Muscle strain

Some research studies note that 80 percent of back and neck pain is caused by muscle strain. Unlike leg muscles, which are long and resistant to spasms, the back is composed of short extensor muscles that bridge from vertebra to vertebra. Because these muscles are shorter, they are more prone to spasm. A muscle spasm occurs when muscle fibers in the back tighten and convulse involuntarily.
Muscle strain can also be a result of spinal ligaments near the vertebral bodies or tendons that become painful due to inflammation. Ultimately, a muscle spasm is an alert to the body that it has been pushed beyond its limits. When a muscle spasm occurs, it is a good idea to gently stretch the injured area to increase circulation. The more circulation to the area, the sooner the pain will subside.

Herniated and bulging discs
The spine is composed of many vertebrae stacked on top of each other. Between these bones are discs, which act as shock absorbers. The shock absorbing discs resemble jelly donuts, each having a jelly-like center. As we age, the discs naturally become less flexible and more brittle.

Examining What Matters
From the evening of September 21 through the morning of September 24, seventy-some attendees at the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the ExxonMobil Foundation/NCTM K-5 Mathematics Specialists engaged in meaningful and sustained conversation as they examined issues pertinent to children's mathematical understanding and participated in activities relevant to their own thinking about mathematics. Held this year at the corporation's impressive Downstream Headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, the meeting afforded participants opportunities to share ideas among themselves, presenters and ExxonMobil employees in a unique and comfortable setting. Everyone agreed that ExxonMobil was a gracious and perfect host, providing outstanding lodging, food, meeting space, and arrangements. In this issue, you'll find summaries of presentations given by Ruth Parker and Patty Lofgren; Deborah Ball and Hyman Bass; Tom Carpenter and Megan Loef Franke; and Doug Clements and Vicki Bachman. Remarks from addresses by ExxonMobil Foundation President Ed Ahnert and by NCTM President Lee Stiff are noted in these pages along with an account of Sunday morning's informal conversation with Lee Stiff, Doug Clements and Skip Fennell. Also included are reports from participants' perspectives on Thursday's two concurrent presessions—one led by Virginia Bastable, Deborah Schifter and Jill Bodner-Lester and the other by Skip Fennell. Summaries of Friday's breakout sessions led by Sherry Beard, Susan O'Boyle, Carol Brooks and Casilda Pardo may be found here, along with a report on the listserv session hosted by Holli Aflatouni and Anne Herndon. There's also an account of the lunch conversations at the "birds-of-a-feather" tables organized by Christopher Kribs-Zaleta and Virginia Bastable.

#19 Haircut Trauma
You notice the person who sits next to you at work has been wearing a hat for the last three days. It's not even a good looking hat. They can't look anyone in the eye. This is definately someone with haircut trauma. This one goes out to everyone wearing a hat when they leave the house and leaving it on at work. We've been there. Thunk #18 is available here Love Thy Hairdresser In this season of love, honor and trust, few relationships remain as important or need as much nurturing as the one you have with your hairstylist. It is as difficult to maintain as an old marriage but can be as exhilarating as a new love affair. Hairstylists have the power to give you a killer cut or crappy hack job so you build a foundation of trust based on the their skillfulness and an understanding that you will leave the chair looking fabulous. So when I asked for short in the back, long in the front and despite my efforts to explain, including the visual presentation of magazine clippings get the opposite... well, it’s simply time to start looking for a new lover for my hair. The process of finding a new hairstylist requires about as much political maneuvering and military savvy as orchestrating a coup de tat. And once you leave, you must make a clean break because you can never go back. You can try, but she will always be able to tell when you’ve been to another hairstylist, they know before you even get in the chair. And once you’re caught, you’re toast. "So, who cut your hair?" she’ll ask. "Huh?" you may reply in the hopes of delaying the inevitable response to her question. "I just asked you who cut your hair," she’ll ask you again. And never doubt that she will ask again. "Oh, um, you did." you say desperately. "No, this is not my work. I give good hair cuts." You’ve been caught. There is no way out of the hair trap, try as you might. You must beg forgiveness and promise never to cheat on her again and maybe in time you both can heal from this infidelity.

Dolan, Bennett bring home gold for U.S. swimming
Latest: Wednesday October 11, 2000 01:48 PM AP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) American Tom Dolan crushed the 400-meter individual medley field and broke his own six-year-old world record Sunday. It was his second consecutive Olympic gold in the event. Dolan had the Australian crowd of 17,500 on its feet as he won in 4 minutes, 11.76 seconds, lowering his old mark of 4:12.30 set at the 1994 world championships in Rome. "It was a tough swim," he said. "I was feeling it coming home, but I knew if I got out ahead no one could beat me." Dolan's mark was the eighth world record in two days of swimming competition at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre. Erik Vendt of North Easton, Mass., held on for silver in 4:14.23. Curtis Myden of Canada won bronze in 4:15.33.

Spencer Feldman, October 2004
www.vibraboard.com
Biomechanical Stimulation (BMS) as a therapeutic modality has recently undergone a renaissance in athletic and physical therapy circles. While much has been written about it, I believe the full significance of its therapeutic application has yet to be grasped. To more fully understand the potential benefits of BMS, I believe we must understand the etiology of tremor and the benefits of exercise, as BMS is indeed their physiological involuntary recreation. This paper will discuss tremor, exercise and BMS, as a means to further understand the potential therapeutic roles of BMS in clinical practice. BMS Therapy Let us first define BMS and give a short history. BMS is a form of physical therapy where a patient stands vibrating platform oscillation at between 18 and 50 hertz. This creates a reflexive reaction of skeletal muscles in a chain of small and rapid involuntary muscle contractions. In this way, tremor is induced involuntarily in the body. Unlike electrical muscle stimulation, which is painful in subjects with intact afferent pathways, BMS is purely mechanical. Discovered by Nazarov in the 1970’s, BMS was first utilized by Soviet gymnasts in training for Olympic gold. BMS later began being used by Russian cosmonauts for micro-gravity induced osteopenia and muscle degeneration. While word of BMS spread, for many years it was primarily used by elite athletes to help increase the strength and coordination of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and to increase the rate at which athletic injuries heal. Now however, BMS is being discovered as a therapy by many practitioners outside of the physical therapy sciences, and for a variety of conditions.

The Agony and the Ecstacy
There’s a man who plays your pop favorites of the ‘70s and ‘80s on a flute on the plaza 16 floors below my office window each Tuesday. It’s terrifyingly Muzak. For the first few weeks I was in this office, I thought there might be a dentist’s office directly beneath me. And today, August 31, 2004, he broke out "O Holy Night" by my calculation some four months early. I’m not saying that if he doesn't stop I’m going to go insane and slice my ears off with the paper cutter; I’m just saying that, if I do, it won’t take Marg Helgenberger and her crack CSI team to figure out why.

Memo to God: Church Could Use a Re-Write
All right, lord, I’m sure you’re probably way ahead of me on this one, what with being all seeing and all knowing and all, but I went to church again today and, well, frankly it could use some work. I know, I know, people have been telling you it’s great for round about 2000 years now, but let’s face it, apostles are such yes-men, especially when they’ve got that whole threat of eternal damnation thing to deal with. But I’m not afraid to tell it like it is, because quite honestly, once you’ve been through law school, the thought of an eternity spent with demons clawing out your eyes and maggots feasting on your innards seems downright quaint. So let’s get started, and remember, change is not a four-letter word!

It's amazing how appropriate these songs stay, even as the details vary. The version here is from That Was the Year that Was , recorded July of 1965. A considerable amount of commotion was stirred up during the past year over the prospect of a Multi-Lateral Force, known to the headline writers as "MLF". During the early 1960s, especially 1964-1965, there were proposals to put nuclear weapons under NATO control.

Well, we got the GOP in New York, and a lot of protestors. I’m guessing there is an election coming up. I dunno, I don’t pay attention.
    No, of course I do.
I didn’t used to, and to be honest, it still takes something to get me out to vote. But I dunno. As much as I get tired of hearing how things have changed since 9/11 – and I for one would argue that not near as much has changed as people seem to think – the fact is, the job of president is a pretty damn important one. One that does affect everyone, even if it isn’t always easy to see that.
Lately, I think it’s very obvious how the job affects everyone.
I don’t care who you vote for. In fact, I don’t want email 1 telling me your beliefs, desires, or voting choices, any more than I think you want to hear my Political Manifesto for World Conquest. I mean, you’ll hear about that soon enough, once my army of naked Amazon Warriors gets back from the salon.
I’m just telling you, pay attention.
