  • Goes beyond isolated skills to routines and sequences
  • Provides for individual differences
  • Requires little or no spotting
Forget about dragging around heavy gymnastics equipment; put an end to your worries about student safety. This book brings to life an instructional model that will change the way you teach gymnastics. is a simplification and a rethinking of traditional gymnastics. It's a one-of-a-kind program inspired by children and built around the joy of moving and the interplay of movement and the environment. Borrowing elements from traditional and educational gymnastics, KiDnastics places the conceptual focus on how both traditional and nontraditional equipment can be adapted, changed, or manipulated to produce different practice environments for more efficient student learning. No special equipment is required, and the concepts are adaptable to any physical education setting, regardless of resources or budget.

"Be Fit for Life," Says P.E. Teacher of the Year
Named best high school physical education teacher of 2000 by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, Dale Kephart uses fun and music to help kids get fit for life. Kephart, a former Olympic gymnast, shares her thoughts about physical education and physical fitness for life with Education World readers. "I have always loved to teach," said Dale Kephart after being named best high school physical education teacher in the nation for the year 2000. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), a nonprofit organization of more than 20,000 professionals in the fitness and physical education fields, sponsored the award. Teaching physical education has been the perfect career choice for this former Olympic gymnast, now a grandmother. Kephart isn't one of those gym class teachers standing on the sidelines, blowing a whistle while instructing the students. In fact, she doesn't even use a whistle. She uses music usually the kind that tends to get kids moving!

All About our Pre-school Gymnastics Program
WHY DO I WANT TO ENROLL MY CHILD IN PRE-SCHOOL GYMNASTICS? Gymnastics is fun and fundamental for developing better kids! Children have their greatest learning years between the ages of two to seven. Trying new experiences is the best way to learn. Each week we challenge your child with colors, numbers, shapes and directions to accomplish skills and tasks that teach them about life. Pre-school gymnastics develops skills for athletics such as coordination and strength as well as pre-reading skills and sequence training.
FUN IS FAR MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE Our goal is to get your Dipper excited about participating in life's adventures; not contented to be an observer for fear of failure. A healthy attitude about participating leads to lifelong fitness. ~Back to Top~
DIPPER GYMNASTICS CURRICULUM
For over 30 years, Jewart's Gymnastics has been teaching kids in the North Hills to roll, bounce and jump. Our curriculum is based on the nationally certified, KAT, gymnastics pre-school program, which encourages each child to experience skill development at his/her own pace. Through challenges, circuits and progressions we teach skills and develop your child's natural abilities in a safe, fun, nurturing environment. The apparatus is custom designed to fit the abilities of a pre-schooler. Classes are divided by age groupings that allow for gymnastics to be taught to children with similar developmental characteristics.

With Teaching Rhythmic Gymnastics
The book takes a developmental approach that places you, the teacher, in the role of facilitator, using themes, guided discovery, and problem solving to encourage students to work at their own ability levels. The students may work individually or in groups, which help them build teamwork, collaboration, and leadership skills. You can easily include special-needs populations by using simple equipment modifications or program adjustments. Plus, the book includes suggestions for tailoring a rhythmic gymnastics unit for older (secondary) students.
By providing open-ended movement tasks and challenges, you can use this program to guide children to self-discovery within their individual capabilities. After developing movement and spatial awareness, students get the opportunity to use apparatus and discover the fundamental movements and vocabulary along the way. To expand their learning, students refine and add to their movements through a series of learning challenges. The culmination of the learning process occurs when students combine their newly discovered skills into sequences and routines.

Gymnastics 4: The Turners and Others in America
The Turner movement had the biggest long-range effect on American gymnastics as we know the sport. As previously noted, tens of thousands of Jahn's Turners emigrated to the United States during the late 1840s and early 1850s, and they formed societies in major cities. The first was the Cincinnati Turngemeinde, founded on November 21, 1848. Soon, there were other organizations in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Brooklyn, and Louisville. In September of 1851, the Philadelphia Turngemeinde hosted a gymnastics festival at which a national organization, the Socialistischer Turnerbund, was founded. Arguments over slavery hampered the organization for the next decade, as many local societies adopted abolitionist planks while others wanted to stay out of politics and focus on physical activities. The Turnerbund dissolved under the pressure during the Civil War, but a new organization, the Nordamerikanischer Turnerbund (North American Gymnastic Union), was organized in 1865. Immigration from Germany reached more than 100,000 a year after the war ended and, by 1867, there were 148 local societies in the the Union. Turners actively campaigned for physical education programs in schools and colleges and, in many cases, helped set them up. In 1866, the union founded a seminary to train physical education teachers. It had its greatest success after 1874, when it moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, under the leadership of George Brosius.

Sandra feels that gymnastics is the best sport available to children, especially preschool through middle school age because of the valuable lessons it teaches to every child. The physical advantages; increased muscular strength, coordination, and flexibility are alone advantageous to all children, but increasing a child's self esteem, and teaching a child to be the best he or she can be is a very valuable lesson that all children get from gymnastics.
