Gymnastics Artistic Gymnastics Rhythmic Gymnastics Trampoline Glossary ... Greek Olympic Team
Gymnastics is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It has always been a part of the ancient, as well as the modern Olympic Games. The term “gymnastics” derives from the Greek word “gymnos”, meaning naked. This is also the root of the word “gymnasium”, which was a training area where athletes gathered to exercise, compete in sports and receive training in philosophy, music and literature. Description Grace, rhythm, skill and dynamic movement are only some of the characteristics of Gymnastics, one of the most popular sports of the Olympic Games. Athletes, with or without the accompaniment of music and only with their body or with the use of apparatus, perform a series of exercises where art and sport coexist, thereby attracting millions of fans. Gymnastics disciplines that have developed internationally are: Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline, Sports Acrobatics, Sports Aerobics and General Gymnastics.

Gymnastics - History
Gymnastics is one of the world's oldest sports and can be traced back thousands of years. In 2000 BC, the men and women of Ancient Greece developed the sport of bull jumping, which is similar to the vaulting exercises you see today in modern gymnastics. In bull jumping, the athlete would run towards a charging bull , grab its horns and either vault onto the bull's back or vault over the bull in a somersault and land on his or her feet on the other side of the bull! This early event required both courage and strength , as well as grace and style. The Ancient Romans used gymnastics as part of their military training to improve the strength, balance and flexibility of soldiers. In the 1800s, gymnastics exercises using rings, bars, balls and mats were developed by gymnasts in Germany and Sweden. Gymnastics have been a part of the modern Olympic Games , since they were first held in 1896. Rhythmic gymnastics, which combines gymnastics and dance, and makes use of

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is made up of three disciplines, artistic, rhythmic and trampolining. Artistic is the more well known of the three, while rhythmic sees gymnasts throwing things like balls and ribbons around to music. Fact File Artistic gymnastic events Men - Floor exercises, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar Women - Floor exercises, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar The most important event in artistic is the all-round, where the scores of all the apparatus are added to each other to find the complete gymnast. Only women compete in the rhythmic events. Trampolining is what it sounds like, with gymnasts jumping up and down performing tumbles and spins. Medals in the gymnastic events are decided by judges, who mark the gymnasts out of 10. One of the most popular events of the Games is the gymnastics gala, where all the Olympic champions and world champions perform routines for fun. They are often much more modern and unusual than the serious stuff. Who are the British hopes for Athens?
