Adoptables Linked Rescues Outdoor Rabbits ... Hamsters as a New Pet Of the many species of hamster that live in the wild, relativity few have found there way into the pet world. One of the most common of these is the Golden or Syrian hamster; this is still a comparatively new pet which has only been available since its re-discovery in 1930. Once again this rodents first human encounter was in the laboratory.
Harry Hamster 1kg A complete food for hamsters. Syrian hamsters are solitary animals with both sexes living apart in the wild and only coming together for mating purposes, in captivity these hamsters must be housed separately, as fights to the death are not uncommon. All hamsters will need to be housed in a strong cage that fits tightly onto a strong plastic base, ideally with more than one level and as large as possible. These hamsters are very active creatures throughout their short 3 year lives and should have an exercise wheel with solid treads fitted to the side of the cage so the hamster cannot hurt its feet.

Virtually all domesticated hamsters sold in the pet and research trades are descendants of three of the survivors of this litter. Hamsters were first introduced to the United States in 1938.
On occasion, one may encounter other species of hamsters, but these are much less common than the Syrian hamster. The smaller, dark brown Chinese hamster (dwarf hamster) is often used in biomedical research, and they are sometimes acquired as pets. These hamsters are recognized for their small size, dark brown color and black stripes over their backs. The Armenian (grey) hamster and European hamster are two other species occasionally used in research, but seldom kept as pets. The following information pertains particularly to the Syrian or golden hamster, since they are by far the most popular.
Diet
Water is easily provided in water bottles equipped with sipper tubes. This method also helps keep the water free from contamination. Always make sure that the tunes are positioned low enough to allow the pet easy access. Juvenile hamsters need special consideration that they are strong enough to use the sipper tube as well as able to reach it. The average hamster drinks approximately 10ml of water per 100 grams of body weight (average adult size). Although this amount is only a fraction of the total bottle volume, fresh water should be provided daily, not only when the bottle empties.

Hamsters are small, virtually tailless, velvet-furred rodents with enormous cheek pouches. They originated in the Middle East and Southeastern Europe. The most common and popular, both as pets and laboratory, is the golden or Syrian hamster. Color and hair-type varieties of the golden hamster include cinnamon, cream, white, and "teddy bear" (the long-haired variety). Most of the hamsters sold as pets or used in research are the descendants of 3 litter mates domesticated in 1930. The cheek pouches are a relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters. They are actually a cavernous out pouching of the oral (mouth) cavity on both sides, extending alongside the head and neck to the shoulders. These pouches are used to store food and allow the hamster to transport food from where it is gathered to the hamster's den or nest. The food is then eaten later, at the hamster's leisure. Hamster owners not familiar with these cheek pouches often panic when seeing them fully distended for the first time, thinking they represent tumors or abscesses. Another relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters is the paired glands in the skin over the flanks. These appear as dark spots within the haircoat and are much more obvious in males than females. These glands are used to mark a hamster's territory and also have a role in sexual behavior.

We are recommended by Vets and are a fully insured cat care/pet care business established in 1996 and we are the second pet care business in London that started up. Most start up and fold when they realize there's not much money in it. We do it out of love for animals not money. We also donate money to pet charities and rescue centres throughout the world from our pet care work. Our aim is to give lots of TLC to your pets... We do not agree with catteries as cats are territorial animals and like to be in their own surroundings. This is why our cat sitting at home service works so well for both you and your cats. We visit your cats at home while you are away and can visit once, twice, or three times a day for any length of period you require. There are three of us who are cat owners and experienced in handling and caring for cats. We can administer insulin injections to diabetic cats and give tablets to the most difficult cats.

Hamsters
Hamsters are relatively easy to care for, and their cute, inquisitive nature can provide hours of entertainment. When handled properly, hamsters generally will not bite, but those awakened from a deep sleep, startled, or threatened may do so. Hamsters have poor eyesight but a keen sense of smell and good hearing. They are nocturnal and stay active throughout the night. Hamsters' expandable cheek pouches allow them to carry food and bedding back to their nests where it is pushed out with their front feet. They can stuff an amazing amount of food into their pouches! The most common pet hamster species are the golden, or Syrian, hamster and the Chinese hamster. Golden hamsters are short-haired or long-haired (teddy bear), and their fur can be golden brown, cinnamon, creamy white, or a combination of these colors. Chinese hamsters are smaller and usually dark brown in color. The Siberian, or Djungarian, hamster is a dwarf variety with grey fur and a black stripe down its back. Some hamsters are social and like to be housed in pairs while others prefer to be housed alone. If housed in pairs, it is best to pair hamsters before they reach puberty in order to prevent fighting. Mature female hamsters will fight with other females and males except during breeding. Mature males will fight with other males. Neutering will cut down on aggression and unwanted breeding.

Retrurn to Pocket Pet Page Care of Pet Hamsters July/August 1994 Vol. 6, No. 4 Veterinary Practice STAFF This information leaflet is designed as a method of communication between veterinarians and clients who own a hamster. Diet, handling, housing, breeding, and diseases of hamsters are discussed. if you have any questions, be sure to ask your veterinarian to answer them for you. Introduction Hamsters are common household pets. They are inexpensive, friendly, and fairly easy to care for. Hamsters are rodents, often referred to as "pocket pets" because of their small size. Some overall facts regarding hamsters are given in Table 1. Hamsters are somewhat peculiar for rodents with large cheek pouches and short, stubby tails . They have gained popularity as pets and research animals since the 1930s. The Syrian hamster's (Golden Hamster) wild habitat extend through the Middle East and south-eastern Europe. In 1930s litter of eight baby hamsters was taken to Isreal and raised as research animals. Virtually all domesticated hamsters sold as pets today are descendants of three survivors of this litter Hamsters were first introduced to the United States in 1938. Since their domestication, several color and haircoat varieties of Syrian hamsters have become common due to selective breeding. The three basic groups that now exist and are popular as pets include: the Golden hamster, the colored, short-haired Fancy hamster, and the long-haired Teddy Bear hamster. Occasionally, other species of hamsters may be encountered, but they are much less common than the Syrian hamster. The smaller, dark brown Chinese hamsters (Dwarf hamsters) are often used in biomedical research and are sometimes acquired as pets. These hamsters are recognizable by their small size, dark brown color, and black stripes over their backs. Armenian (gray) and European hamsters are two other species occasionally used in research but seldom kept as pets.

Physical Description Hamsters vary widely in physical appearance. They can be one solid color or multi-colored, ranging from brown, orange, black, white to gray. They may also have bands, arches, spots or other fur patterns. Popular breeds of hamsters include Syrian, Siberian, Teddy and Dwarf. They live two to three years. Behavior Hamsters are nocturnal, therefore they are most active at night. They have keen senses to aid them in the dark. They must be woken up very carefully or they will easily become irritable. They are fairly intelligent, very active and friendly. They should always be provided with toys to play with when awake. They have poor depth perception and may walk off of tall tables. Diet Hamsters need diets (Kaytee or Hagen) containing a minimum of 16% protein and 4 -5% fats. If the food is more than 90 days old or has been exposed to moisture, they should be discarded. Hamsters need a pelleted rodent diet as their primary food. Supplement pellets with fresh fruits and vegetables such as pesticide free broccoli, peas, carrots, grapes, apples, strawberries and bananas. Hamsters also like grass, clover and dandelions.
