and Katya Charles Barrett When you think of the charm of the Caribbean being shared abroad you think of many countries and cultures but has Japan ever been one of those places that might also be seduced by the sultry sounds of the Pearl of the Antilles? Well thanks to an extraordinary individual The Land of Rising Sun is slowly falling into the hypnotic trance of Haiti. With each beat of the drum, Japan is becoming a new frontier for Haitian art and artist alike. Being geographically far from the Caribbean, Japan is now an oasis for the budding taste of Haitian culture. Like the Pied Piper of long ago there is one man paving the way for Haitian culture in this distant land. Haiti recently celebrated fifty years of diplomatic relationship with Japan. Much of that alliance however, was merely symbolic and not as strong as we would have liked.

62. Windows On Haiti: A Cultural Website
To present a truer, more positive image of the Haitian people and culture than what is commonly portrayed in the media.
http://haitiforever.com/windowsonhaiti/note-ed.shtml
Web site statement
Haitians have survived in a geopolitical environment that has been undeniably hostile to them from the day they voiced their desire to live free in a sovereign nation and ever since. Notwithstanding, they have created a startlingly different way of life, a unique signature of Religion, Arts, Language, and above all a sense of identity deeply rooted in spirituality and collective remembrances.
We aim to present you some interesting windows on Haiti's culture. True exploration begins when you venture beyond them and engage in respectful contact and discovery.
This web site has emerged as a labor of love for my native country. As such, I dedicate it to her friends and children, the painters and the poets, the researchers and the students, the drummers and the dancers, the musicians and the storytellers; to all participants in and contributors to the uplifting aspects of her culture; to the unsung heroes; to the makandals, the boukmans, the peraltes; to the marie-jeannes and the madan-saras; to the gwo-zoteys and the restaveks, the illiterate and the famished.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank my family for allowing me to spend an inestimable amount of time and resources on this endeavour.

The group says armed criminal gangs and police officers alike are able to act with impunity towards civilians. It urges the US-appointed interim government and UN peacekeepers to carry out complete disarmament. The UN mission in the country is struggling to maintain law and order following a surge in violence in Haiti. The country has recently been hit by a string of abductions and police say that more than 450 people have been kidnapped since March. 'Little progress' The UN has carried out a series of high-profile raids on shanty towns on the edges of the capital, Port-au-Prince, in a bid to paralyse the armed gangs they say are behind the violence. But Amnesty says rogue police officers and demobilised Haitian armed forces are also responsible for human rights abuses.

Haitians seek diversion in traditional cockfights
By Michael Deibert, Reuters, 19 February 2003. In the gague dozens of men gather around a concrete pit littered with feathers and spattered with blood. Cockfighting, a tradition in many Caribbean and Latin American countries, is older than the nation of Haiti itself. Perfectly legal in Haiti, the sport is less vicious than the version practiced in some parts of the world.

The Culture of Haiti
Haiti has a rich natural culture with a unique mix of Voodoo and Catholicism. With cultural influences from Europe and the USA on the coastal towns and African influences throughout the hills and mountains, the culture is extraordinarily unique and is not one found in other countries People and the economy of Haiti
Life is hard for the Haitian people though, despite this difficult way of life, Haitians are usually friendly and generous. Unemployment is very high; 6 out of 10 people are illiterate and more than a quarter of the children suffer from malnutrition. The average household income in Haiti is only 250 American dollars a year. Although farmland is sparse in Haiti, agriculture in the mainstay of the economy. Farming is very labor-intensive, as farmers usually work their small plots of land with picks, hoes and shovels. The farms produce maize, millet, bananas, plantains, beans, yams and sweet potatoes. There is some irrigation and rice is planted in these areas. Other crops in Haiti include: sugar, coffee, cacao, indigo, sisal and cotton. Life in rural Haiti is difficult and stricken with poverty. Many of the young people move to the towns and cities hoping to escape the poverty of the farms, only to find life in the cities is also very hard and they often end up living in Shanty towns.

G eneral Background
Haiti occupies the western portion of the Island of Hispagnola which was named Kyskeya, Bohio (land, country, habitat) or Haiti (mountainous land) by its original Tainos/Arawaks inhabitants. The eastern part of the island is occupied by the Dominican Republic
The island of Kyskeya (Hispagnola or Espagnola) is the second largest of the greater Antilles. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his first voyage on December 6 1492. According to Columbus Log book, he came to the Island after discovering Cuba. From the southern tip of Cuba, he sailed on a south east direction and landed on the northwestern tip of Hispagnola (Kyskeya). H istory The impressions of Columbus on his first contact with the island are recorded on his log book.
Columbus Log book, Thursday, December 6 1492 "At the hour of vespers, we entered a harbor that I named Puerto de San Nicholas, in honor of San Nicholas (St. Nicholas) because it was his feast day. As I approached the entrance of this harbor, I marveled at its beauty and excellence. Although I have praised the harbors of Cuba greatly, this one is even superior, and none of them is similar to it.......
I hope to God that I can have some good trade in gold before I return to Spain. "
