But the news that captured the covers of Time and Newsweek wasn't the red planet. It was a 14-year-old Romanian gymnast named Nadia Comaneci. “I was 14. I think I was too young to understand about the impact I made at that time," Comaneci tells The Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith . “I didn’t know there was no 10 score before in the history of the Olympics, so I had no idea.” She scored seven perfect 10s, and won three gold, one silver and one bronze medal. Mars is back in the news this week and so is Comaneci. She's written her first book, "Letters to a Young Gymnast." Page by page, she tells the story of her life, growing up in rural Romania.

Prior to the trip, I dreaded the thought of going to Colorado Springs it sounded like South Park to me and the thought of doing my morning cardio in high altitude disturbed me. At the end of the day I had a blast! It was cool seeing how the athletes train and where they live. Plus we got to meet some of the younger athletes and their exuberance was very charming. Three of the best novels I read this year were set in Britain in the 1950s and gave an evocative picture of the time without self-consciously laying on the period detail in the way the BBC and Merchant Ivory often do. John Preston's Ghosting is about a man who, partly because of being something of a blank personality, becomes a successful radio announcer and then a TV personality. It's an unsettling impressive debut. Tim Binding's A perfect execution , about a man who becomes the state hangman out of curious compassionate motives, is very good and highly readable even if its plot turns on too many coincidences. Patrick McGrath's Asylum is a powerful tale of a woman, married to the superintendent of a psychiatric hospital, who falls for a patient. This remorseless bleak picture of an out of control affair that wrecks lives is sad and haunting and it's McGrath's best book to date. It deserved to be on the
