Halloween Song -I'm A Pumpkin-
Here's a good way to teach adjectives of feeling. Use a lot of facial expression, gestures and movement to teach them.
1. How to teach:
Introduce the vocabulary first with facial expressions and gestures:
happy, crazy, silly, lazy, sick, mad, sleepy, sad
Add: I'm (happy) and drill all the sentences with gestures
2. How to sing the song:
Have students make a gesture of a big, fat pumpkin (arms rounded to the side)
At "Now..." cross arms in a sweeping motion in front of your face (henshin!) "I'm a jack o'lantern!" I'M A PUMPKIN (Melody: Did You Ever See a Lassie) I'm a pumpkin, a pumpkin, a pumpkin I 'm a pumpkin now I'm a jack o'lantern I'm happy I'm crazy I'm silly I'm lazy I'm sick I'm mad I'm sleepy I'm sad I 'm a pumpkin now I'm a jack o'lantern Page TOP

DO THINGS RIGHT ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT Teach your kids the safe way to trick-or-treat. Trick-or-treaters should:
  • Always walk, not run and stay on sidewalks.
  • Always obey traffic signals and never cross the street between parked cars.
  • Always wear a mask that doesn't restrict vision. Cool face paint is a great alternative to masks.
  • Always dress for the weather, not for the holiday.
  • Never go inside a house for treats, always stay in the doorway.
  • Never trick-or-treat alone. Younger children should always be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Older children should travel with a group of friends.
MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR
  • Check with your area mall or community center to see if they offer alternatives to neighbor hood trick-or-treating.
  • Plan and review the trick-or-treat route and discuss behavior which is acceptable to your family.
  • Know where your older children are going, and with whom; make sure to set a curfew or check-in time.
  • If your children go out on their own, make sure they wear a watch they can read in the dark.
  • Give older children exact change so they can call home.

Many people view Halloween as a time of innocent fun. Children love to dress up as their favorite characters. They will go door to door saying the infamous words "trick or treat". Many adults also love Halloween, because it gives them a chance to let loose and act silly. Every year in the U.S.A. alone, millions of dollars are spent on Halloween goods. Halloween is the second highest grossing money maker outside of Christmas. The promotion of Halloween by the television moguls, the advertisers, and not to mention the blockbuster sales of movies and rentals this time of year. Everyone can see Halloween is big business. Alot of people do not see the harm in all of this Halloween hoopla. But yes, there is a darker side to Halloween than anyone dares to imagine.
THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN
Unlike our modern-day Halloween, theirs was not a children's holiday. The Celts and their priests, the Druids, from Great Britain and Ireland. They celebrated "SAMHAIN". It was a festival that marked the eve of the Celtic New Year, which began on November 1. The fall harvest was complete and winter was looming ahead. The Celts believed the sun was fading away, at this time of the year. For the next several months, darkness prevailed. The Celts believed that during "Samhain" the veil separating life from death was at its thinnest. On the evening of October 31, the evil spirits and souls of the dead passed through the barrier and visited the world of the living. The Celts believed these spirits could cause all kind of havoc. They also believed that they could talk with the dead, departed loved ones and such. They also believed that they could devine the future. The powers of darkness were conjured up on "Samhain". The Devil himself, would be called upon to foretell of future events.

Halloween in Japan On a side note, I taught a junior high school class a little bit about Halloween. I had to teach them the origin of the Jack-O-Lantern! Do you know the origin of the Jack-O-Lantern? I had to look that up on the good ol' internet! Then the fun began and I taught them how to carve Jack-O-Lanterns. Some of my students put on costumes or face mask rather that the teacher had brought. It was good fun. However, prior to pumpkin carving, the teacher wanted me to teach the students how to sing the Star Spangled Banner and explain to them the meaning of the lyrics. Who cares about the lyrics! I don't!! haha. Halloween and Star Spangled Banner, that was really random. Then again, I did do this class in early September! Halloween candy a tricky treat
Nutritionists say holiday offers chance for kids to learn about healthy eating
By Judith Forman, Globe Staff, 10/16/2003 Holly Boykin has Halloween down to a science. After trick-or-treating, her sons, Matthew, 7, and Kenneth, 9, dump their candy into a pile in the family's Stoughton home. Boykin checks to make sure everything is securely wrapped, and each boy is allowed to eat three or four pieces. Every day after that, they're allowed one treat either a single piece of bigger candy, or two smaller pieces until the stash is depleted. ADVERTISEMENT "Halloween is a struggle for us," said Boykin, who said she monitors her children's meals and snacks year round. "They want the candy, and Mom says no. You don't want to make candy a forbidden food," she said. The candy battle is waged every Halloween, when kids want to dig into their hoard, and parents worried about their children's weight and health want at least to slow them down. Some area nutritionists and school officials are working to promote alternatives to Halloween candy. Others try to teach moderation. But everyone acknowledges that trick-or-treating time makes it more difficult to sell children on healthy lifestyles.

Tips For Motorists Tips For Parents Tips For Children Other Options for Halloween Fun ... Protecting Your Child From Abductions
For motorists: Stay alert. A normally quiet neighborhood will be busy with pedestrian traffic on Halloween. Trick-or-treaters are more likely to suddenly dart into traffic and from between parked cars, so motorists should be especially careful on streets where there are cars along the sidewalk. Children also are likely to forget to stop at the roadway, or to look out for you, or to listen for the sound of your vehicle. Their costume can also impair their ability to hear or see you - or to move quickly to get out of your way. Watch for children walking in the street. If you don't have to drive on Halloween night, it might be best to just stay home. If you do have to drive, please be patient and SLOW DOWN. Give children lots of time to cross the street. Go to top For parents: Teach your children to always be polite when trick or treating - to say please and thank you and to not push other children out of the way. They should also treat homeowners with respect and never vandalize anyone's home, yard, yard ornaments or vehicles.

http://www.themodernreligion.com/misc/hh/halloween.html
HALLOWEEN Every year, on the evening of October 31st, millions of children across North America paint their faces, dress up in costumes, and go door to door collecting treats. The adults often decorate their houses with ghostly figures, carve scary faces on pumpkins, and put candles in them to create "Jack-O-Lanterns." Unfortunately, among the millions of North Americans indulging in this custom, many are also Muslims. This article will shed some light on the significance and origins of Hallow'een, and why Muslims should not participate in it.
Origins of the Hallow'een Festival The ancient Celtic (Irish/Scottish/Welsh) festival called Samhain is considered by most historians and scholars to be the predecessor of what is now Hallow'een. Samhain was the New Year's day of the pagan Celts. It was also the Day of the Dead, a time when it was believed that the souls of those who had died during the year were allowed access into the "land of the dead". Many traditional beliefs and customs associated with Samhain continue to be practiced today on the 31st of October. Most notable of these customs are the practice of leaving offerings of food and drink (now candy) to masked and costumed revelers, and the lighting of bonfires. Elements of this festival were incorporated into the Christian festival of All Hallow's Eve, or Hallow-Even, the night preceding All Saint's (Hallows') Day. It is the glossing of the name Hallow- Even that has given us the name of Hallow'een. Until recent times in some parts of Europe, it was believed that on this night the dead walked amongst them, and that witches and warlocks flew in their midst. In preparation for this, bonfires were built to ward off these malevolent spirits.

hello again. i am still madd matt. i remain a halloween wizard i teach you and you learn spooky things. occasionally i reap the benefits of your soul in exchange for home decorating tips. i cannot be stopped, only halted. with a cross and a case of clear Gatorade. i hate that stuff. i will nay should nay MUST coat my arms with the blood of your beloved. but first i will tell you how to dress up for this halloween.
if you are like me, you cannot get work because people do not hire the dead. without work i am penniless. without pennies i cannot make wishes in mall fountains. this makes me sad. if i was not already dead i would hang myself. but since i am already dead, i have no choice but to go on without money and without skin pigment, and with a brain so eaten by maggots that i no longer get the jokes on the golden girls. my point is that i don't have enough money to afford a halloween costume. if you are dead you too are in this predicament i have a solution to present. i also have the spirit of the devil swarming inside my gooey viscera. i prey on children.
with a buck fifty and a time machine, you could win a bounty of costumes by way of the masters of the universe press-out book. the book is eloquent and colored like blood. i like blood. i also enjoy polynesian leis. i like to picture the hula girls who used to wear them, decapitated and without movement. i like to picture myself as the cause. i am murderous and delightful. but the he-man book is even more delightful. low low cost, high high art. many costumes await us. and much pain.

We survived Halloween, how about you guys? Well, I had training on Halloween. *sniff* A lot of the expatriates around here have big halloween parties, but I didn't know anyone and most of them were held pre-Halloween, like the 28th, 29th. So I didn't go to any. The surprise was that apparently the Japanese have latched on to Halloween. They don't really have trick-or-treat, but they do have costume parties and stuff, and there were a few Halloweeny-type decorations around. I think, though, that most Japanese who want to do Halloween go to a gaijin bar to watch the white people. Some of the teachers at my school went out for Halloween, but I wasn't posted there yet. I was still in training at Yokohama. But me and the girls in Carolyn's place did end up sitting around trading ghost stories after training let out. And now for something completely different..."Death" was incredible! I wish some of you could have been here. People shouldn't be allowed to have that much fun on stage AND get paid for it. Isn't that always the way? Cool. I'm glad it went well, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the CD. I just sent you a letter asking how I get hold of a copy for my friend Terry, who would think it was great. . . who should I get in touch with?
