Warren G. Harding
29th President
Harding was born in Bloomington Grove, Ohio on November 2, 1865. He lived most of his life in Ohio. He was one of seven Presidents from Ohio. He was a Baptist. He campaigned for the presidency by meeting visiting groups on his front porch in Marion, Ohio. He was the first candidate to hire a speechwriter. At 24, he suffered a nervous breakdown and spent several weeks in a sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was the first President to ride to his inauguration in an automobile. His presidency is ranked by historians as one of the worst, perhaps one step above President Grant's ranking. Warren G. Harding once lost all the White House china gambling, on one hand of cards. Warren had a Airedale dog that sat in his own chair at cabinet meetings. The dog's name was Laddie Boy. Warren Harding formally concluded WWI Loudspeakers were used at his inauguration for the first time in the event's history. His dog, Laddie Boy, delivered his newspaper each day. The dog had a birthday party and a cake made of dog biscuits. He also had his own chair for cabinet meetings.

HARDING, WARREN G.
, twenty-ninth president of the United States. Harding presided over an administration marred by scandal but successful in reducing political acrimony and establishing policies pursued throughout the 1920s. Born near Blooming Grove, Ohio, Harding attended Ohio Central College (1879-1882) and in 1884 became owner-editor of the Marion Star. In 1891 he married Florence Kling DeWolfe, who helped him make the newspaper a commercial success. Politically, he affiliated with Ohio's Old Guard Republicans and with their support was elected to two terms in the state senate (1900-1904) and one as lieutenant governor (1904-1906). He lost the gubernatorial contest in 1910 but was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914. As senator, he was noted for his affability, party regularity, and skills as a political harmonizer. But he demonstrated few leadership qualities and had no important legislation identified with his name. Most of the scandals besmirching Harding's reputation—the Teapot Dome oil leasing scandals, fraudulent transactions in the Veterans Bureau and Justice Department, and his extramarital affairs involving Nan Britton and Carrie Phillips—came to light only after his death. He had, however, learned enough about the corruption associated with his administration to be deeply worried, and this probably contributed to the stroke that killed him while he was returning from a speaking tour of Alaska.

, twenty-ninth president of the United States . Born near Corsica (now Blooming Grove), Ohio, Harding served as lieutenant governor of the state. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914, he became the compromise candidate of leaders of the Republican party for the presidential nomination in 1920. Campaigning on a slogan of "Back to Normalcy," he was elected in the largest landslide up to that time by a war-weary country. Although Harding appointed a number of able men to high office, he sometimes chose badly. Corruption involving cabinet appointees Albert Fall and Harry Daugherty, as well as the Teapot Dome Scandal , plagued his administration. Harding, while returning from a speaking tour of Alaska to revive confidence in his administration, died of a stroke in San Francisco on August 2, 1923. During Harding's brief time in office, Congress placed quotas on immigration, and the Washington Naval Disarmament Conference met

Warren G. Harding, one of America's Greatest Presidents by Murrell Selden
My grandmother, who was Edna Mae Harding, was a geneologist. She wrote Selden and Kindred of Virginia, an in depth book about the Selden Family. But, she never wrote a single thing about the Harding family. I always figured it was that (since she came from PA near OH) that it was because she was ashamed of being related to Warren G. Harding, former President of the USA. I cannot imagine what the relationship would be exactly.
Warren G. Harding (1865-1923)
Recently, a TV program (on cable) featured Warren G. Harding. I was surprised to find that three scandals occurred in his Presidency. But, historians said that he was not directly responsible for any of them. True, his Dept. of Interior appointee, had sold illegally, interests to Sinclair Oil. But, they said, about "Teapot Dome" that Harding had died and never knew anything about it. He was really not responsible at all. He was not responsible for the two other minor scandals either, though his people were involved. After learning more about Harding, I think my grandmother had nothing to be ashamed of at all. I now believe Harding was one of America's greatest presidents.

Harding addressed the American people in 1921 in giving his inauguration speech. President Warren G Harding
4 March 1921
My Countrymen: When one surveys the world about him after the great storm, noting the marks of destruction and yet rejoicing in the ruggedness of the things which withstood it, if he is an American he breathes the clarified atmosphere with a strange mingling of regret and new hope. We have seen a world passion spend its fury, but we contemplate our Republic unshaken, and hold our civilization secure. Liberty - liberty within the law - and civilization are inseparable, and though both were threatened we find them now secure; and there comes to Americans the profound assurance that our representative government is the highest expression and surest guaranty of both.

WARREN HARDING U.S. President One can almost feel sorry for Harding, who consistently gets ranked as one of the worst presidents of all time. A former newspaperman and senator from Ohio, Harding was ill-suited to the presidency but was chosen as a compromise candidate on the 10th ballot of the 1920 Republican convention. He was inaugurated in 1921 and took over the White House from two-term Democrat Woodrow Wilson . Harding's administration is chiefly remembered for the Teapot Dome scandal, a messy tale of bribery, fraud, and federal oil reserves. Harding died suddenly in San Francisco during a 1923 cross-country tour and was succeeded by his vice president, Calvin Coolidge

American President Warren G. Harding, 1865-1923
America's 29th President, Warren G. Harding entered the White House with the greatest majority vote ever achieved at the time, but died mysteriously during his third year of office, surrounded by scandal. Openly known to have secured the Republican nomination for his deportment more than his politics, Warren G. Harding died August 2nd, 1923 of unspecified causes. The oldest of 8 children, Warren Gamaliel Harding was born on November 2nd, 1865 to George and Phoebe Harding in Blooming Grove , Ohio. George Harding abandoned farming early in Warren's childhood to become a self-appointed physician, enabling his eldest son to attend Ohio Central College. An unimpressive student, Warren Harding left the university in his third year and experimented with a number of professions until his father helped him purchase the Marion Star, a weekly newspaper facing foreclosure in their adopted hometown of Marion in 1884. Though inexperienced in journalism and business, Harding kept the paper afloat, largely through the push of his own personality. Welcomed as a newspaper owner and editor into the Marion social and fraternal societies, Warren G. Harding picked up support through his many connections, which included poker playing clubs as often as upright civic organizations. Harding's active social life led to an introduction to

Warren G. Harding
US President - 1921-23 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Before his nomination, Warren G. Harding declared, "America's present need is not heroics, but healing; not nostrums, but normalcy; not revolution, but restoration; not agitation, but adjustment; not surgery, but serenity; not the dramatic, but the dispassionate; not experiment, but equipoise; not submergence in internationality, but sustainment in triumphant nationality...." A Democratic leader, William Gibbs McAdoo, called Harding's speeches "an army of pompous phrases moving across the landscape in search of an idea." Their very murkiness was effective, since Harding's pronouncements remained unclear on the League of Nations, in contrast to the impassioned crusade of the Democratic candidates, Governor James M. Cox of Ohio and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Thirty-one distinguished Republicans had signed a manifesto assuring voters that a vote for Harding was a vote for the League. But Harding interpreted his election as a mandate to stay out of the League of Nations.

I was recently contacted by a chess player I know from the fourth grade (I was a scholastic player before they had scholastic players) and he wrote me a letter about Warren G. Harding, whom he believes may be a close relative. Warren G. Harding died on August 2, 1923 at age 58 inside the Palace Hotel on Market Street in San Francisco, which is now known as the Sheraton Palace Hotel. At the moment that Harding died, the Western Chess Championship, now known as the US Open Chess Championship, was being played across the street at the Mechanics Institute.

You were a good man, Warren Harding!

I discovered this fact when I was in the San Francisco Public Library looking through 1923 editions of the San Francisco Call, the leading newspaper in San Francisco at the time, looking for games and results in the Western Chess Championship being played, when the newspapers blared out that Harding had died. The co-winner of the chess tournament was Norman T. Whitaker

WARREN G. HARDING
Warren G. Harding Harding was born in 1865 on a farm at Corsica (Blooming Grove Township), a rural town in north-central Ohio, the region that was to be his home until he entered national politics. Five years later, the family moved to Caledonia. There, Warren's father, who had been a teacher as well as a farmer, practiced homeopathic medicine. The youth, who was the eldest of eight children, attended public schools. His employment included work as a printer's devil for the Argus.
Florence Harding Harding won his B.S. degree from Ohio Central College at Iberia (1879-82). During these years, besides holding temporary jobs, he edited the school newspaper and yearbook, played in the band, and participated in debates. In 1882 his parents moved to Marion, where he soon joined them. He taught one term at a rural school, briefly studied law, sold insurance, and then went to work as a reporter and general assistant at the weekly Democratic Mirror. In 1884 he and two partners purchased for $300 the Star
