America's Golden Age of Penmanship (1850-1925) produced the most graceful forms of handwriting ever developed by Western civilization.
Sull's Handwriting System will soon be available for learning these beautiful penmanship styles through a host of educational materials and products, including a thorough course of study for children in grades One and higher. The curriculum is especially designed to be flexible; while sections of the course are recommended for specific grade levels, older students and adults can enter the program at levels that are applicable for their own abilities. The course begins with comprensive instruction in Amercan Cursive Handwriting and progresses into Spencerian Script Penmanship
In addition, students can learn
the rich heritage of this unique period in American history by studying the legacies of the penmen who were instrumental in creating these vintage handwriting styles.
For more details regarding the launch of Sull's Handwriting System and homeschool conventions we will be participating in, please e-mail Michael or Deb

Mike Wendland: Bad handwriting trend blamed on computer use
March 15, 2001 I've never been good at penmanship. But since I started using computers, my handwriting has become so bad that even I can't make it out. I can type, using the two-fingered self-taught hunt-and-peck method, at a pretty amazing speed. I can tap out letters and numbers on my Palm handheld accurately enough to dazzle onlookers. But I often can't read my own handwriting. You, too? In my case, I'm convinced the computer is the culprit. What was never very legible in the first place has become worse during the past several years as I've become digitally dependent. "Every year, 10 million letters end up undeliverable, in the dead letter boxes at post offices," says Bill Bostick, a Bingham Farms handwriting expert. "The reason is that nobody can read the penmanship on the envelopes. Have you wondered why every form you're asked to fill out says to print the information? It's because our handwriting is so abominable." All this greatly saddens the 88-year-old Bostick. He is so skilled at writing beautifully hand-crafted flowing letters in a classic Italian Renaissance style called Chancery that he has taught penmanship and calligraphy for nearly four decades.

Book 6, Handwriting Exercise ISBN 0-9688493-7-7 A most interesting way to learn legible adult style handwriting at a young age. The practice page begins with an alphabet of 3/16" size capital letters (which is 3/4's of a line) which the student handwrites onto a business card-style box. The student continues with a Bible verse in the following boxes. Completing a box looks quite attainable in one sitting taking less than 10 minutes. One is encouraged to decorate each box with a border pattern as it also promotes muscle control and perseverence while developing aestetics and good taste. The student should be encouraged to continue to maintain and develop the penmanship skills by using Book 7 and Book 8. The discipline of tidy handwriting is better kept up with a little regular handwriting practice.

Penmanship: A Dying Art?
SAN MATEO, Calif., June 9, 2003
Third grade teacher Ed Boell (that's his hand) guides his students through traditional penmanship, including pointers on the pluses of handwriting compared to letters produced by keyboards. (Photo: AP)
In many classrooms, traditional cursive script is on its way out. So many students have trouble with it that teachers are increasingly adopting a simpler style known as Italic or "print cursive."
(AP)
Monique McGowan sharpens a No. 2 pencil, straightens her posture and sharply slants her notebook to prepare for her weekly lesson in cursive.
She and other third graders at Horrall Elementary School have perfected ascenders and descenders, and their letters' tails and legs hit the appropriate base lines - even the tricky capitals G, Q and S.
But Monique, who plays games on her dad's laptop at home, says she'd rather punch a keyboard than write cursive.
"Computers are better," the 9-year-old says, blonde pony tail bobbing behind her. "With typing, you don't have to erase when you make a mistake. You just hit delete, so it's a lot easier."

PENMANSHIP PART 2:
Penmanship's Storied Past and the Technological Roots of Its Revival
By Karl Barksdale Long before the click and clack of the typewriter, before the tip and tap of the keyboard, the scratch of pen and ink on paper echoed through the corridors of every business. Then as now, educators were assigned the task of preparing students for the business world. Today, however, business educators are discussing the appalling lack of cursive. Some students can't write it and others can't read it. And it's not just an elementary-secondary school problem. Even some college teachers are concerned about the ability of some students to read and write cursive. It's time for business educators to lead a cursive revival. To make this revival happen, we should explore the business education roots of penmanship and the technological roots of its revival. A BUSINESS HISTORY OF PENMANSHIP IN AMERICA
In the 1800s, penmanship was serious business. There were many colleges of penmanship. One very influential school was founded by Charles Paxton Zaner and his eminent partner in pen education, Elmer Ward Bloser. Their school, the Zanerian College of Penmanship, was located in Columbus, Ohio. Zaner and Bloser and the college became legendary as they prepared students in the essential penmanship skills required for the world of work. They also ran a demanding teacher education penmanship program. Graduates had to prove themselves by completing a 10,000 word thesis that the conclusion of their coursework.

Handwriting in America: A Cultural History
Book review, by Dyas A. Lawson Handwriting improvement Joy of flex, I Joy of flex, II Calligraphy tips ... Handwriting history The cover on this penmanship book from the late 1800s is as ornate as the instructions contained inside it. Note the upper right hand corner it specifies that this version is intended for boys, indicating that boys learned a different handwriting style from the one girls were taught. Handwriting in America: A Cultural History isn't a new book by any means. Published in hardback in 1996, it's been around for a bit; you can get it in paperback or at used-book stores. But it's one of those books that has stayed in my mind as interesting, enlightening, informative, and just plain fun. Handwriting in America: A Cultural History If you read this book (which reads much like and may be a thesis, with numerous quotes from a huge range of sources), prepare to have just about everything you ever believed about handwriting turned upside down. In the foreword, author Tamara Plakins Thornton shows us the seeds of the intellectual journey that resulted in this book: "Foremost among (my attitudes) toward handwriting was my secret conviction that good penmanship does not matter, that if anything it denotes a person who is fearful or incapable of being in any way unusual. Of course, what lies behind that conviction is the belief that handwriting in some way reflects personality, most especially those qualities that differentiate one person from everyone else. Faithful imitation of penmanship models what teachers would call good handwriting thereby signals conformity and ordinariness, while breaking all the penmanship rules, even to the point of illegibility, is a mark of individuality."
