English Language Arts and Reading

What do the TEKS say about handwriting? The TEKS standard for penmanship in Grades 4-8 requires that students write legibly by selecting cursive or manuscript as appropriate. Thus, it is assumed that students have learned cursive handwriting by the time they enter Grade 4. Districts/charters have local decision making authority when determining whether or how the handwriting instruction will be provided after Grade 3. *Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills K.14 (E), 1.17 (E), 2.15 (A), 3.15 (A)

A forgotten art: Penmanship Educators say it's a skill still needed Anne Ryman
The Arizona Republic
Jul. 24, 2005 12:00 AM In an age of e-mail and text messaging, handwriting gets little attention.
But educators say it is an important skill that children need for academic reasons such as essay-writing on standardized tests, and for living their day-to-day lives long after school days are over.
"And people need to be able to read it," Anasazi Elementary Principal Jeff Quisberg said. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
His Scottsdale school has found a new way to emphasize the importance of handwriting.
The school's parent-teacher group brings in a retired teacher to work with students on penmanship. Nicknamed the Cursive Queen by one class, Marilyn Harrer spends 10 to 20 minutes in classrooms and shows children how to hold a pencil, slant the paper and keep the elbow close to the body when they write. Harrer, who began tutoring kids in math at the school after she retired in 1997, noticed that kindergartners didn't know how to hold their pencils. So she started to work with the kindergarten teachers and went into the classes once a week. This past school year, she also worked with third-graders on their switch to cursive writing.

Handwriting Contest(s)
You might be surprised to find out how many handwriting contests there are around the world. One of them, sponsored by the Memphis Calligraphy Guild , has a handwriting contest deadline for this Wednesday (you'd probably have to mail your entry in by Monday, December 13, 2004). It isn't a calligraphy contest. It's a handwriting contest. There aren't many entries. Could it be that handwriting (penmanship) is becoming a lost art? The Memphis contest features two citations which are to be copied by hand if one wants to enter. I thought the quotes themselves were worth posting. Here thay are: Quote #1 (Ages 12 and Under Only) "Letters, these seemingly commonplace little signs, taken for granted by so many, belong to the most momentous products of creative power. These forms, which we take in with our eyes a million times each day, embody the highest skill within their small compass. They are abstract refinements of the creative imagination, full of clarity, movement and subtlety. They combine two characteristics which must be inseparable: the precision of mathematical laws and the expressiveness of the animated stroke." Gustav Bartel
Quote #2 (Ages 13 and older) "Handwriting: That action of emotion, of thought, and of decision that has recorded the history of mankind, revealed the genius of invention, and disclosed the inmost depths of the soulful heart. It gives ideas tangible form through written letters, pictographs, symbols, and signs. Handwriting forms a bond across millennia and generations that not only ties us to the thoughts and deeds of our forebears but also serves as an irrevocable link to our humanity. Neither machines nor technology can replace the contributions or continuing importance of this inexpensive portable skill. Necessary in every age, handwriting remains just as vital to the enduring saga of civilization as our next breath." Michael R. Sull

Teacher Carol Buese is demonstrating how to form a lower-case "y" in D'Nealian, a hybrid of traditional printing and cursive handwriting. "It almost looks like a fish hook under the water," she explains as she slants the letter down to the left and curls it. She instructs them to write five upper-case "Y"s and five lower-case "y"s, then the sentence "Was yesterday rainy?"

Don't be, test administrators say. Administrators point out they have years of experience scoring other tests with essays, like the SAT IIs and Advanced Placement exams. They've also drilled scorers not to penalize bad penmanship (a few spelling and grammar errors also won't count).

Answers first / Self correction Stop asking questions you haven't given the answers to first. Math anxiety, reading anxiety, spelling anxiety, handwriting anxiety, neatness anxiety, writing anxiety and speaking anxiety are such real and devastating problems that you are going to have to create environments where your children are set up to succeed at these tasks. They will learn much more by being provided with the answers first, and being allowed to self-correct, than they ever will by being found wrong or sloppy one more time. Allow them the time necessary for self-correction. Often, out of our own fear of failure, we rush in to correct mistakes. Rushing in too quickly destroys the opportunity for self-correction, and self-correction is far more valuable than correction by others. Children, and adults, are sick and tired of being found wrong - so sick and tired, that in many cases they have given up and will no longer even try. The first thing they need is the trust that

Starting this month, the test includes a handwritten essay. This addition will even affect your elementary- or middle-school students, since penmanship will take on added importance in the classroom. Some teachers are concerned that an emphasis on computers has left many children with illegible handwriting. Yet penmanship is alive and well, according to Richard Northup of the educational publisher Zaner-Bloser. Its annual handwriting contest saw a 30 percent rise in entries last year, to 130,000. The formula is quite simple: As your attitude toward life and yourself changes, your handwriting patterns change. As your handwriting patterns change, your attitude toward life and yourself changes. The premise is simple; the premise is powerful. It works. The subconscious mind not only defines who you see yourself to be, it also reinforces that image with every stroke of the pen. As you train yourself to write with positive, self-affirming strokes, you are retraining the subconscious mind and reshaping your self-image. This is not about handwriting analysis or penmanship per se . At the Institute of Integral Handwriting Studies we share technology that guides the writer of any age in bringing out the very best in themselves, and building a solid sense of self-worth through altering specific handwriting patterns. Students shirk cursive as keyboard rules in third grade
Nabeel Khaliq, 11, is a champion in cursive writing and types 40 words a minute. Story Tools SAN MATEO, California (AP) Monique McGowan sharpens a No. 2 pencil, straightens her posture and sharply slants her notebook to prepare for her weekly lesson in cursive. She and other third graders at Horrall Elementary School have perfected ascenders and descenders, and their letters' tails and legs hit the appropriate base lines even the tricky capitals G, Q and S. But Monique, who plays games on her dad's laptop at home, says she'd rather punch a keyboard than write cursive. "Computers are better," the 9-year-old says, blonde pony tail bobbing behind her. "With typing, you don't have to erase when you make a mistake. You just hit delete, so it's a lot easier." Such attitudes are worrying to a growing number of parents, educators and historians, who fear that computers are speeding the demise of a uniquely American form of expression. Handwriting experts fear that the wild popularity of e-mail, instant messages and other electronic communication, particularly among kids, could erase cursive within a few decades. At technology-savvy Horrall Elementary where students take keyboard lessons in third grade, precisely when they learn cursive Monique's teacher, Ed Boell, is fighting the trend. He refuses to give extra points when students turn in laser-printed homework assignments with fancy computer fonts, and he urges kids to send handwritten letters to parents and friends.
