Tools Site: Artistic Gymnastics Origins The word "gymnastics" comes from the ancient Greeks, who used the word in a more generic sense to refer to physical activity. The Romans adopted Greek ideas of physical culture into military training, and incorporated gymnastics. They performed an early version of today's vault by building wooden dummy horses upon which to practise mounting and dismounting. In the last two centuries, the sport has become formalized with the specific types of apparatus and scoring procedures used today.
Competitions: Eight pieces of apparatus are used in Artistic gymnastics.
Gymnasts perform exercises on various pieces of apparatus and are scored by a panel of judges on their ability to demonstrate strength, flexibility, agility and timing. Women compete on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor (accompanied by music). Men compete on the vault (set lengthwise), floor, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and the horizontal bar.

Gymnastics Strength Moves
I will now provide a guide to learning three gymnastics strength movements (Front Lever, Planche, and Iron Cross) and describe the specific muscles that must be tensed. A lot of the following tension techniques are not specifically taught in gymnastics. However, gymnasts develop an intuitive understanding of them. Many of these techniques are direct from Pavel. I think that the gymnastics community could benefit greatly from the study and application of Pavel's works.
Front Lever
The front lever is a strength move that is performed on the still rings. It can also be practiced at home on a pull-up bar. The position is very similar to the dragon flag except you are hanging from the rings or a bar. Begin from an inverted hang (you hang upside down with a straight body with your hips by your hands). Make a very tight grip, tuck your pelvis to assume the hollow position, squeeze your abs and glutes, tighten your legs, and point your toes. Begin to slowly lower your body maintaining the hollow position and keeping your arms straight throughout. Consciously tense your armpits and isometrically (without any actual movement) pull downwards (towards the bar or rings) and inwards (towards the front of your body) with your hands (activating your lats and your chest). Your upper body will naturally shift backwards to establish your center of gravity. Begin with a small range of motion and work towards holding a horizontal position.

    Muscle strain

Some research studies note that 80 percent of back and neck pain is caused by muscle strain. Unlike muscles in the legs, which are long and resistant to spasm, the back is composed of short extensor muscles that bridge from vertebra to vertebra. Because these muscles are shorter, they are more prone to spasm.
Physiologically, a muscle spasm occurs when muscle fibers in the back tighten and convulse involuntarily.
At other times, muscle strain is a result of spinal ligaments near the vertebral bodies or tendons that become painful due to inflammation. Ultimately, the muscle spasm is an alert to the body that it has been pushed beyond the limits. When a muscle spasm occurs, it is a good idea to gently stretch the injured area to increase circulation. The more circulation to the area, the sooner the pain will subside.
    Top

    Herniated and bulging discs
The spine is composed of many vertebrae stacked on top of each other. Between these bones are discs, which act as shock absorbers. The shock absorbing discs resemble jelly donuts, each having a jelly-like center. As we age, the discs naturally become less flexible and more brittle. With a fall or heavy strain, these discs can rupture, causing the nucleus to break through the wall of the disc and place pressure on the nerves that branch off from the spinal cord. The result is back or neck pain. The good news is that a herniated disc does not necessarily mean a person needs surgery. In some cases, the symptoms from a minor herniation can go away, and with care, pain recurrences can be minimized.

Visit iVillage.com. It came down to the final vault for Mary Lou Retton at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. A 9.95 would give her a tie for the gold medal; a perfect 10 would secure a solo victory in the all-around. Prior to Mary Lou, no American woman had ever even won a medal in Olympic competition. At 16, Retton was about to launch herself into the American consciousness forever. Sports Illustrated called it “the vault without fault.” Retton, of course, scored a perfect 10 and then went on to win four more medals. “Mary Lou's gold was the biggest thing to happen to gymnastics in the United States," said Bob Colarossi, USA Gymnastics President. "It inspired countless young girls to dream that they could one day reach the top of the sport. There is no question that she represents the single greatest influence in the sport."

    Natural Laws
For fifteen years I trained with great energy in the sport of gymnastics. Even though I worked hard, progress often seemed slow or random, so I set out to study the process of learning. Beginning with standard psychological theory, I read studies of motivation, visualization, hypnosis, conditioning, and attitude training. My understanding grew, but only in bits and pieces. Reading Eastern philosophy, including the traditions of Taoist and Zen martial arts, expanded my knowledge, but I still lacked the understanding I sought.
Eventually, I turned to my own intuitive experience for the answers. I understood that infants learn at a remarkable pace compared to adults. I watched my little daughter Holly at play, to see if I could discover what qualities she possessed that most adults lacked.
