to the harpsichord. Amateur or professional, music lover, performer, teacher, builder or collector. The list is inclusive not exclusive. The British Harpsichord Society membership list will not be published but we will be pleased to be publicly associated with those members who so wish. Those on the brink of an interest in harpsichords are welcome as are those with a lifetime of skill and experience, and all others in between. Those with much to offer will enrich the Society. One day some of those who came with little to offer will take their places. The focus is on Britain but overseas members with an interest in harpsichords are welcomed.

Introduction
The term pedal harpsichord, called by the Germans "Clavecimbelpedal" indicates 2 types of instruments:
- an ordinary harpsichord under which pedal keys are located which pluck the lowest keys of the harpsichord using strings or some other mechanism. in other words, it is a harpsichord with pedals permanently connected. - an ordinary harpsichord placed on a second harpsichord which is played by the pedal keys. The two instruments are thus completely independent one of the other, the pedal harpsichord having its own strings and registers. Those interested in the historical aspect of the instrument, will read with interest the article by Karin Ford "The pedal clavicord and the pedal harpsichord" in the review Galpin Society Journal, No 50 (March 1997) or the dissertation of Etienne Baillot (CNR of Paris, 1991). German harpsichords
To come to the reasons which prompted me to order such an instrument, I go back a few years. Since the 1990s musicians and makers of harpsichords began to be interested in the German old instruments after a kind of hegemony of the French and Flemish instruments

Specifications include a 1 x 8' disposition (single choir (one string per note), middle C corresponds to middle C on other instruments), single manual (one keyboard), 61 note range (5 octaves, C-c'''', A415), 6 x 3 ft. dimension, approximate 150 lbs. weight, and an estimated 100,000 LEGO piece count. The strings (brass gauges .012-.018 and steel gauges .008-.012) exert approximately 325 lbs. of tension. Audio example It's taken two years of theorizing, designing, collecting parts, building, testing, and rebuilding. Originally, upon thinking about the potentials of making a LEGO musical instrument, I had hoped to reproduce a piano, but ditched the idea due to the enormous tension involved (40,000 lbs.)there's a reason why pianos have steel frames. Its ancestor, the harpsichord, seemed more practically possiblethe key/jack workings are simple levers, the strings are plucked, it's smaller, and it maintains less tension. Coincidentally, I was in my Bach phase anyways.
The important considerations during design were strength, efficiency, and durability. Anticipating the tension of the strings, the instrument had to be built strong, yet be able to incorporate the functions and mechanisms on a lifesize scale. With many moving parts, it also had to withstand the repeated demands of a keyboard instrument. Several prototypes of the various sections were made. After finalizing designs, I started amassing the necessary LEGO parts.

The harpsichord is the largest and most complex of the plucked keyboard instruments, usually having more than one keyboard (or manual). Technically, the harpsichord belongs in the plucked zither family (psaltery) because it produces sound through a mechanical action which plucks the strings with a small plectrum made out of quill. The result is a crisp tone and clear melody. The harpsichord is used for solo performances, accompaniment in chamber groups and in larger ensembles. Typically, there are two sets of strings per key, tuned to the same pitch or an octave apart.
References to harpsichords can be found as early as the 14th century. In Italian music, it is used mainly as an accompaniment to singing and not as a solo instrument. Prior to the 17th century, composers usually made no distinction between what they wrote for the harpsichord, the organ, or the clavichord.

var tcdacmd="cc=art;dt"; Encyclopedia harpsichord, stringed musical instrument played from a keyboard. Its strings, two or more to a note, are plucked by quills or jacks. The harpsichord originated in the 14th cent. and by the 16th cent. Venice was the center of its manufacture. At that time its prevailing shape was winglike, similar to that of a grand piano. The square harpsichord, often called spinet , became more common in the late 16th cent., when harpsichord making in the northern countries surpassed that of Italy. Perhaps the greatest craftsmen were the Ruckers family of Antwerp (late 16th–17th cent). Varying the touch in harpsichord playing does not alter the quality or volume of tone; to provide dynamic variety, octave couplers and various stops that change the tone were introduced. Contrast in volume and in tone color is made easier by the addition of a second keyboard, or manual, found on German harpsichords from the late 16th cent. and on Italian ones from c.1665. The instrument provided the basic support of virtually all the various combinations of instruments as chamber music and orchestral forms developed. In the 19th cent. the harpsichord, which required frequent tuning and replacement of quills, was superseded in general use by the piano. Since the mid-20th cent. however, the older instrument has had a revival in popularity.

Welcome to the home page of Maurici Piano and Harpsichord. I build, repair and restore Harpsichords, Fortepiaonos and Clavichords as well as tune and service modern pianos. My current offerings include Harpsichords, Clavichords and Fortepianos.
Virtually all the parts that go into my pieces are hand made using materials that match closely those used on the original instruments. Of course if there is a modern material that in my opinion is superior to that used on early keyboards I will use it. My philosophy is simple. I endeavor to make the best instruments both tonally and constructionally as I know how for the most reasonable price to the customer. I am well aware that there are many people who would love to own a handcrafted instrument but the price is just out of their reach. It is my belief that a well-made clavichord, harpsichord, or fortepiano should be affordable to almost anyone who truly wants one. I invite you to browse through my site. On the INSTRUMENTS page you will find photos of pieces already completed along with descriptions and prices. The ABOUT ME page will give you a brief and I hope not too boring autobiography of myself. The "TASKIN 1769" was built by Pascal Taskin in 1769. It has a typical French sound of rare elegance with deep and warm low tones. The "Goermans - Taskin" was originally a Flemish harpsichord that Taskin transformed (ravalement) into a great French instrument. Its bright and sonorous voice makes it particularly suitable for a wide repertoire and for large concert halls. "Flemish" Harpsichord, double manual "Ruckers 1638" This instrument is based upon the famous harpsichord made by Ioannes Ruckers in 1638, one of the most interesting instruments made by the great master, the only one existing with its original keyboard. "German" Harpsichord, double manual 'Zell 1728' This instrument is based upon the famous Hamburg harpsichord made by Christian Zell in 1728. Its musical elegance and refined look bring to the memory the name of J.S. Bach and the great German harpsichord tradition. "Italian" Harpsichords 'Giusti 1679': This instrument is inspired to the original belonging to the Tagliavini Collection which was built by Giovan Battista GIUSTI in 1679. Its sound is wide and round, unusual thing for an "Italian" and makes it particularly suitable for a wide solo repertoire and for the "basso continuo".

History and Description The harpsichord is a keyboard instrument common from about 1500 to 1800, during the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and revived in the early 20th century.
Although it looks much like a piano, the harpsichord uses quills called plectrums to pluck the strings rather than hammers to strike them. This gives the harpsichord a harsh, percussive sound. Many harpsichords have a second set of strings pitched an octave higher or lower to create changes in volume. Otherwise, the harpsichord plays at the same volume no matter how hard or soft the keys are pressed.
Unlike the clavichord whose strings are placed perpendicular to the keys, the harpsichord is shaped like a grand piano, the strings stretching away from the player in the same direction as the keys.
