... Current Spotlight Spotlight: Valorie Kondos Field, Gymnastics Coach How could a woman who never competed in gymnastics rise to become the head coach of the top collegiate gymnastics team in the country?
If you're Valorie Kondos-Field, head coach of the UCLA women's gymnastics team, anything is possible.
"So I'd come home from ballet and go out in my backyard and try to teach myself gymnastics," she says.
It was during a visit back home to Sacramento in 1982 that Kondos-Field found out about an opening for a dance coach for the UCLA gymnastics team. She got the job and was initially assigned to coach balance beam. In 1990, she was hired as head coach, a move that caused an uproar around the country.
"People were saying, 'Why would UCLA, which has one of the best gymnastics programs in the country, hire this dancer/choreographer to be their head coach?'" Kondos-Field recalls.

    76. USA Gymnastics Online: Technique: A Progression For Teaching The Stalder Handsta
This article presents one possible progression for teaching the Stalder to HS,and is based on George, GS (1980), Biomechanics of Women s gymnastics.
    http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/publications/technique/1997/9/stalder.html
A Progression for Teaching the Stalder Handstand by John Wojtczuk
    North Stars Gymnastics Academy, NJ
The Stalder The key here is the technique of the entry into the skill, what has been called a "late drop." There was also a study by Gord Osbourne (University of Alberta) in Canada that compared the two techniques on entering into the Stalder for men's horizontal bar, and indicates that biomechanically the late drop was a better technique. It was watching the Stalder HS/toe HS sequence that was key for me. The absolute similarity of the drop for the two skills gave me the ideas for these progressions, and a key to performing the skill well. The advantage of the "late drop" is that it forces the maximum extension away (for swing) from the bar with the best control. It parallels the drop from a HS for a clearhip circle or glide kip, so there is some "carry-over" from those skills. On page 17 is a chart to show a possible progression for teaching the Stalder.
    The First Line of Drills
Now let's take the top line of the chart. The first step from left to right are the flexibility requirements for this skill, an excellent pike and straddle compression. The lower back may be susceptible to strains if not stretched well. There will be a good amount of force stretching the lower back at the "bottom" of the circle, so excellent lower back flexibility is as important as leg and hip flexibility to "get into" the proper straddle position to perform the skill. The second element over is a specific "strength" drill for the last phase of the skill–the HS. Using a floor bar, first straddle press HS with the feet behind the bar. Later on, the feet will be placed slightly "in front" of the bar with the hands having to reach slightly between the legs and under the body to press to the HS, partially simulating one of the opening techniques for the Stalder.

    77. USA Gymnastics Online: Early Gymnastics Curriculum Design
Thus, the gymnastics instructor is faced with a teaching/learning situation thatis simultaneously strict and free. Instructors should always proceed from
    http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/publications/technique/2002/9/earlygymnastics.html
Early Gymnastics Curriculum Design by Wm A. Sands, Ph.D., C.S.C.S. Vice Chair, Research, USECA
Gymnastics skills begin with fitness characteristics. If the gymnast is not fit enough (i.e., strong, flexible, etc.), skill learning will be impossible. Of course, the gymnast cannot just condition and not practice skills. Skill practice should focus newly acquired fitness (e.g., strength and flexibility) in skill learning so that the fitness quality is focused specifically at gymnastics skills. Following fitness, the gymnast should understand and be able to achieve the necessary body positions. After fitness and body shapes, the gymnast usually progresses in the following way (Figure 1): Rolling skills are usually taught early. Rolling skills are used to prepare the gymnast for movements that are close to the floor, and as a means of recovering from a fall while learning another target skill. The instructor should emphasize methods to clear the head and methods of making the roll smooth. Clearing the head may require considerable upper body strength. Performing a smooth roll (i.e., not bumpy) requires that the gymnast's body moves smoothly from one contact point to the next (i.e., from shoulders to back to hips, to feet). Upright balance and locomotion involves body shapes and simple movements. Upright balance, of course, doesn't involve being inverted. The gymnast learns about body shapes and body control while trying to hold unusual body positions in static and in upright locomotion. The gymnast should be instructed in appropriate body positions and postures. When the gymnast is asked to hold a balance position for a period of time or during a movement, the posture and position often deteriorate. Instructors should monitor the gymnast's body positions so that poor postures are identified early and the gymnast becomes able to identify and adopt specific body positions while moving.
