Western Hemisphere The decade bore witness to the triumph of democracy in every country except Cuba and Haiti. It also saw a new era in positive bilateral relations with virtually all countries in the region. Geography, trade, travel, migration, and technology combined to produce an unprecedented level of integration and interdependence. Thus hemispheric issues-crime or migration or economic growth or natural disasters-increasingly had a direct impact on the United States and required new responses. Increasingly, the United States sought to work in partnership with other hemispheric countries to address common problems. The Summit of the Americas process, inaugurated in Miami in 1994, embodied this new cooperative relationship between the United States and its neighbors and facilitated cooperation and integration, with the next Summit scheduled for April 2001 in Quebec. ... On DECEMBER 6, 1492 Christopher Columbus first laid eyes on the pristine shores of the island of Hispanola . Lush with fruits and towering mahogany trees Haiti became known as the "Pearl of the Caribbean". What was once France's richest colony today has become one of the world's poorest nations hindered by dictatorships , depleted natural resources, and overwhelming spiritual darkness.
    In its bicentennial year, the second oldest republic in the hemisphere has suffered political unrest that resulted in the departure of its president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide , devastating floods, economic upheaval and endemic poverty.

    Port au Prince - Culture Gingerbread trim and a view of the harbor are about all Port-au-Prince has in common with other Caribbean capitals. It's a backward city, but it's no backwater. Much of the activity is centered on the Marche de Fer (the Ironmarket), a 19th century iron and tin mix of Paris train shed and Indian minarets. It's chaos inside, packed with stalls, vendors and piles of fruit, baskets, soap, religious totems and toys. It's hot, noisy and likely to overwhelm the faint of heart. Good places to seek post-shopping repose are the Cathedrale de Port-au-Prince, where the decor owes as much to Africa as to Rome, and the Cathedrale de la Ste Trinite, where you can gaze up at murals by some of the country's most famous artists. The Musee d'Art Haitien du College St Pierre has an excellent collection of paintings. The Musee National is more of a national curio cabinet, featuring King Christophe's suicide pistol and a rusty anchor reputed to have been salvaged from Columbus' Santa Maria. In the hills to the southeast of the city is Petionville, as close as the country gets to typical Caribbean resort culture. Galleries sell Haitian art, and restaurants serve some of the best French cuisine in the country. The Jane Barbancourt Distillery in Boutiller, a few miles east of Port-au-Prince, makes nearly two dozen varieties of rum, including flavors like coffee, coconut and hibiscus. You can taste samples and buy bottles at bargain prices.

    Hello :) Welcome! My name is Hertz Nazaire, just Naz... is cool. I was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti (carrefour). I moved to the U.S. at very young age, but my culture is still a very strong factor in molding me as a person. I love Haiti very much and wanted to find a way to show my pride and share my heritage with others. Although Haiti is one of the poorest countries on this earth, many of us still strive to overcome our struggles and make major impact in this world. Haitians have a strong and colorful history, all you have to do is explore the many links on this site to discover this. Kreyol.Com was created in November, 1999 as a tool to keep in touch with my roots while providing small services to Haitians new to the net. The Haitian community online has grown larger since then. This site will serve as a hub to connect you to our peoples everywhere. Being an artist I will publish many of my works on this site and use it as a personal online journal of what I'm up to, so please come back often to view the many updates on my art on my progress to become a better painter. I hope I can keep working on Kreyol.Com for many years to come. I love to design and still have lots of goals for the future of this site.

    Hinche - Culture The bigger part of the population is black, and the official languages are Haitian Creole and French. The school system retains French as the main language The official religion is Roman Catholicism, but the constitution allows the free choice of religion. Some of the people practices also voodoo. East of Hinche, Bassin Zim is a 20 m waterfall in a lush setting 30 minutes drive from town (head east on the Thomassique Road, then fork north at Papaye). The cascade fans out over a rounded, sloping, and limestone rockface. At its foot is a 60 m wide natural pool with deep, milky-blue water that is perfect for swimming. Pandiassou is a tiny village along the main road going west out of Hinche toward Maissade. Bishop Laroche of the Diocese of Hinche called Kobonal the "darkest corner of the Diocese of Hinche." The villagers lived in isolation in an environment where fear and superstition dominated their lives. There are regular flights from Port-au-Prince to Hinche.

    People of Haiti About 95 percent of the people of Haiti are of African origin. The remaining 5 percent is made up of mulatto and other races. As education is not easily accessible to the people, the rate of literacy is low, only 45 percent. Majority of the people are Roman Catholics. Arts, Culture and Music of Haiti Haitian culture fuses African, French, and West Indian elements. Formerly a social divider, the Creole language is now being used in attempts to define a national culture. The language is used in literature, drama, music, dance, and some governmental functions and the country has to its credit several outstanding libraries. Haitian works of art are enjoying increasing worldwide recognition. Flag of Haiti The flag of Haiti contains two equal horizontal bands of blue, at the top; and red with a centered white rectangle bearing the coat of arms, which contains a palm tree flanked by flags and two cannons above a scroll bearing the motto L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE (Union Makes Strength).

    Economy of Haiti Haiti has a third world economy where nearly 70% of the populace depends mainly on agriculture, which employs 68 percent of the labor force. Manufacturing, services, and tourism are the next largest employers. About 50 percent of the labor force is unemployed. Estimates show that unemployment combined with underemployment affect about 85 percent of the labor force. In 2001 Haiti's per capita gross domestic product was very less, leading it to rank among the poorest countries. To add to its economic woes, political conflicts have further led to suspension of international aids.

The storyteller uses a different voice for each character in the story, and may sing songs as part of the narrative. Culture: Arts and Cultural Values Haiti's uniqueness is reflected in the originality of its paintings, music, and literature. Artists and musicians, drawing from the rich folklife and vitality of the people, have created internationally-recognized works and sounds. Haitian paintings of the "naive" or "primitive" school have long been recognized around the world; works by more famous artists have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and France. Handicrafts such as wood carvings and tapestries also employ this primitive style. Haitian music, like Haiti itself, is an original blend, containing elements of African drum rhythms and European dance music. Haiti has also produced writers, poets, and essayists of international standing. Haitian literature has been written almost exclusively in French; however, with the recognition of Creole as an official language, novels, poems, and plays are being written increasingly in Creole. In 1975, the first novel to be written entirely in Haitian Creole was published;

    LAND OF HUNCHBACKS
    A novel by Marian Shaw
    Les Editions Du Cidihea, Quebec, Canada, 1988 Reviewed by Bob Corbett Frank Austin lives in the world of whites and wealthy mulatto businessmen, plotting, scheming, staying on top of the events. This is the story of his fall from grace, and the rise of the hunchbacks, the lowly poor of the capital's slumsthe rise of the Cagoulards, the predecessors of Duvalier's dreaded Tonton Macoutes. Austin is the book's most interesting character. He knows what's going on around him; knows the disdain the Haitian people have for the white foreigners. And he shares their views. Shortly after Duvalier is elected the Cagoulard strongman Dieudonne forces Frank to pay $1000 to get his daughter's visa. Frank finds himself in sympathy with Dieudonne, and is unconcerned with his rich mulatto friend, Frantz. This is also Sarah's story. Frank's 16 year old daughter, home for summer vacation from her exclusive east coast boarding school, falls in love with Robert Deland, son of Magloire's army chief. It's a romance of rebellion and sexual exploration. But these are dangerous times and Deland a catastrophic choice. The romance brings the death of Sarah's innocence, virginity and of her lover himself. Yet she learns precious little from the affair, leaving Haiti in the final scene, still filled with resentment toward her father.
