The Ancient Olympic Games
The Olympic Games were celebrated 320 times every four years in the sacred stadium at Olympia, Greece, beginning in 776 B.C. Though boxing and wrestling were added later, the first Olympic event was a sprint. The prize was an olive leaf and deification by poets, as well as recognition as a hero forever.
The Modern Olympic Games

In 1896, his dream is realized as England, Greece, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the United States open Games. James B. Connolly wins triple jump (the first medal in modern Olympic history); American flag is raised and Star Spangled Banner played, beginning tradition of honoring victor and his/her country.

16-Year-Old Wins Gold in Women's All-Around Event
By Liz Clarke Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, August 20, 2004; Page A01 ATHENS, Aug. 19 In the biggest competition of her young life, Carly Patterson made a four-inch balance beam look as wide as a sidewalk. And she danced, leapt and tumbled her way across it Thursday to become only the second American to win the women's all-around Olympic gymnastics title, 20 years after Mary Lou Retton did so at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Patterson's gold medal completed a U.S. sweep of the highest individual honor for a gymnast at the Athens Games, coming one night after Paul Hamm's stunning comeback to win the men's all-around by 0.012 of a point over South Korea's Kim Dae Eun.
Carly Patterson clinches an upset of Svetlana Khorkina of Russia, and the gold medal, in the floor exercise.

By DAVE ANDERSON
August 3, 1984 LOS ANGELES [Friday]-Behind the lavender fence, Mary Lou Retton's coach, Bela Karolyi, was waiting to encourage her. But even before he could give her any advice about the vault on which she needed a perfect 10 to win the Olympic gold medal, Mary Lou Retton looked up at him with those big cocker-spaniel eyes. She wasn't waiting for her coach to say something. Instead, she had something to tell him.
"I'm going to stick it," she said.
Name a candy bar after her. Or at least a stick-pin. Mention to Michael Jackson that he should rewrite the lyrics to one of his hits and title it "Stick It" in her honor. Mary Lou Retton is not merely the Olympic gold medalist in all-around gymnastics. Mary Lou Retton is an American folk heroine now, an Olympian for the ages. With what Don Peters, the United States gymnastics coach, described as a "backward somersault in a laid-out position with a full twist, 360 degrees, a Tshukahaka," she stuck herself into Olympic history Tonight as the first American gymnast, man or woman, to win a gold medal.
Mary Lou Retton might stick herself into history again Monday night with two more gold medals in the vault and the floor exercises in the women's individual events. And she's doing all this on a right knee that jeopardized her appearance here before arthroscopic surgery removed torn cartilage two months ago. "She was declared out of the Olympics," says Bela Karolyi, "declared out of any hard landing." But on her hard landings here at Pauley Pavilion all week, Mary Lou Retton has had no pain. Only glory.

A brief look at the history of the Czech Olympic movement
[19-01-2005] By Jan Velinger Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s All of us are familiar with the Olympic Games and its many moments of sweet victory, captured in time, that slowly form part of the patchwork of nations' collective identities. There are Czechs who will never forget the feats of runners like Emil Zatopek and his triple triumph in Helsinki. "Less than 200 metres to go it's Zatopek in front! Zatopek wins...what a beautiful race!"

Hamm, the champion in the all-around at 2003 Anaheim worlds and the top finisher in the qualification round of the Athens Olympics, is technically, physically and psychologically ready to clinch his first Olympic gold. In the Olympic history, only Anton Heida won the men's individual all-around title for the United States in 1904, a hundred years ago. Boasting several intricate routines on men's six apparatus, such as three consecutive releases on high bar, Hamm, whose form was going upward from the qualification on Saturday to the team final on Monday, vowed to do his best in Wednesday night's all-around duel. "I commited an error on high bar, which prevented me from doing the third release. And I got only 9.462 points." Hamm said after

Classifieds Politics and the Olympic Dream: Reflections Of A Sports And Political Junkie By MICHAEL SCHENKLER 1960 Rome I remember that I first watched the Olympics with my dad when I was a kid in 1960. I grew up across the street from Queens College and my fourth floor bedroom window overlooked the track which disappeared long ago. Back then, dad and I would watch the QC track meets and track and field became one of my favorites. We watched the 1960 Rome games and I remember little about it but marvelous athletic competition and some national pride. I was introduced to the decathlon by a wonder named Rafer Johnson. I marveled at the fastest woman in the world, Wilma Rudolph. And had my first encounter with amateur boxing when a young American named Cassius Clay captured my imagination. No politics; no incidents; just sport.
