Keep in mind that no list of links is ever complete. World Wide Web Resources Search Engines Online research on the world wide web using one of the common search engines may turn up information that is not available through any of the particular sources listed on or linked from this page. For example, search engines may enable you to find online daily newspapers (some of which have extensive online archives) from a country with which you are concerned, or information about particular individuals. For a good comparison of the major search engines, see update to Search Engines Compared . An efficient research strategy might be to start with searchable news sources, then move to sites that have already collected links to the various human rights resources, and finish by using search engines to try to locate additional documents.

Resolving Haiti's crisis calls for
long-term assistance
By Pauline Mumia, Lutheran World Federation/ACT International German version of News Update Geneva, March 10,2004 —The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) representative in Haiti, Michael Kuehn, has appealed for long-term assistance and support for the Caribbean nation after the recent political crisis that has resulted in humanitarian emergency situation. Long-term, participatory programs for development could make an important contribution to crisis prevention, said Kuehn, director of the LWF Department for World Service (DWS) country program in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. LWF is one of four members of Action by Churches Together (ACT) International - a global alliance of churches and related agencies working to save lives and support communities during emergencies - in Haiti. The formation of a government in Haiti, he said, and establishment of trust within society must be given priority following the departure of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, after weeks of violent rebellion against his rule. Insecurity, Kuehn noted, still constitutes a major problem, as many people worry about the violence, looting and widespread destruction.

F: (856) 225-6516 bstephen@camlaw.rutgers.edu Biography Professor Stephens has published a variety of articles on the relationship between international and domestic law, focusing on the enforcement of international human rights norms through domestic courts. She co-authored a book analyzing U.S. enforcement of human rights norms, International Human Rights Litigation in U.S. Courts (Transnational Publishers, Inc. 1996).
From 1990-1995, she was in charge of the international human rights docket at the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York, where she litigated a series of cases addressing human rights violations in countries around the world, including Bosnia, Guatemala, Haiti, East Timor and Ethiopia. In 1995, Prof. Stephens received the Trial Lawyers of the Year Award from Trial Lawyers for Public Justice in recognition of her work litigating international human rights claims. She was a finalist for the same award in 2001. As a cooperating attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights and a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Justice and Accountability, Prof. Stephens continues to litigate human rights cases, including cases filed against U.S.- based corporations alleging responsibility for human rights violations committed in the course of their activities abroad.
Professor Stephens graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, received her J.D. degree from the law school of the University of California at Berkeley, and clerked for Chief Justice Rose Bird of the California Supreme Court. She spent six years studying changing the legal system in Nicaragua in the 1980s.
