Mice, Rats, Gerbills and Hamsters. These little sweeties are often chosen as pets for the first time animal guardian because they are relatively low maintenace and have gentle dispositions. Nutrition Commercial rodent pellets are available for Gerbils and Hamsters at pet stores. All four creatures have similar diets so if you have a rat, gerbil pellets are fine. For a more palatable diet, supplement the pellets with diced fruit and seeds, but don’t overdo it. These little guys have habit of filling up on the yummy stuff and ignoring the pellets, and eating that way will not satisfy their daily nutritional needs. Housing As the popularity of keeping small animals increases, more and more cages designed for them are appearing in pet stores all over. But, I recommend a glass aquarium with a screen cover. Ferrets - More like a cat than a rodent when it comes to care and maintenance. Rabbits - A hunny bunny can be a great pet if some basic needs are met.

Hamster care
hamster care is choosing the right housing. This means finding a cage that is easy to take apart, easy to clean, well ventilated and secure. Also, we all know hamsters store food in their pouches, but hamster care means recognising when permanently stuffed cheeks are caused by impacted food. Always seek the advice of a vet in this situation.

Syrian Hamster Scientific name: Mesocricetus auratus
Size: Six inches long
Color: Usually golden, but they can also have patches and bands and blobs of white, yellow, orange or gray.
Lifespan: Two to three years
The most common pet hamster is the Syrian hamster. If you have one of these hammies, he's a descendant of the first hamsters captured from the wild in 1930. Syrians are sometimes called golden hamsters, because of their honey-colored fur, which can be long or short, silky or fluffy. Syrian hamsters like to live alone and prefer their own turf. If you put two in one cage, very soon they will begin to chatter their teeth at each other and start to fight. Battles can be fierce!
Dwarf Campbell's Russian Hamster Scientific name: Phodopus campbelli
Size: Three inches long
Color: Gray
Lifespan: One to two years
This little guy is the most common dwarf hamster available in pet stores. Dwarf hamsters look pleasantly plump and like to live in pairsbut you must introduce them when they're young. As a rule, don't put a new hammy in with a group who've been living together, or with an adult who's used to living alone. Another dwarf species is the Winter White Russian hamster (Phodopus sungorus), also known as the Siberian hamster. He's gray, but sometimes turns completely snowy white during the winter. Roborovsky's hamster (Phodopus roborovski) is the smallest dwarf hamster kept as a pet. This little guy is about two inches long but can live three to four years. Even smaller is the Chinese hamster, who's about the size of a mouse.

There are lots of hamster houses to choose from. A wire cage with a plastic bottom doubles as a jungle gym for your pet to climb on. Plus, it's easy to clean the plastic. Make sure the wire is small enough to prevent your hamster from escaping. You can keep dwarf hamsters in a cage made for mice. A ten-gallon aquarium with a wire cover makes a cozy home for hamsters of all kinds. The fancier cages with tubes, tunnels and hideaways are good, too, but they usually cost more and are harder to clean. And dwarf hamsters may have trouble climbing up and down the tubes. Help your little guys out by putting a special hamster ladderalso known as a thin tree branch!in the tube for them to climb. Hamster home decor
Now comes the fun partdecorating your new pet's home. You don't have to break out the miniature coffee table or chintz curtains, but there are some things you can do to make your hamster's home his castle. Fill the bottom of the cage with bedding so your pet can engage in the all-time favorite hamster sports of digging and tunneling. Use aspen or hardwood shavings, or recycled paper pellets available at pet supply stores. DO NOT use cedar or pine shavings, because they can make your hamster sick. All hamsters need a cave for sleeping and resting. You can use a small flower pot or a wooden box with an entrance holeor buy one from a pet supply store.

Caring For Your Hamster
Hamsters are very popular small pets and they thrive on a little attention. They are ideal pets if you are not at home very much during the day as they are predominately nocturnal animals. They have a life span of 3-5 years. Here are some tips to help you care for your hamster Where will your hamster live ? You will need a reasonably sized wire cage to allow your hamster to get some exercise. There are many types of special hamster cages around that contain wheels or runs for the hamster. Alpine Pet Shop will be pleased to help you choose the right cage. You will also need some sawdust or fine wood shavings to put on the floor of the cage and a soft bedding material to provide somewhere for the hamster to sleep. DO NOT use man-made fibres or course hay or straw. The cage must be sited away from drafts and out of the reach of other pets. Avoid placing the hamster in a draft or in a cold environment. Ideally the hamster should be kept in an area that is fairly warm and not exposed to sudden changes in temperature. If possible each hamster should have their own cage and should NEVER be mixed with other rodents.

We all want our beloved rodents to be happy and healthy. This means paying the vet hundreds of dollars for exams, right? No! Ask any vet the care your rodent gets at home has far more effect on his health than any vet exam. In fact, most vets give out advice along with prescriptions advice that could have prevented the illness in the first place! Wouldn't you like to have that advice now, before you have to hear it from your vet? Rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs all have different needs. For instance, guinea pigs cannot metabolize vitamin C on their own, so you must provide it in their diet every day, or they can develop serious, and even fatal, health problems. Rats and mice don't have this problem, however. Understanding your rodent's diet needs is easy, will keep him healthier and happier, and can prevent expensive treatments in the future. Note: we are not saying you will never have to visit the vet again! Vet care is important to your pet's health. However, with the care techniques in this book, you can prevent a multitude of costly illnesses with just a little knowledge!

Your Pet Hamster
Remember
The hamster is attractive, funny, active, lively, clean and easy to care for; lives alone, so no problems with finding other hamsters to live with or breeding. However, Hamsters are active at night, i.e. nocturnal, and need to be left alone and quiet during the day. Taming takes time and patience - they may bite at first. If the temperature gets too cold, they may go asleep (hibernation)
A hamsters needs
- To live on its own - A mixed diet of seed, grains, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables - Hard wood to gnaw on - To have a constant supply of fresh drinking water from a drip-feed bottle with a metal spout - A large cage - at least 75 x 40 x 40 cm - A clean cage - cleanliness is important - A nest box and suitable nesting material (not cotton wool type) - Plenty of exercise - Brushing - particularly the long-haired breeds - To be looked after at holiday times - Your time and interest for the rest of your life

Dog Care: Exercising Your Pet
by the American Animal Hospital Association
More Pet Resources More Dog Care Tips More Cat Care Tips Flea Activity Dog Walking Calculator ... Talk with Pet Owners You know it's good for you. You know that exercise can give you energy, help you maintain a healthy weight, keep your muscles and joints flexible, help you live longer, and above all, make you feel better. For all the same reasons, your pets need to get up and get moving. Not only can exercise extend your furry friends' lives; it may also expend some of their nervous energy and make them a little less likely to chew on the living room drapes. The thing is, nobody's filled pets in on all of these benefits of exercise. Without someone to lead the way, they're not going to run laps or do leg lifts in their spare time. So as a wonderful pet parent, part of your job is ensuring your animal family members get safe, enjoyable exercise on a regular basiswhether they're cats, dogs, turtles, or ferrets! All pets need some physical activity to live a happy, healthy life.

Care of Small Pocket Pets
Pocket Pets include guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. The care of each of these pets is similar. Each require a roomy, safe cage appropriate for their size and climbing habits. The cage can be bedded with wood shavings or shredded paper and food should be supplied in suspended feeders or heavy crocks that can't be tipped. It is best to accustom these pets to drink from a water bottle with a sipper tube to prevent water from spilling in the cage. Guinea Pigs Guinea pigs are native to the Andes Mountains of South America, but are commonly seen here as pets and research animals. They are related to chinchillas and porcupines. Guinea pigs make excellent pets if handled gently and seldom bite. They can be housed in a large aquarium or other open top enclosure as they seldom climb. They are best kept at 65-79 F. Guinea pigs are fed commercial pellets. Because they, like humans need vitamin C, they can be fed one small handful of kale or cabbage or one quarter orange daily.

Numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects of animals on the health and adjustment of individuals, including children. School counselors can use small animals such as hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs as an effective adjunct intervention. Pocket pets help build rapport, enhance the counseling relationship, and facilitate work on issues including feelings, responsibility, grief, and attachment. "What happened to Harry?" Brothers Charles and Joe, reenrolling at my school for their fifth elementary placement, had stopped by the counseling office on their first morning back to check on an old friend. The boys, who had surrendered their own pets over the course of several family moves, were saddened to learn that Harry the hamster had died of advanced age. At the same time, they were intrigued by my newest resident, a dwarf hamster named Ginger. Charles immediately volunteered to take Ginger under his care, begging to take him home over spring break. His offer dovetailed perfectly with my own plans: I wanted to check in with Charles regularly, I hoped to cultivate his emerging sense of responsibility, and, not incidentally, I needed a hand with hamster chores.

How to Care for a Hamster
Hamsters are perfect first pets for youngsters and can live for two to five years. They fit in the palm of your hand, they're lovable and cuddly, and caring for them is easy and inexpensive. Steps: Buy a hamster that is between 4 and 7 weeks old. They're easier to tame when they're young. Keep the cage away from drafts and direct sunlight. Cover the cage floor with a thick layer of bedding. Wood shavings are best, because they are absorbent and nontoxic. Keep the bedding warm and dry'moisture can cause fatal infections. Keep a filled, clean water bottle attached to the side of the cage. Provide plenty of chew toys. Hamsters love the cardboard tubes found inside rolls of toilet paper and paper towels. Attach hamster wood chews to the side of the cage. Make a small box for your hamster to sleep in. Cut a 2-inch doorway into a closed box. Place the box in a far corner of the cage. The hamster will fill the box with bedding and chewed-up pieces of cardboard from the toilet paper tubes and will use the box as a bedroom. He will not urinate in the box, so you can use it for many months before replacing it.
