Penmanship is the art of writing clearly and quickly. Different styles of writing have been popular at different times and in different countries. The publication of The Spencerian Key to Practical Penmanship by Platt Rogers Spencer in introduced Business writing to North America. This " Spencerian Method " was taught in schools until the about the mid-20th century. Starting at the beginning of the 20th century, Zaner-Blosser Script and the Palmer Method , introduced by Charles Paxton Zaner (15 February 1864 - 1 December 1918) and Elmar Ward Bloser (6 November 1865 - 1929) of the Zanerian Business College and A. Starting in the early sixties, D'Nealian Script and Getty-Dubay become the dominant copybook taught in North America.
History
At different times of Europe's history the quality of penmanship has varied considerably. Ancient Roman handwriting styles included Roman cursive , and the more calligraphic rustic capitals and square capitals , the latter of which forms the basis for modern capital letters and was used in stone inscriptions. Writing implements and materials were easy to come by. With the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the

'Handwriting challenged' doctors to take penmanship class at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Physicians are notorious for bad handwriting. Reading some doctors' prescription orders has been likened to deciphering hieroglyphics or interpreting the Rosetta Stone. But though society once made light of their indiscernible scratches and scrawls, doctors' bad handwriting is no longer a laughing matter. According to Paul B. Hackmeyer, MD, Chief of the Medical Staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, poor handwriting can be dangerous if not deadly. "Bad handwriting can lead to dramatic medication errors," explained Dr. Hackmeyer, "while clear, easy-to-read handwriting can help protect patients from the consequences of taking the wrong medicine. On Tuesday, May 9, we are offering a special class in handwriting for members of our medical staff. Though Cedars-Sinai medical staff consistently rates high in customer satisfaction, we realize that many of our physicians don't write legibly and we wanted to take the initiative and address this concern." Dr. Hackmeyer said that the medical staff decided to offer this class in response to recent national studies, like that of the Institute of Medicine, which highlight the need to reduce medical errors. He cited a widely publicized 1999 case in Texas where a jury awarded a woman $450,000 because her husband died from taking the wrong medication. "Because of the doctor's poor penmanship, the pharmacist mistakenly gave him a different medication," said Hackmeyer. "This tragic situation is certainly a cautionary tale for everyone in the medical profession."

Some teachers say increased use of computers has weakened students' handwriting. Staff Photos by Harry Lynch By PATRICK WINN, Staff Writer Behind blackboards and slide rules, another school staple seems bound for education's catacombs. Many teachers say cursive, not to mention polished handwriting altogether, is poised for extinction. They blame keyboards and a fading emphasis on penmanship for its doom. "I finally decided that no matter how red in the face I got, it wasn't getting any better," said David Bruton, a veteran teacher at Chapel Hill High School. "So I might as well not have a stroke." For the e-mail generation, homework sounds more like fingers clacking on a keyboard than pencils scratching across paper. In Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, every active classroom has at least one Internet-ready computer. And after school, many middle and high school students go home to hours of online instant messaging.

Penmanship Inc. Announces KidPad
New display digitizer with multimedia courseware revolutionizes handwriting instruction
Mountain View, CA January 22, 1997 Penmanship Inc. today announced it's first product, KidPad™ a dramatic new way to teach handwriting to children. Using interactive animation and leading-edge digitizing tablet technology, KidPad helps students learn and practice handwriting while receiving instructions and feedback from Dexter Dog, a friendly, animated guide. The product includes the KidPad display tablet, a unique pressure-sensitive KidPen™ designed for kids, and the proprietary KidWrite™ courseware. The KidPad system is effective in both a classroom setting acting as a teacher’s aid and at home for parents actively encouraging their children to learn handwriting correctly and easily.
"The KidPad provides at least a 10 to 1 productivity gain in teaching handwriting," said Chip Gierhart, president and founder of Penmanship. "It doesn’t just evaluate final written words, but provides valuable, real-time measurement and feedback to the student, parent, and teacher on the process of learning to write. With KidPad, students, parents, and teachers can more effectively address the specific challenge each individual student may face in the daunting effort of learning to write words."
The KidWrite Curriculum Software
KidWrite software uses a familiar school metaphor which allows students to enter any of four "school rooms", each with its own focus. The four school room choices are Class, Practice, Games, and Art.

Jittery handwriting is all too familiar to families and friends of people with severe Parkinson's disease. The involuntary tremor of Parkinson's can sometimes make handwriting almost illegible. But what if a computer could transform wobbly handwriting into penmanship that even a grammar school teacher would approve of? Hopkins biomedical engineers have created software that does just that. Users of the system write on a digitizing tablet, and a wave form version of the handwriting is fed into a computer. A software program then measures the characteristic frequency of the user's tremor. While tremor frequency varies from one person to the next, each person with Parkinson's disease shakes at a relatively constant frequency. The program then subtracts the tremor frequency, in effect cleaning up the handwriting. Parkinson's disease patients are not the only ones who might benefit from the technology. Brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and even the natural aging process can lead to pathological tremor, notes

Will the Computer and the Calculator do our Thinking for us?
No Way?
Welcome to our Expanded Thinking Priorities
Mrs. Bodden's phone call was on our help line. Her voice was filled with pride as she described her seven-year old son's accomplishments in the short time since the reading system had arrived - that was until she described Jason's handwriting. "His penmanship is terrible. We can barely read it!" Now her voice expressed deep concern. "They told us that he has impaired fine motor development, and cognitive processing problems."
My voice tried to express understanding. "You had him tested?"
"Yes. That was before we got your books. We agreed to let the school test him even after we decided to home school Jason. We wanted to make sure that everything was all right, that maybe we should do things differently. We didn't really expect that anything was wrong: in spite of what the school had told us. He always seemed like such a bright little boy. But now I can't help wondering..."
Jason is indeed a bright youngster. At age seven he is writing little stories on the computer, and illustrating the computer printouts with amusing, but not so great line drawings. He has shared "his books" with neighborhood pals who thoroughly enjoyed his creations. So what is Jason's problem?

Up Hand Washing by Health Care Providers [ Bad Penmanship can lead to Medical Errors ] For Doctors’ Scrawl, Handwriting’s on the Wall Healthcare providers’ compliance behavior is revealed by this headline from another newspaper article, by Rene Sanchez ( Washington Post , May 16, 2000). Folklore has it that physicians’ handwriting is notoriously bad, and with the increased importance of prescription medicines in treating diseases of every sort, poor penmanship increases the probability of fatal medication errors. Even more than handwashing, prescription errors show how adverse medical outcomes can reflect not just the misbehavior of an individual, but rather the complexity of the entire healthcare system. An analysis by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) shows how complex the system actually is. First, the physician has to write or otherwise order the prescription. Then, the prescription must be routed to the pharmacist, who reviews the order and then dispenses the prescription. Finally, the prescription has to be administered, by either the patient or a caregiver.

According to a recent New York Times article, many workers at business meetings, in hospitals and in other job settings would rather write than type on a laptop. Or, to be more precise, they would rather scribble on a notepad and have their jottings appear transformed into print on computer screens. For these people, handwriting-recognition software, which translates handwritten notes into computer text files that can be edited, revised and printed, is being developed.
