August Hantavirus in Iowa Volume 38, No. 2, p. 1-2 Tom Gahan, Immunology Globally hantaviruses have been of public health significance for many years, but only recently were they found in the United States. A cluster of cases was detected during the spring and summer of 1993. The cases were found mostly in Native Americans residing in the Four Corners region of the Southwestern U.S. who had previously been in good health but developed adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The new agent was named the Sin Nombre virus and it is associated with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Currently, 217 cases of HPS have been reported in the United States. HPS is an illness that begins with common flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue and muscle aches and progresses with headache, chills, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Late symptoms include cough and shortness of breath as lungs fill with fluid. Currently, the case fatality rate is approximately 43% for all cases reported. The mean age of confirmed HPS cases is 37 years, with a range of 11 to 69. Sixty percent of cases are male, 40% are female, and 75% of all cases are white, 23% American Indians, and 2% are African American.

These rodents are a nuisance, but they also pose a more serious health risk: the spread of viruses such as the hantaviruses. Hantaviruses consist of several different strains, one of which causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a life-threatening disease marked by flu-like symptoms high fever, severe body aches, chills, troubled breathing and cough which progress rapidly to severe lung disease. There is no known cure or vaccine for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The mortality rate is high for disease in the U.S., about 37% according to recent CDC figures. The illness first made headlines in 1993 when health officials in the southwestern United States investigated a cluster of deaths in young people, identified it as a new disease, and learned that it was caused by hantavirus and transmitted by infected mice. Since then, more than 173 cases of the illness have been identified among humans in 28 states. The first confirmed case of HPS in Iowa occurred last spring and caused the death of a man who resided in a rural area near Alden in Hardin County.
