Harpsichord (Italian cembalo; French clavecin), stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are plucked to produce sound. It was developed in Europe in the 14th or 15th century and was widely used from the 16th to the early 19th century, when it was superseded by the piano. In the 20th century the harpsichord was revived for performance of music of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, as well as for new compositions. The incisive sound quality of the plucked metal strings adds clarity to melodic lines. The harpsichord is particularly effective in performing contrapuntal music—that is, music that consists of two or more melodies played at the same time, such as that of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
The earliest school of harpsichord building developed in Italy in the 16th and 17th centuries. Italian harpsichords differed from others in that they normally were made of extremely thin wood and then placed in a stronger outer case of the same shape. A second important school of building developed in the 16th and 17th centuries in Flanders, centered around the influential Ruckers family of builders. These schools gave way in the 18th century to distinctive styles of building that developed in France (the Blachet family), Germany (the Hass family), and England (Jacob Kirkman). Harpsichords of the different national schools varied in details of their proportions and construction, resulting in slight, although characteristic differences in tone color.

Trevor Pinnock
... Trevor Pinnock ABSTRACT Email us if you'd like to know how to obtain the full article. Hints for Choosing a Harpsichord This is very old information but still applicable. There has been updating and some new research but the basic information still holds. Larry Palmer, The Diapason , September 1972 Figuring out which harpsichord to buy can be a challenge but it is easier than learning how to play the instrument musically. More and more harpsichords today are built based on designs of one of the national schools: Italian, Flemish, French, English, or German. Features of these instruments include a thin soundboard, thin and lightweight construction that allow for sound resonance, 1 to 3 sets of strings, precisely and evenly regulated action, and non-bushed keys. The finest builders of harpsichords are in high demand. Investigate local options as well as nationally known builders. Many local builders start with kits from the master builders. Others build from their own designs. With careful comparison and investigation of local builders, you can end up with an instrument every bit as good (and many times even better) as those from the national builders. Buying locally may allow you to get an instrument quicker, perhaps for less money while supporting your local musical community. You will also be able to consult your local builder on advice for maintaining and repairing your instrument.

JENSEN HARPSICHORDS DAVID JENSEN, Harpsichord Maker Bloomington, Indiana harpsichordman@sbcglobal.net
Welcome to my updated online catalogue and information center.
Update March 1, 2004 For more than a quarter century I have been making harpsichords and clavichords for individuals and institutions across North America. My instruments are entirely custom made to suit my customer's needs and desires. The designs I use are drawn from antique instruments of proven musical value; the materials I use and the methods I use to make my harpsichords are the very best I have been able to find. My harpsichords are remarkably close to the originals, especially with respect to the sound they produce and the feel of the action. I am also very concerned about the musical and functional utility of the harpsichords I make. So while they are historically accurate, they are also easy to live with. My harpsichords are entirely made by hand, right down to the tuning pins; I use no kits or kit parts. At left is a French double after Blanchet made for the Music Department at the University of North Dakota. This harpsichord stands as an example of my finest work. This instrument is a survivor of the great Red River flood of 1997. After repairs were made, the instrument sounded and played just as well, if not better, than it had originally!

Prelude / Fugue / Sarabande / Gigue / Double 8: PEDAL-HARPSICHORD: Concerto for harpsichord solo after Vivaldi, BWV 593 Total time 78:23 Our musical selection on this disc offers a number of important, perhaps unjustly neglected pieces from Bach's rich output for keyboard and/or lute. At the same time, we are using these pieces to demonstrate the different domestic keyboard instruments of Bach's time – his home in fact: the harpsichord with pedalboard, and the clavichord, together with the lute whose delicate sounds Bach sought in the lute-harpsichord. The harpsichord was the baroque period's most popular domestic keyboard instrument, though the clavichord would be a close second. The harpsichord with the usual two manuals was a useful practice instrument for organists, and they were generally equipped with separate, organ-type pedalboards. The harpsichord's "pluck" was fixed and no variation of touch was possible, only dynamic variation through using different "stops" and/or combining, coupling-up keyboards.

39. Baroque German Harpsichord Music
harpsichord Music. instruments, Performance, Discography The baroque German harpsichord was undoubtedly a substantial and splendid instrument!
http://www.baroquecds.com/bqgerhp.html
Baroque German
Harpsichord Music Instruments,
Performance,
Discography It is unlikely that the lightweight, light-sounding almost jangle of the supposedly "authentic" baroque harpsichord would have been heard in Bach's Germany. The German baroque harpsichord was considerably more substantial, both in construction and sound output, with a wider specification including 16' stop, and optionally equipped with a separate, organ-style pedalboard used for domestic organ practice.
In Bach's Leipzig, there was an established tradition of Collegia Musica, secular musical organizations run mainly by the students of the city's famed university, and contributing music of the highest quality. In the spring of 1729, Bach took over directorship of the Collegium founded in 1702 by Telemann, its performances given weekly in Zimmermann's Coffee House on the fashionable Catherine Strasse, centrally placed close to the Marktplatz. Himself an enthusiastic amateur musician, Gottfried Zimmerman frequently re-equipped his establishment with the latest musical instruments for use by the Collegium and other musical guests. One of his prize possessions in the late 1720s was "a clavcymbel of large size and range of expressivity" which was a Leipzig attraction in itself. It was replaced by an "even finer instrument" in 1733. The baroque German harpsichord was undoubtedly a substantial and splendid instrument! Solid and Sonorous
Unlike the Flemish and French harpsichords, the baroque German harpsichord was a heavier, more solidly-built instrument with deeper sonority. The organ chorale, and organ music generally, played an important part in German religious life, and in terms of sonority the baroque German harpsichord could almost be considered as a domestic organ. Indeed Gottfried Silbermann, famed Saxon organ-builder, friend and contemporary of Bach, also built harpsichords in his Freiberg workshops.
