Sports court rules American gymnast Paul Hamm can keep his disputed Olympic gold
By Nancy Armour
ASSOCIATED PRESS 8:09 a.m. October 21, 2004
Associated Press Gymnast Paul Hamm holds his 2004 Olympic gold medal during a news conference in New York.
Paul Hamm can keep his Olympic gold medal. Sports' highest court rejected a South Korean appeal Thursday, ruling that Hamm is the rightful champion in the men's all-around gymnastics competition at the Athens Games. "The decision from CAS confirms what I've always felt in my heart, which is that I was champion that night and Olympic gold medalist," Hamm said. "I was just pleased it's all over with." The decision by a three-judge panel from the Court of Arbitration for Sport ends a saga that began more than two months ago, when South Korea's Yang Tae-young claimed a scoring error cost him the title. Yang finished with the bronze medal. Yang asked the court to order international gymnastics officials to change the results, and adjust the medal rankings so he would get the gold and Hamm the silver. But the judges dismissed the appeal, leaving Hamm with the gold and Yang with his bronze. Kim Dae-eun of South Korea was the silver medalist.

Gymnastics judges suspended but results stand ATHENS, AUG. 21. The International Gymnastics Federation suspended three judges on Saturday for a mistake they made in scoring the men's all-around final, but said results would not be changed and Paul Hamm of the United States would keep his gold medal. The error in Wednesday's all-around cost bronze medallist Yang Tae-young of South Korea a tenth of a point that would have given him the gold. Yang received a start value of 9.9 on his parallel bars routine, a tenth lower than he received for the same set in team qualifying and finals. After reviewing a tape of the all-around, FIG officials determined he should have been awarded a start value of 10. He scored a 9.712 on the event. With the extra .1, he would have finished with 57.874 points and defeated Hamm by .051

LONDON The IOC released a hefty report Monday assessing the 28 sports hoping to stay in the Olympics and the five trying to get in, though the organization made no recommendations for adding or dropping any sport. The 265-page review by the International Olympic Committee's program commission lists facts and figures across a range of 33 criteria. The report is designed to serve as a guide for IOC members when they vote on the sports program in Singapore next month. Each of the 28 sports contested in Athens last summer will be put to a vote; any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics.

Russia's Alexei Nemov asks the crowd to settle down as boos reign loud and long following low scores from judges for Nemov's routine on the horizontal bar in the men's competition on Monday in Athens.
COMMENTARY By By Josh Belzman Special to MSNBC.com Carly Patterson pranced. Paul Hamm soared. And then these two stars of the gymnastics world left the Olympic stage. By design, Tuesday's Olympic gymnastics gala offered us a night of enjoyment, free from judges, contested marks and controversy. It was gymnastics at its best. This celebration contrasted starkly with a week's worth of high drama and scandal on the mat. This was simply a chance to admire skilled athletes who live to dazzle us once every four years, only to slip back into the shadows of their obscure sport. Slide show Visions of gold: Aug. 29
