I. LIEUX (F‰MININES ET HATIENNES) DE M‰MOIRE: D‰FIL‰E-LA-FOLLE AND SOR ROSE French historian Pierre Nora defines lieux de m©moire ("places of memory") as "moments of history torn away from the movement of history, then returned; no longer quite life, not yet death, like shells on the shore when the sea of living memory has receded" (289). The French historian further explains that lieux de m©moire are fundamentally remains, the ultimate embodiments of a memorial consciousness that has barely survived in a historical age that calls out for memory because it has abandoned it. They make their appearance by virtue of the deritualization of our world-producing, manifesting, establishing, constructing, decreeing, and maintaining by artifice and by will a society deeply absorbed in its own transformation and renewal, one that inherently values the new over the ancient, the young over the old, the future over the past. (289)

    Chapter 10. Haiti: National Security
Figure from a painting by Prosper Pierrelouis CONSOLIDATION OF POLITICAL POWER in the hands of strongmen has made the armed forces the institutional pillar of Haitian society. Born of revolutionary violence and plagued by socioeconomic deterioration, Haiti never succeeded in building civilian institutions capable of rivaling military rule. Part of Haiti's history is the story of competing mercenary bands ( cacos ) and peasant groups ( piquets ), who fought a ramshackle military. The United States occupation, after 1915, reversed the collapse of national institutions that had marked this part of Haiti's history. But the most visible product of the occupation, ironically, turned out to be the Garde d'Haïti, which has evolved into today's armed forces, the Haitian Armed Forces (Forces Armées d'HaïtiFAd'H). The military has continued to be Haiti's only truly national organization with any degree of institutional cohesion. A shrewd autocrat, François Duvalier (1957-71) ruthlessly suppressed all opposition groups. Duvalier purged the army of individuals suspected of disloyalty and brought the remaining soldiers under his absolute control. A powerful paramilitary counterbalancing organizationthe Volunteers for National Security (Volontaires de la Sécurité NationaleVSN), or

Haiti's sin: Fighting to live and be free from European and American chains
Response to Adam Hochschild's article in SF Chronicle Magazine by Marguerite Laurent
In the San Francisco Chronicle's May 30 Sunday Magazine cover story, http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/05/30/CMGKG6F3UV1.D, Adam Hochschild regales us with tales of luxury in colonial Haiti and conveys, in various cumulative ways, how particularly horrific and savage the Haitian Revolutionary War was - more than the French and American ones were perhaps - and how Haiti used to be "the most lucrative European colony in the world" but that today "most Americans think of Haiti as a wasteland of repeated coups and dire poverty, which hundreds of thousands of desperate refugees are willing to risk their lives in small boats to escape." As soon as I read the title, much less the opening lines, I knew what was coming: that old self-serving and warped story about how violent Haitians are, how they won, in combat, against the then most powerful nations on earth - France, Britain and Spain - because disease and pestilence killed off the Europeans and how their 200-year history so far only shows that Blacks simply can't govern themselves without white guidance and "civilization."

Haiti occupies the western third of the island named Hispaniola ("Little Spain") by Christopher Columbus, who landed there on his first voyage in 1492. Within a generation the original inhabitants, the Taino (Arawak) Indians, were nearly exterminated by Spanish colonizers, who then began importing slaves from West and Central Africa. In 1697 the French acquired the western third of the island of Hispaniola, and for the next century African labor made it the most prosperous colony in all the world. The prime source of wealth was sugar, but coffee, cotton and indigo brought riches as well. In the course of a century, the slave population swelled from a few thousand to nearly half a million. Though the island was ruled by the whip, acts of rebellion began to grow more frequent. The first act of the revolution, according to Haitian tradition, was a Vodou ceremony held by runaway slaves in 1791. In 1804 Haiti became the first nation after the USA to gain independence in the Americas when, after 13 years of fighting, the rebels drove the French out of the country. It was the only slave revolt in history ever to create a nation. The Taino Indians had called the island "Ayiti" meaning "Land of the Mountains," and so it was renamed after the revolution. 'Dessalines Ripping the White from the Flag' by Madsen Mompremier High mountains and the surrounding sea give Haiti its distinctive features. The sea was the highway first for slavery, and then more recently for escape, as thousands of "boatpeople" fled political and economic oppression in small crafts. 200 years ago, abundantly forested mountains hid runaway slaves called Maroons. Today the mountains shelter small villages and farms for corn and coffee. But they are no longer lush, as the woods are being transformed into bags of charcoal, the only fuel source for people flooding the cities.

MEDIA ALERT: BRINGING HELL TO HAITI - PART 1
Introduction - Anyone Here Feeling Stupid?
Have you noticed how stupid you feel when you watch the news? Hands up anybody who understands what's going on in Haiti?
The media is good at repeatedly broadcasting footage of armed gangs roaming in trucks, and of quoting senior officials. But the absence of meaningful context and informed analysis - and above all the unwillingness to question the official version of events - means that it is often literally impossible for viewers to make sense of what is happening. For all their satellite communications and computer-generated studios, the news media often do not give us news at all - they give us noise.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the fourth poorest country in the world - 50% per cent of the country's wealth is owned by 1% of the population. Life expectancy is 52 years for women and 48 for men. Unemployment is about 70%. Some 85% of Haitians live on less than $1 US per day. The Haitian Flag:
For a country’s citizens, the national flag is indisputably a symbol of general pride. They would consider any offense to their flag to be an offense to their country. Beyond being an icon though, a flag’s origin can often say a lot about a nation’s social make-up or history. Haitians feel no different and even reserve a special day to honor it. That day is May 18 th In Haiti, Flag Day is a major national holiday celebrated with great fanfare on the grounds of the national palace. Flag Day is also observed by Haitians in the Diaspora. In The United States for example, teenagers whether in High School give homage to the red and blue by carrying it around with them or on their persona for at least a week. Haiti’s flag’s origin is tightly linked to a history of struggle for freedom.

The Spaniards used the island of Hispaniola (of which Haiti is the western part and the Dominican Republic the eastern) as a launching point from which to explore the rest of the Western Hemisphere. French buccaneers later used the western third of the island as a point from which to harass English and Spanish ships. In 1697, Spain ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France. As piracy was gradually suppressed, some French adventurers became planters, making Saint Domingue, as the French portion of the island was known, the "pearl of the Antilles"one of the richest colonies in the 18th century French empire. During this period, African slaves were brought to work on sugarcane and coffee plantations. In 1791, the slave population revoltedled by Toussaint L'Ouverture, Jean Jacques Dessalines, and Henri Christopheand gained control of the northern part of the French colony, waging a war of attrition against the French. By January 1804, local forces defeated an army sent by Napoleon Bonaparte, established independence from France, and renamed the area Haiti. The impending defeat of the French in Haiti is widely credited with contributing to Napoleon's decision to sell the Louisiana territory to the United States in 1803. Haiti is the world's oldest black republic and the second-oldest republic in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States. Although Haiti actively assisted the independence movements of many Latin American countries, the independent nation of former slaves was excluded from the hemisphere's first regional meeting of independent nations, in Panama in 1826, and did not receive U.S. diplomatic recognition until 1862.

    http://www.iacenter.org/haiti/impact.htm
Haiti's Impact on the United States what 'voodoo economics' and high school textbooks reveal
July- September 2003 Greg Dunkel Inspired by the 200th anniversary of Haiti's independence, all sorts of articles on Haiti are popping up, most bemoaning its current fiscal crisis. Some examine the role the United States has played there, mostly presenting its aid programs as benevolent attempts to install democracy and alleviate poverty. Others, more accurately, analyze U.S. efforts in Haiti as stifling democracy and the people's will along with extracting every possible dollar. But while it is important to describe the impact that the United States, the world's only superpower, has and has had on Haiti, we must note that Haiti, although poor and isolated, has also had a major impact on the United States, stemming from its place in world history as the only state ever founded through a successful slave revolution. The successful revolution against the French slave owners is a singular event. It is the only time that slaves managed to rise up, smash their oppressors, and set up a new state and social order that reflected some of their hopes and aspirations. There are aspects of U.S. culture, ranging from marching bands and music to dance and literature, where the impact of Haiti can be seen. But the political impact of Haiti's successful revolution is the clearest in some words and phrases commonly used in North American English and also in how the history and significance of Haiti are hidden in high school history textbooks.
