Introduction
The following is my first cut at a hang glider database. As requested by several readers of the mailing list, it gives manufacturer, years of manufacture, available sizes, minimum recommended rating and related comments. The ratings given are the USHGA versions (1 = Beginner, 2 = Novice, 3 = Intermediate, 4 = Advanced). As prices vary tremendously both regionally and over time, I'm not even attempting an estimate. This list is by no means complete and it is meant to be added to by others until we arrive at a somewhat more definitive database. Initially the comments, manufacture dates and recommended skill levels will mostly reflect my own recollections and opinions. As others contribute to the list, the number of comments will grow and I hope the result will be broad based and reasonably objective. Note: It is my policy to include every comment that contributors to this list choose to make. So these comments range from fairly neutral statements describing gliders that people have seen flying around to somewhat less neutral rave reviews of wings people own (or make) and have fallen in love with. So the reader is advised to take the information found here as a good starting point in comparing gliders, but as with all hang gliding information, always fly before you buy.

This list contains all the same entries as are in the glider list sorted by manufacturer. Here, however, the gliders are sorted according to the type of flight they for which they're designed: Training, Recreational Flying and Competition. Since these categories overlap somewhat, several gliders will show up in more than one category.

Every year tens of thousands of people visit Exmoor. Most come by car. Some simply want to enjoy the beautiful scenery while others come to take advantage of the many opportunities that exist for quiet open air activities. When the National Parks Act was passed in 1949 it was not just to conserve wild areas of magnificent scenery The Government of the time thought that people, especially those living in cities, needed to get away sometimes from their ordinary everyday circumstances. It was thought that spending a day out in the country in the freedom of the open air would benefit people's health and quality of life. Britain in 1949 was still suffering the after effects of World War II. Since then there have been many changes for the better in people's working conditions and in the level of real income earned. Shorter working hours and longer holidays give more opportunities for leisure and for getting away from things. The motor car has become the most popular means of transport and roads improved to take the growing volume of traffic. Some people now travel to Exmoor all through the year from places like Birmingham, Cardiff and London just for a day out, though most visitors (77% in 1994) stay in the area for the traditional week or fortnight's holiday or the two or three day 'short break' which is becoming very popular.

The Columbia River, its headwaters flowing from Columbia Lake, between the Rocky Mountain Range to the east and the Purcell Mountains to the west, has served as a transportation route for human, beast and plant for thousands of years. Seismic and volcanic nature created the Columbia's flow north to Kinbasket Lake, from which it turns south at the 'big bend' near the northern point of the Selkirk Range, then through the Arrow Lakes region. Below the Arrows, it takes on the flow from the Kootenay River.

Soaring enthusiasts come down to earth
Published Friday, February 8, 2002 12:00:00 AM By MATT KRUPNICK STAFF WRITER Conference features sailplanes, hang gliders, ultralights ONTARIO Like migratory birds taking a brief break at ground level, thousands of air-sports enthusiasts began arriving at the Ontario Convention Center on Thursday for the Air Sports Expo. About 60 exhibitors and a variety of hang gliders, sailplanes and ultralight aircraft greeted visitors, which will run through Saturday. Exhibits ranged from parachutes to vintage sailplanes. Participants wandered among the exhibits and 90-foot-wide sailplanes Thursday, meeting old friends and reveling in the aviation-focused atmosphere. ''We have yet to see aviation become what it almost certainly has to become: the ability to take off out of your yard and go to the store,'' said Ken de Russy, a self-described hang-gliding historian from Anacortes, Wash. ''There is a day coming when man will be able to fly much like we now move comfortably over and through the water.'' Among the scheduled speakers were Paul MacCready, creator of the human-powered Gossamer Albatross aircraft that crossed the English Channel, and several accomplished aviators.

Currently, almost 1 in 5 crags in the Sydney region are affected by access issues of one sort or another. The following excerpts are from the relevant NPWS and Council documents. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service National Parks and Wildlife Regulation
    Clause 19, Section 21

Page 29: "(1) A person must not in a park:
    (d) engage in any activity or recreational pursuit that involves risking the safety of the person or the safety of other persons or damaging the environment.
    (2) Without limiting the generality of subclause (1) (d), the activities and recreational pursuits to which that paragraph applies include abseiling, base jumping, bungy jumping, rock climbing, caving, parachuting, white water boating, paragliding, parasailing and hang gliding, but the paragraph will not apply if the activity is permitted in a plan of management for the park."

In other words, climbing without explicit permission from NPWS is not allowed in any National Park in NSW, unless the Park's Plan of Management makes an exception. Parks which currently meet this criteria include Blue Mountains, Kanangra-Boyd, Wollemi and Ku-ring-gai Chase (Barrenjoey only) National Parks.

Hang gliding is a form of aviation that is enjoyed by many around the world as a competitive and recreational sport. The history of hang gliding has origins in the birth of aviation itself.
There are two basic types of hang gliders, rigid wings and flex wings. As the name implies, rigid wing gliders are stiff and offer better aerodynamics than the flex wing glider. Along with the increased aerodynamics is an increase in price. Gliders of this type are classified by the FAI as a class 5 or a class 2. The main difference in class 5 and class 2 glider is that the class 2 glider utilzes a fairing to decrease drag.
Most students learn on flex wings because they offer better flight control and have a predictable landing characteristic. Flex wings are generally less expensive than rigid wings and are more common amongst the recreational pilots. Flex wing hang gliders are classified as class 1 gliders by the FAI.

    Recreation
Chelan has everything for the visitor in search of summer fun. Boating, swimming and fishing are always popular. Hiking opportunities range from the family-friendly to the truly adventurous. Chelan also offers some of the best conditions for hang gliding - now that's adventure! For the more relaxed crowd, take a historical walking tour of downtown Chelan and get a glimpse of the turn-of-the-century West. Find your recreational activity, whatever your speed, and enjoy!
    Boating
More than 60 percent of Lake Chelan's shoreline cannot be reached by car. Visitors eager to take in all of the valley's splendor will require a boat. Canoes and kayaks are fine for short-range excursions, but to really travel the lake, the motorboat is the thing. Part of what makes Lake Chelan so special is its pristine water. To keep Lake Chelan clear and blue, all who enjoy it are asked to take a few simple measures. A good rule of thumb is that nothing in a boat should wind up in the water. Carry a bag to collect your trash, and dispose of it when you return to shore. This applies to sewage as well - bring a port-a-potty or make sure your holding tank is well sealed. Sewage should leave your boat only at a pump-out station. It is especially critical that gas, oil and chemicals be kept out of the water. A single quart of oil can create a two-acre slick. Fuel your boat carefully to avoid overfilling or spilling. Bilge water is not to be pumped into the lake. Boat washing must be done on shore to assure that no chemical cleaners enter the lake. Exhaust systems must meet legal requirements and be in good working order.
