How to Care for Hamsters
Whim Whams Illustration Studio Adapted from Animal Sheltering Magazine Hamsters were living in relative obscurity until just 70 years ago, when a zoologist discovered a family of these rodents in the Syrian desert. Today, hamsters' friendly nature and adaptability have placed them among America's most popular small pets. To learn how to fulfill the special needs of these cuddly creatures, follow the suggestions below. Set up House When putting together a hamster's living quarters, consider the animal's natural habitat. In the wild, hamsters live underground, emerging under cover of darkness to search for food. Domestic hamsters still prefer the "night shift," so it's best to house them in a quiet, dimly lit room away from drafts, direct sunlight, and noisy animals. An aquarium that holds at least ten gallons is usually suitable for hamsters, as long as the top of the tank allows for proper ventilation. A fine-mesh screen will do the trick, but make certain it's fastened securely to keep curious hamsters from attempting an escape. (Avoid the colorful plastic rodent homes sold in pet supply stores, as they are difficult to clean and offer easy escape routes.)

Care of Rodents
Below is some basic care information for rodents. Please consult detailed care manuals for these animals, websites or check with your veterinarian. Hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice are members of the rodent family. They have long upper and lower incisors (front teeth) that grow continuously. All rodents require material to gnaw, in order to keep their incisors sharp and worn to the proper length. Hay, cardboard tubes and wood (apple, pear, willow) are all suitable for your rodent to chew on. Generally, rodents are more active at night and can be quite noisy! Housing A cage measuring 60 x 30 x 30 cm. is a minimum size for hamsters, gerbils and mice. Rats require larger habitats. Absorbent materials such as white wood shavings should be used to line the cage bottom. Gerbils and hamsters like to dig and burrow so adding a layer of peat moss allows them to exercise this behaviour. Clean the cage often at least once a week. Inside the cage, rodents should have a cardboard or wooden house, toys such as plastic tubes and small boxes, some shredded tissue for nest building and an exercise wheel for smaller rodents. Secure cages are a necessity as rodents, especially hamsters and rats, are real escape artists.

Hamster Pet Care brought to you by Doolittle's Pet Stores... Caring for your Hamster Hamsters are now available in over twenty varieties, featuring many different colours and types of coat. Hamsters remain one of the most popular small pets - they are clean (would you believe they can even be toilet trained), require very little space within the home and are inexpensive to keep. When picking up a hamster cup your hands and slowly scoop him up, remember hamsters have bad eyesight so move slowly and deliberately, soon your new hamster will learn to trust you and realise you mean him no harm. Q. How often should I clean out my hamster? A. As a guide line a hamster cage should be cleaned once a week, but you may wish to do it more often and this is fine. Do not use a household detergent as residues left behind may poison your pet. Special non-toxic disinfectants for small animals are easily available.

HOME ALONE
In the wild golden hamsters live on their own and only meet other hamsters for the purposes of mating. If domestic hamsters are kept together, whatever their sex, they will almost certainly fight - causing serious injury and possible death. Another reason to keep hamsters apart is that they are fast breeders. If a hamster does give birth then you should leave the nest well alone. Disturbing the nest could make the female over-anxious and she will kill her babies. When the young reach puberty at five to six weeks they must be separated immediately before they start to mate or fight.
GOOD ACCOMMODATION
The home should be as large as possible - at least 750mm x 400mm x 400mm. It should be made of hardwood or covered with a plastic finish like Formica to prevent the hamster from gnawing through it and escaping. The home should have a sliding glass top for easy viewing. A wire mesh strip must be inserted in a wall to provide ventilation. It will also serve as a climbing frame. A raised gallery in the living area, connected by ramps, allows for the
bottom of the home to be used as a shredding and burrowing area.

I. Hamsters: Housing INDEX Your hamster's cage is his home, sweet homeand it's up to you to make sure it's spacious and sturdy, and is kept as comfy and clean as possible. A well-made cage and accessories are the most important investments you'll make for your pet. When selecting a cage, keep in mind the golden rule of happy hammy housing. Syrian hamsters, also known as teddy bear hamsters, prefer their own turf and MUST live alone. Dwarf hamsters, on the other hand, like to live in pairs. When you know the species of your pet, you can properly pick out his or heror theirdigs. Either way, there will be a variety of cages to choose from. A ten-gallon aquarium with a mesh cover makes a cozy, easy-to-clean home for hamsters of all kinds. Wire cages are great, too, just be sure that the space between the bars is small enough to prevent your pet from escaping. If you've decided that wire's the way to go, be sure the bottom is plastic. Wire bottoms can be tough on sensitive hamster feetand besides, the plastic will be a lot easier to keep clean. All-plastic cages with tubes, tunnels and hideaways are also an optionand are great fun for hamsters. However, they usually cost more and are much harder to maintain. Dwarf hamsters in particular may have trouble climbing up and down the tubes, but you can help your little guys out by putting a thin tree branch in the tubes for them to climb. Take extra-special care when deciding on a location for the cage. Your hamster's home should be situated away from direct sunlight and drafts. And remember, these fuzzy fellows are nocturnal, so you may want to think twice before setting up the cage in a bedroomunless you don't mind being awakened at 3 A.M. by a busy hamster hard at play. And since your pet will be sleeping during the day, he'll do best if the cage is in a dimly lit area without too much noise or traffic.

I. Hamsters: Common Health Problems INDEX If you provide your hamster with a proper diet, stay on top of your cage cleaning duties and keep him physically and mentally stimulated with safe toys, your pet should remain healthy throughout his life. But even these hardy little fellows can get sickand because they are such, well, LITTLE fellows, it can be difficult to recognize symptoms of illness. Knowing what to look for can help you to help your hammy in case of a problem. You've no doubt noticed your pet storing food in his cheek pouches. Par for the courseunless his cheeks seem unusually swollen or lumpy, especially on one side. Food, nesting material or other objects may have become IMPACTED in his POUCH. If left untreated, this could lead to an abscess. You can try cleaning the pouch yourself with warm water from an eyedropper, but the better, less stressful option is to have your pet's veterinarian clean it out. One of the most common hamster health problems, WET TAIL is a bacterial disease that causes severe diarrhea, caked feces around the anus and tail, loss of appetite and lethargy. Animals afflicted with this potentially lethal, highly contagious illness stay hunched over when moving, and may constantly cry out in pain. Time is of the essence, so it's important to seek veterinary care immediately. Treatment involves antibiotics, fluids and supportive home care. Some critters may like it hot, but not hamsters. These guys are highly susceptible to HEATSTROKE, so keep your pet's cage out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Signs of heatstroke include lethargy, damp fur and unresponsivenesswhich require immediate veterinary attention.

Care of Hamsters
General Information Handling and Restraint Housing Hygiene ... Human Allergies Hamsters are small, virtually tailless, velvet-furred rodents with enormous cheek pouches. They originated in the Middle East and southeastern Europe. The most common and popular, both as pets and laboratory animals, is the golden or Syrian hamster. Color and hair-type varieties of the golden hamster include cinnamon, cream, white, and "teddy bear" (the long-haired variety). Most of the hamsters sold as pets or used in research are the descendants of 3 littermates domesticated in 1930. The cheek pouches are a relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters. They are actually a cavernous outpouching of the oral (mouth) cavity on both sides, extending alongside the head and neck to the shoulders. These pouches are used to store food and allow the hamster to transport food from where it is gathered to the hamster's den or nest The food is then eaten later, at the hamster's leisure. Hamster owners not familiar with these cheek pouches often panic when seeing them fully distended for the first time, thinking they represent tumors or abscesses. Another relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters is the paired glands in the skin over the flanks. These appear as dark spots within the hair coat and are much more obvious in males than females. These glands are used to mark a hamster's territory and also have a role in sexual behavior.

Type Warm blooded mammal in the rodent family. Nocturnal, up at night, sleeps during the day. There are many types of hamsters, but only a few types are kept as pets. The hamster is the most popular of the smaller rodents kept as a pet in many countries today. Unlike the mouse, a hamster is virtually tailless. The most popular variety of hamster, kept as pets and used in laboratories, are the golden (Syrian) hamsters. They come in cinnamon, cream and white. Goldens also come in the long haired variety called "teddy bear" hamsters. Temperament Breeding females are larger than males and tend to be aggressive toward them. However the Russian Dwarf Hamster can sometimes be kept with other hamsters. Hamsters are not as demanding of attention as a rabbit, guinea pig, or rat. If the hamster is a child's pet, the child should be taught how to properly handle and care for the hamster. Hamsters should not be allowed to roam free around your house as there are lots of tiny places they can get into and you may have a hard time getting the little guy back again. They also like to chew, so if your hamster is lost for a period of time, it may chew your carpet or furniture. They can also get stepped on and if you have a cat or a dog, a loose hamster can be in great danger. Hamsters cannot see very well and they are not as sure footed and steady on their feet as some other animals. They can very easily fall off of furniture or tables and can really get hurt. Hamster balls are available in pet stores and should only be used with adult supervision.

Cats and dogs may be two of the most popular pets around, but small animals like hamsters are considered to be some of the best pets for first-time pet owners.
Small Pets - Rabbits
The domestic rabbit comes from the Oryctotagus cuniculus species, and is a descendant of wild rabbits from western Europe and northern Africa . Rabbits are herbivores (plant-eating), have a high reproductive rate and are most active at dawn and dusk. When threatened, rabbits won't stand their ground, but will use their lightning speed to run away from harm. This unaggressive behavior makes them popular pets. If you're a rabbit owner, you may have noticed that rabbits will eat their own poop directly from the anus . To help avoid this behavior, you should make rabbit pellet food available for your pet 24 hours a day (keep a small dish in the cage full at all times). These pellets are rich in protein, fiber vitamins and minerals and is the best way for them to obtain these nutrients. You should also feed your bunny lots of
