THE DRILLS AND SKILLS PAGE
The skills page is intended to be a forum for gymnasts, coaches, or anyone who just wants to learn about gymnastics skills. It was created because I noticed a lack of this kind of information on the net. If you are a gymnast it is not intended to replace your coaches techniques. It is just to give different viewpoints and ideas on how to learn a skill. Every gymnast learns skills differently. This is a place you can submit and find different techniques and methods to learn various gymnastics skills. This is NOT intended to teach anyone gymnastics in an uncontrolled environment. Many of the skills discussed could be extremely hazardous if done incorrectly. Please only work these drills under a qualified coaches direction. Many of these skills involve flight, inversion, and unusual positions, any of which could result in serious injury, paralysis, or death. With that said. Please enjoy.
Note: Please visit my sponsors. If even for a moment, it will enable me to spend more time developing the site so it can be more of a service to you. If you were planning on buying something on-line, please remember to shop through my site. Thanks. I have a lot of information to add to the site, I need to find the time. Spectrum Gymnastics Academy
Spectrum Gymnastics Academy (SGA), established in 1984, is locally owned and operated. We are located in Londonderry, NH. Our state of the art facility is equipped with all of the best and safest gymnastics equipment available. Our Mission: Our gym exists to further the happiness and health of our customers and to become mentors for the students who come through our doors. However, we do not just teach "gymnastics". We are teaching lessons in life. We believe that each child is an incredible person who has the potential to do what ever he or she chooses. Some would say that gymnastics is just a sport, but we say that gymnastics is the foundation for a healthier, happier, more successful life. If children can learn Self-respect, Discipline, Sportsmanship, Goal Setting, Teamwork, Gratitude, the ability to accept defeat and try even harder, they can take these lessons outside the gym and apply them to their goals and dreams. When a child enrolls at Spectrum Gymnastics Academy they are enrolling for more than gymnastics lessons, they are enrolling in life lessons that will build the foundations of success.

Turn-teach Gymnastics Lecture Notes
During the EY turn-teach gymnastics lecture a number of issues raised in the turn-teach games lecture arose, the following additional observations were made:
  • When you ask the children to demonstrate their work make sure the demonstration serves a purpose - try to avoid having demonstrations simply for the sake of filling time! Make sure if you give a demonstration it is the best you can do - sloppy demonstrations often lead to sloppy work from the children eg. don't allow running with arms folded, hands in pockets etc... Pinpoint what it is you want the children to observe during the demonstration and ask questions to check that they have observed it eg. before demo ......... "I want you to watch my legs carefully as I jump and land" after demo............ "who can tell me what happened to my legs as I landed?" etc..... If a demonstration is performed well by the child(ren) - tell the class why you liked it ie. reinforce the quality of work you desire through demonstration. If you are making specific reference to safety aspects on the apparatus, then these instructions should be given immediately prior to when the children are about to start their work. Thus, safety instructions are 'fresh in their minds' at the time of performance.

Most experts agree that motor skills, listening, following directions and increased attention span are important faculties your child should develop in order to be successful in kindergarten. If you want your child to develop a variety of physical and social skills without having to enroll him or her in several activities, gymnastics is an excellent choice. Many sports teach commitment, dedication and time management. However, gymnastics, because of the complex skill progression and vast number of physical techniques required to master elements on different events, teaches more perseverance, patience and discipline than most other physical activities. When a child participates in a gymnastics class, he or she develops a variety of motor skills (e.g., speed, strength and agility) while learning balance and grace. A student must also develop acute listening skills in order to transform verbal instructions into complex, physical movements. The balance beam event, in particular, teaches students to focus and concentrate for extended periods of time. Gymnasts tend to do well in school because they utilize this ability while studying.
