Listerine and other mouthwashes won't be of any help for this chronic problem. There are lots of products available to get rid of "volatile sulfur compounds (VSC)" - that supposedly cause this - and I just don't know which one I should try. Also, what's your opinion on tongue-brushing? Thanks! Evil Breath Dear Evil Breath, Alice is certain everyone has, at one time or another, cupped a hand over her/his mouth to check whether her/his breath is fair or foul. When it comes to social situations, it is not uncommon for many Americans to be consciously aware of the way their breath smells to others. It can be embarrassing to have bad breath, particularly when you are conversing with someone face-to-face. You don't want to turn them off, or be faced with watching them back away, making negative facial expressions, and/or turning up their noses, every time you open your mouth. Seriously, bad breath is a common enough concern that it has helped boost the businesses of manufacturers of over-the-counter breath freshening products. However, you are right to point out that bad breath does not disappear with the use of breath mints, gums, sprays, mouthwashes, and the like because they only temporarily mask bad breath odors. So, instead of popping a mint in your mouth every five minutes, what are the more long-lasting alternatives?

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the etiology of breath odor, its prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for the condition.

The key is to remember that bad breath, or halitosis, can have many causes. Certain foods such as garlic can create bad breath. Once food is absorbed into the bloodstream, it
is expelled through the lungs. Until the body eliminates the food, mouthwash or gum will only temporarily mask food odors on the breath.
If you do not brush or floss regularly, food particles, garlic ridden or not, can build up on the teeth and gums. This food residue can contribute to foul smelling breath. Make sure to brush and floss after every meal. And don't forget to brush your tongue, where sticky film from food can reside. You'll be surprised how fresh your mouth feels after scrubbing your tongue gently with a brush and paste.

Halitosis
Dr Rob Hicks Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. It's very common and affects most people from time to time. Its main effects on someone once they realise their breath smells are social anxiety, embarrassment and isolation - and in very rare cases suicide.

What happens?
Friends and colleagues usually notice the condition before the individual does. Most sufferers are oblivious to the fact that they have bad breath until a good friend points it out to them. Once aware that they have bad breath they'll often obsessively check their breath, going to extremes to ensure it doesn't smell, even after they've solved the problem.

Halitosis (bad breath)
I have a terrible problem with halitosis, despite taking a lot of care of my teeth and gums. It's ruining my life. What can I do? Sukhchain
Dr Trisha Macnair responds
Halitosis is very common and is usually caused by simple things you can do something about. Some illnesses can cause bad breath, such as kidney or liver failure (in fact, doctors are taught to smell their patients' breath to look out for these), but if you're otherwise well it's unlikely that these are causing your problem. If you're worried, though, check with your doctor. People often laugh at bad breath, but it's a serious problem and has lead to social isolation, divorce and even suicide. Causes of bad breath The bad smell is usually caused by chemical molecules containing sulphur. These are produced when bacteria that live in the mouth break down protein in the diet. Other factors are important too, including:

Strangely enough, people who have halitosis are usually the last to know. The good news is, you don't have to put up with it any more. 'There's a way to control it,' says Dr. Barry Cash, a dentist who's operated the Fresh Breath Center in Toronto since 1995. 'It's certainly not a cure it's like having diabetes there's only control for the disorder, not a cure for it. But as long as you maintain whatever program you're on, you'll be able to keep it under control.' It starts with careful brushing and daily flossing to remove food particles and plaque. A WaterPik or electric toothbrush can be particularly useful for people with restricted hand coordination. A tongue scraper removes the gunk that's accumulated on the back of your tongue; then you rinse with an appropriate mouthwash.

Brushing and flossing are two of the most crucial elements for attacking bad breath. Bad breath is caused by bacteria which live on our teeth and gums. These bacteria feast on food particles left on our teeth creating volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). These sulfur compounds give breath its foul odor. Brushing and flossing remove bacteria and the food bacteria feast on so that they can no longer create volatile sulfur compounds. Unfortunately, many people do not brush long enough to remove bacteria from their teeth. It takes 2-3 minutes to brush all tooth surfaces yet most people spend less than a minute brushing their teeth. Worse yet, few people take the time to floss allowing odor producing bacteria to grow rampantly in the spaces between your teeth. Brushing without flossing is like washing only 70% of your body when you bathe - the other 30% remains dirty.

What is halitosis?
Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. Learn how what causes it and how to treat it.
Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. Nothing is more offensive than bad breath and nothing is more embarrassing than bad breath. Halitosis can be caused by poor dental hygiene, but that is not always the cause. Sometimes it is a sign of poor health. It could be due to tooth decay, improper diet a nose or throat infection, smoking, constipation, indigestion or liver malfunction. Learn how to find out why you have halitosis and in most cases cure it. If you have halitosis the first place to look for a cause is your mouth. How are your dental hygiene habits? You must brush your teeth and tongue after every meal, floss everyday and use a mouth wash in some cases. Get a dental check up and teeth cleaning. Your dentist can rule out conditions that lead to bad breath such as gum disease, tooth decay, or mouth sores. If your mouth is not the cause of bad breath the next step is to see if your digestive tract is at fault. Poor digestion is sometimes the cause and digestive enzymes are often helpful. If you get indigestion, sour stomach or constipation often, then you can probably guess that digestion is the cause of your bad breath. Chlorophyll tablets help freshen the breath and also improve the flora of the intestines. Acidophilus or bifidus supplements can be taken to maintain a healthy intestinal tract. Cutting out greasy foods and refined sugar from your diet can help digestive problems. If this does not help or you want to be certain that your digestive system is causing bad breath go to your physician. He can perform a test that can determine what the underlying problem is to halitosis.
