However, whatever one's taste may be for "authenticity", there is no denying that Richter's performance is a superb example of virtuosity that has few equals. Richter's frequent use of the 16 foot stop in his playing is effective in bringing out a sense of grandeur in Bach's music and puts to shame the ninny sounding performances of Bach's music using historic harpsichord instruments. 6. Surviving French Harpsichords
instruments built or rebuilt in France in the 17th and 18th Centuries, known to have survived into the 20th.
    http://websquad.com/harpsichord/french/
    Annotated List of Instruments
by Dr. R. Dean Anderson The following list documents all extant harpsichords presently known to have been built or rebuilt in France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Also included are a few instruments that survived into the twentieth century but have since been lost or destroyed. The instruments in the annotated list are divided into three periods that coincide with the reigns of Louis XIV (1643-1715), Louis XV (1715-1774) and Louis XVI (1774-1793). Each period subdivides into three groups. The first includes instruments emanating from Paris, the hub of French musical activity during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the second, instruments from Lyon and the Rhône Valley, which exhibit many similarities; and the third, instruments from other French provinces. The instrument entries are arranged chronologically according to the first known (or supposed) date of work done on the instrument in a French workshop. Most undated instruments for which little information is available are grouped together at the end of each period division. Ascription to a particular time period (e.g., the seventeenth century) is based on an instrument's design, style of decoration, and/or relationship to other instruments. This list is a very much abbreviated version of an annotated list and essay on French harpsichords published in Early Keyboard Journal Information in the instrument entries is organized according to the categories below.

Webside greetings! As you can see I've been building keyboard instruments based on original historical instruments for almost thirty years. I try to determine the type of music my client will play, and present to them optional solutions. A few of my recent clients have specialized in music of the renaissance which requires smaller, more colorful instruments. Although I've built the following double manual harpsichords: Dulcken #1 lives in Toronto. Dulcken #2 lives in Austria. My two manual Zell lives here in Seattle and has been recorded and my two manual Bellot also lives here. If I build more doubles they will be like my copy of the 1667 anon. French in the Boston museum. I also very much like the Tibaut and the Denis doubles. There are far too many makers who turn out the 18th century Blanchet, Hemsh, and Dulckens for me to complete with and I personally like building small practical instruments that most people can afford. I am passionate over small extrovert Italian instruments which are easy to maintain and move about. I feel strongly that the true musician should seriously explore the Clavichord since it is so challenging

A History of the Harpsichord Edward L. Kottick Based on painstaking research, the book considers the place of the instrument in society and vividly describes the market forces that brought about changes in its form, decoration, and cultural importance. An accompanying CD includes performances on several of the historical instruments described and illustrated in the volume, including a 1580 spinett virginal by Martin van der Biest and instruments built by Ruckers and Pleyel. The volume devotes attention to American harpsichord design as well as to present and future uses of the instrument. Instrument maker, scholar, researcher, author, and lecturer, musicologist Edward L. Kottick built his first harpsichord in 1963. He has investigated the instrument's acoustical properties as well as its historical aspects, and has published articles on the harpsichord in both scientific and scholarly journals. His collection of more than 3,000 slides, a product of his visits to the major museums in the U.S. and Europe, keeps him in demand as a speaker. This began his long association with David Way and Zuckermann harpsichords. He served as an Agent for ZHI for almost 30 years, during which time he finished off over 70 ZHI instruments, helped many amateurs build their own instruments, and supplied harpsichords for hundreds of concerts throughout the Southwest. Over the years Gerald Self has worked with both ZHI kit parts and with materials made especially for him by David Way. With every instrument he completed, he tried to reach as high a standard of both tonal and visual finishing as possible. He has spent time in Stonington with David Way, and he has made five trips to Europe to study original instruments. Gerald Self has supplied harpsichords for the use of many of the world's finest performing artists and instrumental ensembles, and his instruments are owned by churches, colleges, universities, and performing groups across the Southwest USA. Gerald Self is currently an Associate of Marc Ducornet and The Paris Workshop. He can supply any of the Paris Workshop kits, and he has a display of finished instruments in his San Antonio showroom. He can also deliver any instrument from the Atelier Marc Ducornet catalogue, custom-built in Paris to your specifications. The range of instruments offered by The Paris Workshop and Gerald Self are the result of 40 years experience and research, initiated by Wolfgang Zuckermann, developed by David Jacques Way, and now continued by Marc Ducornet and Emmanuel Danset in Paris. Their in-depth study of original instruments in museums around the world ensures excellent tonal response in each model. In addition to his harpsichord work, Mr. Self teaches recorder, performs with choirs specializing in early music, and for the past 16 years has produced a weekly hour-long early-music radio program for Texas Public Radio. He hosts Musica Antiqua, 9-10 p.m. Wednesdays on Texas Public Radio. In his radio program, Gerald Self explores the very best in early classical music and details the history of the music and discusses the rare instruments on which the music is played. He is also an active member of the Texas Bach Choir. Contents

    16. Harpsichord Touch
Advice for pianists approaching the harpsichord for the first time, including differences in key resistance, size, material and colour between the instruments.
    http://www.serve.com/marbeth/harpsichord_touch.html
The Difference Between Piano and Harpsichord Touch
Anyone who has ever played a harpsichord knows that the touch is entirely different from a piano's. The harpsichord feels "crunchy." This is because in depressing the key you must overcome the resistance the plectrum is exerting against the string. You can *feel* when the plectrum passes by the string. (You can hear it, too, of course, because the harpsichord then sounds that note.) Excess force causes an unpleasant "thumping." A virginal feels the same way. The clavichord's touch is much like an organ's, yet the key dip (the distance the key travels before it reaches the full extent it may be depressed) is extremely shallow. Any excess force will cause the instrument to play out of tune. If you are a pianist approaching the harpsichord for the first time, you might find the following generalities useful:
    • Expect the key resistance, as described above. Also, the key dip probably will be more shallow than a piano's.
    • Most harpsichords have only 4 to 4 1/2 octaves. The compass generally is from C [Great Ctwo octaves below Middle C] to c'' [two-line Ctwo octaves above Middle C] or f'' [two-line F, which is the F above c'']. Occasionally there is a key below C; this may be tuned to Contra B [the B right below Great C] but it is often tuned to Contra G [the G below Great C] in order to provide another V-I in the key of C. Harpsichords sometimes have a "short octave." Clavichords, especially small ones, usually do.

The single manual harpsichord shown first, with matching stool, is in the decorated style with bone natural key coverings, paper decoration, a turned stand and mouldings. The double manual harpsichord is in the moulded style, with our standard ebony keyboard, a turned stand and mouldings.
    Bentside and Triangular Spinets
Our bentside spinet is based on examples of this popular 18th century domestic keyboard instrument. It has a single 8' register and a buff stop. The five octave compass, from F1 to f3, and sonorous tone of this instrument make it suitable for nearly all the solo repertoire and for continuo playing. It shares with the harpsichord a pleasing wing shape which reflects the natural increase in string length from treble to bass. The case is 168×63×15 cm overall. The bentside spinet shown is in solid walnut which we can provide to special order. Some octave spinets with triangular form have survived from the 17th and 18th centuries, though none at normal pitch. However, we have found that a normal pitch triangular spinet, despite the limited compass permitted by the short bass strings, is very versatile for solo and ensemble playing. Our triangular spinet is derived from the bentside form. It has a lively resonant tone quite out of proportion to its modest size. The compass is C to f3, 4½ octaves. The case measures 109×61×15 cm. The triangular spinet shown has chestnut casework. Both our spinets have a pleasing contemporary appearance and are easily portable. Many are used in schools and by groups playing renaissance and baroque music. Because of their straightforward construction the kits are an excellent home or school project, and a good introduction to early keyboard instrument making and playing.
