Calvin Coolidge Warren Gamaliel Harding Thursday November 2 Thursday August 2 ) was the 29th ( President of the United States and the sixth President to die in office. Harding's presidential legacy has never found a consensus among historians, nor among American citizens. Overshadowed by scandals instigated by three of his appointees without his knowledge or consent, Harding has perennially rated at the bottom of some polls by historians. Conversely, other more recent polls have rated his presidency as high as 31st of 40. His death halfway through his term, and the confusion of facts and rumor about him, make a definitive judgment improbable. Harding's place in history may be established in or after 2023 when some of his most personal correspondence is made public. Contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

President Warren G. Harding
American History Study Guide Warren G. Harding When Warren G. Harding died about halfway through his term as president of the United States, he was unaware that several scandals would become the most remarkable events of his administration. Shortly after his death, the public learned that some of his appointees had defrauded (cheated) the government of millions, taken illegal kickbacks (secret payments) from private industry, and sold federal oil leases without proper approval. A career politician, Harding rewarded his strongest supporters with important government posts when he was elected president. Those friends took advantage of Harding's trusting nature. But Harding had personal scandals as well. Although his wife

Now Let Us All Praise Warren G. Harding
by Patrick J. Buchanan
July 9, 1997
O n this year's centennial of the inauguration of William McKinley, Ohio University professor Alfred E. Eckes, a trade official under Ronald Reagan, addressed Ohio's Historical Society. Subject: our 25th president, assassinated by an anarchist in Buffalo in 1901. McKinley's was a truly extraordinary presidency. A teenager at Antietam and Civil War veteran of four years fighting, McKinley took over a nation still wracked by the Panic of 1893. To restore prosperity, he raised tariffs, taxing imports rather than workers, and gave America an annual growth rate of 7 percent! Unemployment in McKinley's tenure fell from 14 percent to 4 percent. Though he did his best to avoid war over Cuba, the blowing up of the battleship Maine in Havana Harbor in 1898 forced McKinley's hand. Within four months, he defeated Spain and captured Cuba annexing Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii and the Philippines. While making America a global power, McKinley ran a budget surplus and cut U.S. debt to $16 per capita. (Today, it is $20,000 per capita.) In 1900, he chose war hero Theodore Roosevelt as vice president and crushed William Jennings Bryan a second time. In slashing the nation's misery index (unemployment plus inflation), McKinley's record, writes Eckes, is superior to any president this century, save one. FDR? Reagan? Nope. FDR ranks fourth, Reagan third. The president who was first at cutting the misery index is Warren G. Harding.

(b. Nov. 2, 1865, Blooming Grove, Ohio, U.S.d. Aug. 2, 1923, San Francisco, Calif.), 29th president of the United States (1921-23), who was elected on a Republican platform pledging a nostalgic "return to normalcy" following World War I. He died during his third year in office and was succeeded by Vice President Calvin Coolidge. In his 20s Harding embarked on a barely successful newspaper venture in Marion, Ohio, but, after he married Florence Kling DeWolfe in 1891, she took charge and the Marion Daily Star prospered. Harding became a director in many local corporations and prominent in fraternal orders. An able public speaker with an impressive manner, he participated in Republican Party campaigns, allying himself with the Ohio political machine. He was elected a state senator (1899-1902), lieutenant governor (1903-04), and U.S. senator (1915-21). His terms in office were undistinguished and marked by conservatism. When three outstanding presidential contenders became deadlocked at the Republicans' nominating convention (June 1920) in Chicago, powerful conservativesmeeting at night in what came to be known traditionally as the "smoke-filled room" of American politicsdecided on Harding as a compromise candidate. Harding eschewed a speaking tour for a "front porch" campaign; the image of the unassuming, undemanding Midwesterner who did not press for domestic reform or international involvement was a welcome relief to war-weary, disillusioned Americans. Harding was voted into office by the widest popular margin60.3 percentrecorded to that time.

Born: November 2, 1865; Corsica, Ohio... First United States senator to be elected president... An air of scandal and corruption infuses the legacy of the Harding administration. His election, predicated on a pledge to return the nation to "normalcy," ushered in a period of conservative Republicanism designed to slow the momentum of progressive legislation. Even the few noble accomplishments achieved by his administration were soon forgotten as tales of cronyism, greed, and influence-peddling came to light. Harding fell from favor with the American public soon after his untimely, and at the time, controversial death... Died: August 2, 1923. The Era

Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.
