Take Halloween Safety to the Streets This Year DENVERThe fun of trick-or-treating and the excitement of Halloween may be a distraction for children. However, careless street crossing coupled with drivers' more limited vision at night can make for a deadly mix. Barbara Bailey, an injury prevention with the Colorado SAFE KIDS Coalition based at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said, "Many of the risks children face on Halloween can be avoided if parents discuss important safety precautions with them." Bailey said that children are four times more likely to die as pedestrians on Halloween than any other night of the year. "Halloween can indeed be scary, with increases in pedestrian injuries, burns and falls among children," she said. To make certain Colorado's trick-or-treaters stay safe this Halloween, Bailey provided the following safety tips for parents to follow when preparing their children for Halloween. Tips included: For kids ages 12 and under:
    • Adults should accompany children under age 12 on their trick-or-treat rounds.

Dress Up In Safety This Halloween
As Halloween creeps up, kids will dream of spooky costumes, jack-o'-lanterns and haunted houses. Halloween is one of the most thrilling nights of the year for children, and also one of the most dangerous. As kids hit the street to trick-or-treat, the potential for unintentional injury rises. In fact, children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other night of the year. Halloween can indeed be scary, with increases in pedestrian injuries, burns and falls among children.
"Children may be distracted by the excitement of the night and the fun of trick-or-treating, and may not take safety to the street. Careless street crossing coupled with drivers' more limited vision at night can make for a deadly mix." said Keene Hart of the Quad Cities' SAFE KIDS Coalition. "Many of the risks kids face on Halloween can be avoided if parents discuss important safety precautions with their kids."
As parents and children take time to construct costumes and decorations, the Quad Cities' SAFE KIDS and Quad Cities Safe Communities Coalitions recommends the following:
For kids ages 12 and under:
    • Adults should accompany children under age 12 on their trick-or-treat rounds.

Objectives: TSW: Build on creative writing skills. Materials: A sheet of paper with a pumpkin shape drawn on it. (Lines can be drawn to help younger students write in a straight line.) Pumpkin Printables Plan:
  • I start by telling the students that they are each a pumpkin in Mr. Smith's pumpkin patch.
  • Next, I tell them that I am shopping for a pumpkin to carve and put on my porch for Halloween. Their objective is to write to me and tell me why they are not a good pumpkin for me to choose. I stress that they should use creative adjectives to enhance their writing.

By Jo Bertrand This lesson has some fun activities and language learning tasks based around the theme of Halloween. The activities include singing songs and making Halloween decorations. Aims
    • To integrate cultural awareness into the course To introduce / practise Halloween related vocabulary – cat, hat, bat, witch, ghost, pumpkin, black… To work on pronunciation and rhyming sounds To get children used to following simple instructions to make easy craft objects
    Materials
    • Pre-made bingo cards (one per person) plus a call card for yourself http://www.dltk-cards.com/bingo/bingo1.asp Flashcards of ‘cat’ ‘hat’ ‘bat’ ‘black’… Picture cards of cats, hats, bats, witches, ghosts and pumpkins – one per child For a Spider mobile you will need:
Black pipe cleaners Black paper Two coat hangers String Sellotape Scissors Small circles of red or white paper Glue
      For Lanterns you will need:
        Orange paper/card Stapler Scissors
For Witches hats/wands you will need:
Black paper/card Foil to decorate Coloured paper to decorate String Sellotape Glue
Before the children come into the room or if they are already there before your lesson starts then simply go to the board and draw a picture of a witch or pumpkin or other Halloween symbol on the board. Elicit from the children what is special about today or what is going to be celebrated very soon, depending on what day you teach them. Ask them to tell you about how they celebrate Halloween. This can be done in their own language if they are very young. You can then mention ‘costumes’ and ‘trick or treat’ if these two elements haven’t already been mentioned.
