Conjure up a costume for Halloween
By Kathy English E-mail this to a friend Printer-friendly version In the hierarchy of favourite holidays, Halloween is high on the lists of many children. Indeed, what's not to love about a day when sweet treats and the magic of make-believe reign. Still, for parents of young trick-or-treaters, that sweet magic can mean both work and worry. After all, it's us who vex over coming up with a creative, innovative and inexpensive Halloween costume. Then, come Halloween night, when our costumed cuties are roaming the streets for sacks full of candy, it's us who worry about their safety. But Halloween can be a treat for parents, too. With your connected computer you can easily find solutions to ensure the only Halloween horrors you experience are the pretend ones.

"As your kids drag you through aisles full of ghosts and goblins, the scariest thing about Halloween is threatening to leave bite marks in your pocketbook," writes Tawra Jean Kellam a Wichita, Kan., mother of three and author of Halloween On a Dime: Frighteningly Frugal Fun . "It can be much less expensive, and a lot more fun, to devise your own chilling creations."

    Should Christians participate in Halloween?
T he October 31st holiday that we today know as Halloween has strong roots in paganism and is closely connected with worship of the Enemy of this world, Satan. It is a holiday that generally glorifies the dark things of this world, rather than the light of Jesus Christ , The Truth. Have you noticed how costumes and masks are getting generally more bloody, gory, and depraved each year? Unfortunately, the gruesome and grotesque and the occult are increasingly glorified in American society, not only on Halloween, but throughout the year in horror movies and in television programs. My family does not celebrate it or participate in it. We do not believe that our children are "missing out," and neither do they. Other days are used for costumes and parties. Happily, all of our children have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior . We have found that Halloween provides an excellent time to remind our children that, as Christians, we are different, and not of this world ( Heb. 11:13-16

You have the freedom to a Judeo-Christian religion
Posted by Amanda Marcotte at 06:12 PM DED Space has got some very good news for us this morning. The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia has filed a petition on behalf of Cynthia Simpson, a witch of the Wiccan faith, seeking to reverse a ruling that upheld Chesterfield County's decision to bar her from giving the invocation at Board of Supervisors meetings.... In 2002, Simpson, who calls herself a witch, asked to be placed on the list of religious leaders invited to deliver the invocation at county board meetings. She later received a letter from Chesterfield's county attorney that said leaders on the list are restricted to those within the Judeo-Christian faith. And I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those stupid lawyers! Digby suggested something like this last week, and everyone concurred. I think we're all sick to death of maintaining the polite fiction that the theocrats just want a generic show of religion in the public space, and this is the sort of case that should expose the lie for what it is. Hopefully this case will get national attention so that theocrat leaders are forced into an unteneable positioneither supporting the rights of a hated religion, which will piss off their followers, or coming out and admitting that they think their religion gives them special rights they want to deny the rest of us.
