This handwriting-teacher's book/CD-ROM combination for children, teens, and adults - BFH, A MANUAL FOR FLUENT HANDWRITING - appeared July 1997. Order it from Amazon.com's online bookstore or from her site at http://www.BFHhandwriting.com . From Nan's site you can also order her BEGINNERS' HANDWRITING, designed for younger children and others who can benefit from large-scale fluent models and motoric exercises for handwriting development. The large-scale, large motor, "arm's length" exercises in BEGINNERS' HANDWRITING develop a good foundation for later handwriting progress in any style. Nan developed her teaching method during more than 20 years of experience working in elementary school classrooms and also tutoring/remediating older learners. Observing the motor skills of young children enabled Nan to formulate methods that allow children to write at maximum speed with maximum legibility.

Keyboarding and Penmanship
CNN has a story that asks the question, are keyboards killing cursive penmanship? As one whose own handwriting had atrophied to near illegibility over the years my use of computers to write had increased, I do know keyboards can hinder writing by hand to the extent they displace writing by hand. The hand frequently loses its muscle memory and efficiency for writing cursive and print well.
The CNN story is interesting because it focuses on the use of computers in the third grade of a California school, Horrall Elementary School, where kids reportedly prefer writing on the computer than writing by hand.
"Computers are better," the 9-year-old says, blonde pony tail bobbing behind her. "With typing, you don't have to erase when you make a mistake. You just hit delete, so it's a lot easier."

by Bob Brooke Old records were written by hand. Often this "handwriting" or "penmanship," as it was called not too long ago, is indecipherable. Handwriting, as with language, changes over time, so what may have been common practice years ago is no longer used. Not only have our words and their meanings changed throughout the years, the way we form the letters has, too. Old_time script can make a genealogist's head spin. However, chances are that an old document may contain valuable information, so it's worth taking extra time to read it carefully. In order to get the most information from the records that are available, a genealogist has to decipher them and put meaning into the symbols on the old documents. As a genealogist searches old Bible, census, courthouse, archive and Church records to obtain names, places and dates, often the words are unclear. Also, the older the document, the harder it is to read. So where should a researcher begin? Use the known to take you to the unknown. Study the way in which letters were made, especially in obvious words. Legal documents are loaded with terms like "whereas," "wherefore,' and "hence." An ancestor s name is another good place to begin. Make a note of the letters in those words, and try to find them in others. An important note to remember is that much of the writing is "phonetic." Clerks often wrote a name the best that they could by how it sounded.

Schools in America have apportioned more and more content to their daily programs without extending the length of the school day and without eliminating the time spend addressing areas of past concern. In order to deliver the most effective educational program possible, curriculum needs to be examined periodically to eliminate those subjects which have outlived their usefulness. Increased use of communication-related technologies and a renewed emphasis on writing as meaningful communication has made this an appropriate time to reevaluate the teaching of handwriting or penmanship.
The position advanced in this paper is that an emphasis should be placed on teaching a single form of orthography which is flexible enough to be perceived as similar to printed text and simple enough to last through the school years. Two of the manuscript styles discussedD'Nealian and italicsallow for an easy transition to cursive should students, schools, or school districts opt to

Is handwriting facing ink-stinction?
By By KEVIN FRANCHUK - Sun Media
If those delicate curlicues practised under the eye of your grade-school teacher have disappeared in the scrawl of grocery lists and Post-It notes, you're not alone. Few people seemingly would admit to having neat, let alone legible, handwriting today, a penmanship loss bemoaned by some and taken as a cause for others. Angelique Gillespie remembers a time from long past, spending more than an hour a day practising her handwriting in a small school. "We've lost the discipline to write that way any more," said Gillespie, an accomplished Calgary artist and member of the Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild "It's a hurry-up world, and I think the computer has taken away the craft of writing." Fonts have generally replaced fountain pens, agreed fellow calligrapher Margaret Van Diest. "If you look at people aged 60-plus, their handwriting is generally good," she said. "I think the young generation never had that packed into them." Maybe penmanship has gone to hell in a handwritten note. But Kate Gladstone, the self-described "handwriting repairwoman" from Albany, N.Y., is determined to do something about it.
