The pommel horse is one of six apparatus in artistic gymnastics Gymnastics is among the oldest Olympic sports, dating back to ancient times as well as the first modern Games in 1896.
The term "gymnastics" derives from the Greek word "gymnos", meaning naked, and the sport in its modern form evolved during the 19th century. Two styles of gymnastics were in conflict - the Swedish and German systems - with German Frederick-Ludwig Khan introducing parallel bars and the horizontal bar to what had been a floor-based event. Academy: Beth Tweddle's guides to all the apparatus These days, gymnastics as an Olympic sport is split into three disciplines; artistic, rhythmic and trampoline. The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (Fig) was founded in 1881, and men's artistic gymnastics was included for the first time in the 1896 Olympic Games, with women joining in 1928.

Romanian gymnast is the victim in a half-hearted war
Click here for more on this story Latest: Tuesday September 26, 2000 07:00 PM SYDNEY, Australia This story saddens me. I am haunted by the face of Andreea Raducan, a 16-year-old, dark-eyed Romanian gymnast, as she sat at her press conference after winning the women's all-around competition. Her coach, Octavian Belu, was singing her praises, and she was listening in childlike rapture, still aglow. During a week in which she would turn 17, and this was her birthday present to herself. It saddens me because it is a story about drugs, not competition; about a doctor's error, not an athlete's accomplishment. Most of all, it saddens me because I have a 16-year-old at home. It is an age when dreams should be brought to flower rather than crushed. "She's devastated, of course,"

Gymnastics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of sequences of movements requiring physical strength, flexibility, and kinesthetic awareness, such as handsprings and handstands . It developed from fitness exercises used by ancient Greek soldiers, including skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and circus performance skills. It is often considered a dangerous sport, as the difficult acrobatic maneuvers often performed on equipment high above the ground puts the athlete at risk of serious injury. Modern gymnastics, as regulated by the F©d©ration Internationale de Gymnastique incorporates six distinct disciplines: Of these disciplines, the two sub-disciplines of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics are the best known, having been part of Summer Olympic Games competitions. Trampoline was also recently included in the Summer Olympics. The discipline of rhythmic gymnastics is competed only by women (although there is a new version of this discipline for men being pioneered in Japan , see Men's rhythmic gymnastics ), and involves the performance of five separate routines with the use of five apparatus - ball, ribbon, hoop, clubs, rope - on a floor area, with a much greater emphasis on the aesthetic rather than the acrobatic. Rhythmic routines are scored out of a possible 20 points.

Olympic Sports,
Table of Contents
The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.
