HANUKAH
The Family Guide to Spiritual Celebration, 2nd Edition
By Ron Wolfson.
Edited by Joel Lurie Gishaver.
192 pages. Jewish Lights. $18.95.
Must Hanukkah always be in competition with Christmas as the perennial "other winter holiday" on the American calendar? One might get that initial impression when reading the first pages of Ron Wolfson's Hanukah: The Family Guide to Spiritual Celebration . The book opens up with an essay on Christmas-envy and the author's boyhood memories in Nebraska halashing (Yiddish for pining for or envying) Christmas lights and celebrations. My childhood memories growing up in the East Bay of San Francisco are similar ( sans snow), and as a Jewish educator I heard about this dilemma a lot. Parents would often say to me, "How can I make Hanukkah as exciting as Christmas?" And my answer to them was, "Don't. This is not a competition. But if you really want to head-off Christmas-envy, make a really big deal about Sukkot." That said, Hanukkah is a holiday rich with opportunity. Its rituals and its lore give it many possibilities for meaning: this is a holiday of how the few stood up to the many, about the freedom to practice one's own religion. It is a holiday about miracles, a holiday about light, a holiday about God.

Will Your Hanukkah Survive the Christmas Frenzy?
    Dr. Susan Linn
    Separating Hanukkah from Christmas
Raising a non-Christian child in a predominantly Christian country is a constant challenge. But around Christmas, life can get particularly complicated. Because Hanukkah falls so close to Christmas, it's tempting for Jewish parents to try to turn it into a similar holiday experience. But this can send a confusing message to kids. From Frosty to Santa, the secular symbols of Christmas and the magical world they suggest are so enticing for children that no matter how hard parents try to twist Hanukkah into a "Jewish Christmas," it comes off as a pale and not very satisfying substitute. What's a parent to do?
Hanukkah is a joyous and meaningful holiday that doesn't need wrapping in Christmas tinsel. But it's not easy for Jewish parents to find effective ways to cope with the secular hoopla that surrounds Christmas. It is very much a part of American life and few children, even non-Christian children, are immune to its lure. Here are some tips and ideas to help you and your family navigate the commercialism and have a meaningful Hanukkah.

Balancing the 3Rs and the Bible
by Robin Sampson T If you ask a homeschooler about balancing subjects, many without realizing it, would look at the situation as assigning weights by periods of time something like the image above: Bible on one side with academics on the other. We begin mentally scheduling how much time should be spent in each "subject." Using this analogy how much weight should the 3Rs get? How much weight should the Bible get? Who decided on the time period of one hour subjects? And who decided that all children learn in the same way with the same exposure? Who decided all subjects should be taught one hour a day? If the Bible is a one hour study time should 3Rs be 3 more hours? Would it be the same for a four year old and a 17 year old? The problem with this mentality is we usually think about the states requirements concerning education instead of God's requirements. We are putting the wrong items on the scales! It should NOT be Bible on one side and 3Rs on the other. They are not in competition with each other. The 3Rs are the tools to help you reach the goal. Our GoalGod's will should be on one side and everything we can get our hands on to prepare our children to balance the scales.

    Beit Hillel ruled:

The sages of the Talmud offer a reason for this dispute: "Beit Shammai decided their rule according to the decreasing number of sacrifices offered at the Temple each day of Sukkot Sukkot is the biblical model for the holiday of H anukkah ) and Beit Hillel decided their rule according to the adage, 'one increases things of holiness, and does not decrease them'." Our practice today is to follow the custom of the school of Hillel. Kavannah

Hanukkah: Oil for Light or Oil for Profit?
By Arthur Waskow The likelihood is growing that US oil and gasoline prices are going to be very painful this winter. (For the most recent information, see p. 1, NYTimes, 9/11/00.) (a) those who heat their homes with oil (but natural-gas prices are also climbing in synch); (b) those who depend on autos for transportation and business; and (c) those who will be affected as businesses have to pay higher fuel costs and either raise prices or clamp down on workers, to protect their profits. They will also raise serious environmental-policy questions, in more subtle ways. So Hanukkah time (first candle: evening of Thursday, Dec 21; Sunday, the third day of Hanukkah, is Dec 24) may be a perfect time for Jewish environmental and social-justice activists to raise major questions about the Global Gobble of Big Oil and other global corporations. Hanukkah for grown-Ups and for everyone
    Rabbi Arthur Waskow , 11/24/2004
Dear Friends, The spiritual and political meaning of Hanukkah is so profound that although its teachings come in a uniquely Jewish form and metaphor, I would welcome everyone who is committed to peace, justice, and the healing of the earth to try the spiritual discipline of the candle-lighting described below. Hanukkah begins the night of Tuesday, December 7, with the lighting of one candle that is considered not to count - it is lit in order to light the other candles - and then by the lighting of one single candle for the first night, as there will be two on the second night, and on so on up to eight. On the sixth night, December 12, The Shalom Center will celebrate in New York with an outpouring of light, song, and teaching from Ruth Messinger and Sy Hersh and Peter Yarrow about how to bring new light into the world in these dark times. See the lead story on our Website for details and for arranging to come. Sometimes we treat Hanukkah as a holiday for kids. But it has profound spiritual significance - celebrating the reemergence of light in a time of darkness, of freedom in a time of tyranny, of hope and rededication in a time of despair.

Hanukkah is the Jewish holiday that is celebrated around the same time as the Christian holiday of Christmas. A Shamash, or helper candle, is used to light each candle on the Menorah to celebrate the freedom to worship their one God instead of the Greek gods they were made to more than 2000 years ago. This book illustrates the customs of Hanukkah in a way that's easy for children to understand. The illustrations help the reader see what goes on when a family celebrates this beloved holiday. There are definitions in the back of the book to inform the reader what each of the customary objects are and the story of how Hanukkah came about. There's even a part on the definitions page to help the reader pronounce Hanukkah correctly! This is a great book for any parent who wants to teach their children what Hanukkah is and how it is celebrated. The illustrations are full-page captions of the family participating in the celebration of Hanukkah. I definitely recommend this book for younger kids as a great bedtime story.

"Tis the Season for Legal Questions
Each year, beginning about this time, we get several questions from teachers along these lines:
    • Can we sing Christmas carols in our school program? Can I have a Christmas tree in my room? What about a nativity scene? What about a menorah? May I teach my students about Kwanzaa?
And so forth. Contrary to what some believe, schools have not been made "religion-free zones" by either legislation or the courts. While public schools may not teach religion, public school students may be taught about religion. The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that many subjects, such as music, literature, history, art and social studies, cannot be taught without discussing the impact of religion. What is not permissible is proselytizing. For example, teaching about the conflict in the Middle East would be impossible without discussing the role of religion. However, you may not use that opportunity to promote one religion as being "right" or preferable. You may discuss the beliefs and teachings of each religion involved, but must give equal time to all and must present the beliefs in an objective fashion.
